Oh, nice job Kenya.

That should make my flight into Nairobi this weekend all kinds of fun.

I've noticed several variations of that video on different flights. There are two versions with the asian girl, and a third with the african american woman.

I can't seem to find it online, but the version I come across most has a lady loading several books into a 767 storage bin, and then a creepy girl that teleports from one-seat to another.

Sweet...both legs tomorrow upgraded to First Class. OAK > LAX then LAX > Minneapolis.

Most of my flights are 2 legs and rarely do I get both upgraded. Gotta love it! On top of that I'm meeting a co-worker who is going to do the driving to the client so nothing to stop me from having as many beers as I want, woo hoo!

One crappy part though...3 hour layover @ LAX. I could have had a much shorter one if I flew out of SFO but OAK is so close to my place and a much more basic airport to deal with.

Semi-related novella bump...

We went to HI a few weeks ago on vacation. My wife, being awesome, booked the trip months in advance including 2 round-trip tickets on United Airlines.

It's a long flight and all of the "pairs" of seats are "upgrade" class, meaning, along the windows on either side there is a row of two seats, and then an aisle, and then a center section 5 seats wide. We didn't want to sit in the center section so we paid for the "upgrade" seats, like $250. There are also "upgrade" seats in the center section which were cheaper (for obvious reasons) but we mainly just wanted to sit by the window/aisle and not have to fight with some ******* for an armrest so we went for the more expensive option.

Everything went great on the way there but on the way back we're getting on the plane and notice we have "E and F" which I thought was supposed to be A and B so I figure we misunderstood which side we were on but no... They put us in the middle.

There's some dumb bitch in our seats who is bitching to the flight attendant about how her back gets sore and the other seat is empty. We're pissed. Then they give the 2nd seat to some standby passenger.

There is this bitchy old lady next to my wife who hogs the armrest the whole time and is visibly annoyed that she's asked to move her arm so my wife can unfold the tray table for her seat.

Next we have the old couple next to us where the man keeps going to the bathroom every half an hour and the woman looks like you couldn't drive a pin up her ass with a jackhammer. I mean, she actually recoiled in terror when I started reaching for my seat belt 3" from her leg. Really lady? No one's wanted any of that in years, I'm sure.

When we land my wife calls United to complain. We got bumped to cheaper, ****tier seats. They give her a bunch of **** like "Well did you say anything when you printed your boarding pass? Why not? Did you complain to the stewardess? Are you sure you picked those seats" - basically trying to blame us for the whole thing. She said that she had to fill out a form online. So she sent my wife to the Customer Service site where you could basically tell them what a great experience you had (there was no category for complaint, or refund, or **** you people and die in a fire or anything.)

She calls back and gets another rep who gives her a different web site to go to for a refund request. Being tenacious and really pissed off, my wife fills out both of them.

Last week she gets notified by the "refund request" people that her refund request has been granted and her credit card should be credited the full $250. We're like "Wow great."

Today she gets an email from the OTHER people, the Customer Service department the first CSR sent her to, explaining how seats aren't guaranteed and explaining what an "upgrade" seat is, in a patronizing tone between some boiler plate explaining how much they value our business etc.

Clearly we are aware of what an "upgrade" seat entails, however not all of the UPGRADE seats were the same price when we purchased our seats (the middle ones were significantly cheaper) and were only jacked up to the same price as the window seats WHEN THE PLANE WAS FULL 6 months after we bought our seats. We would not have paid $250 to sit in the middle aisle with nothing but 5" of extra leg room - my wife is barely 5' tall for ****'s sake.

So here's the point... They denied her request for a refund because the seats weren't guaranteed and those seats were "equivalent value" because they were "'upgrade" seats EXCEPT THEY ALREADY REFUNDED THE MONEY HA HA HA HA HA.

**** you, United Airlines.

The End

The End
I went to Hawaii about 6 years ago, direct from Chicago. The flight there was great, the crew, the passengers were all in a great mood - first time I was drunk on a flight. On the way home, it was depressing. The crew was defeated, nobody was in a good mood, it was depressing.

I've been a 1K flyer on United for the past 7 years and United doesn't give a **** about any flyer other than a Global Service flyer...and even that can be spotty.

However, I've had bad experiences on most US domestic carriers...they all SUCK! Blame the unions

So did you actually select seats E and F or did United change your reservation?

United is correct. They don't guarantee seats. However if you had selected window seats and they switched you, they should refund you the difference. The "upgrade seats" or econ plus is a scam anyway. They assign those seats for free to the people who don't have seating assignments after all other seats have been taken.

This is also why I prefer AA, you bitch, they throw you some free miles right off the bat.

They changed our reservation.

When we purchased our seats, E and F would have been like $50 each. A and B were like $125 each.

We discussed it and as I said, my wife is barely 5' so it was "sit in the middle for the regular price or get extra legroom she doesn't need for $100, **** it. But hey, for another $150, our own window and aisle seat? Nice. Let's do it."

When the flight is full, there is no difference in price. ANY upgrade seat was more than we paid for the window seats. They used this technicality, plus the fact that "an upgrade seat has 5" of extra leg room!" to try to bull**** us into believing that we were switched to an "equivalent" seat. Those seats were not equivalent by any stretch of the imagination to anyone who doesn't have severe brain damage.

In other words, when selecting seats originally, if we were offered those seats for $250 over the standard price, we would have told them to suck rocks.

It was the only way we could get a window/aisle combination, and we bought it for that reason. Changing our reservation removed the entire reason for us upgrading in the first place.

Glad you don't work for United in the refund department.

I am a frequent flyer with Delta. Primarily because they are really big and have good schedules for flights to Hawaii (where I'm from).

Never really have had a bad experience with them. Pretty much by the book experiences in terms of getting what I paid for. I wish I flew enough to break into one of the clubs they have for the free upgrades to First Class.

I gotcha, I'm just pointing out that United doesn't guarantee seat assignments and usually won't compensate you if you're moved either. That doesn't make what they did any less ****ty, especially in light of you paying for that upgrade for those specific seats, but according to their Contract of Carriage, they would have been in their right to tell you to go eff off.

You're lucky you caught someone at the refund dept that was having a good day.

Delta gets a solid meh from me. I've flown them a lot lately now that I moved and they're solidly average. Not great, not bad, just average. Skypesos, their reward program, is worthless and I detest flying through SLC and ATL. I usually get stuck on their Airbus narrowbodies that for some reason have short seat backs. I'm not very tall at 5'11 with a short torso, but the tops of the seats only seem to come up to the bottom of my head.

Exactly!

I was just really happy that they refunded the money (so my wife would stop being mad about it for the next 5 years... ) and also amused that we got a bitchy, dismissive and patronizing denial a week later because the company is retarded.

Hawaiian Air and Alaska Air serve free Mai Tais on planes headed to Hawaii. Just pre-mixed stuff but still kind of cool.

We used Hawaiian Air to go between islands several times and they were friendly/professional and on time - and most importantly, they had cute stewardesses.

4 open first class seats on this flight. Boarding starts in 15ish minutes and I'm number 4 on the upgrade list.

C'mon luck...hook me up.

Woot! Got it.

I watched the list slowly decrease as they assigned other people. The monitor was still displaying 1 remaining as I boarded...and when they scanned my boarding pass I got the magic receipt.

Glad I didn't waste (company) money for breakfast at the terminal.

I always check bags too.

In January for the first time in nearly 25 years of work travel my bag did not get to where it needed to be by the time I needed it. It took Southwest a week, but I finally got it. They reimbursed me for all my out of pocket costs, gave me some travel vouchers, and some points too.

2 lessons learned; it pays to not be an ******* in that sort of situation, and always check your claim check before they toss your bag on the belt.

I'm flying to Frankfurt, Germany for the second time this year for a week. My first time was in the middle of January. It was a work trip to visit different machine tool manufacturers in Germany and Spain. It was my first time in Europe. The travel group was 4 guys from a sister company and me. They flew business class per their company policy and I flew coach. It actually wasn't that bad except for the constantly screaming baby 2 rows ahead for the entire 8hr flight. I'll be flying coach again, but I am pretty happy I get to go again for a week in one location. If the trip proves beneficial, I'll be making several more trips over the rest of the year.

I don't plan on checking a bag. I've got a carry on and a beat up old backpack. The backpack usually is close to empty and just has my laptop, notebooks, and tablet in it for the flight over. Before I left to return home, I chucked a few pairs of socks and underwear that had holes in them to make room for souvenirs. This time, I'll probably check a bag on the way back with some beer and wine(German wine in the south west is surprisingly good). So I'll probably be packing a second empty backpack for the return trip to put my clothes in instead.

In the Frankfurt airport on the way back, I got pulled aside for a special check/pat down. It was intense. They went through my bags and I had to lift my shirt and roll up my pant legs. Then the security agent put his hands in the top of my waist band (he did not fondle my penis), but I guess the euro pat downs are a bit more thorough. Or I just ended up with a perverted dude.

One more thing, we flew from Philly to Frankfurt on US Airways and from Frankfurt to Bilbao, Spain on Lufthansa. Lufthansa is so ****ing awesome.

Meh, have you flown them longhaul? I flew them ORD-FRA a couple years ago on an ancient 747 without AVOD(inseat idiot boxes) and it was the longest flight of my life. The seats were narrow and since the Europeans have a different concept of personal space, the kindly German guy sitting next to me had no problems jabbing his elbows into my ribs every opportunity he got.

I had a much better flight on the United 777 on the way home.

I'm flying with my parents to Singapore in a couple months on Delta. I didn't have the miles to bump us all to First but did get us into Economy Comfort.

That is a long ass flight...ugh.

Domestic flyer here, but I fly a lot. 80% of my domestic travel is on Southwest. Why?

A) the flights mostly leave and arrive on time.
B) southwest lets me make changes easily and doesn't charge stupid change fees.
c) my interactions with the Southwest staffers have been far superior to those with, say, United or Delta.

So, I have a Southwest companion pass, mrs. Jds flies for free with me, and 200k plus points banked. We vacation for free this year.

I used to fly United almost exclusively, but they screwed 1k'ers over when they merged with Continental, so I took the $25,000 I spend a year on plane tickets to Southwest, who takes nice care of me.
