Had some time tonight, I power-brushed the surface crud off the outward facing side of the hub and coated it.

Another thing I did as part of this phase was I might as well do a nice little upgrade to the rear brakes. Ordered some rotors intended for a 3rd gen Legacy. They're an inch larger and the parts are priced no different then RS ones.

The caliper on this corner was also starting to seize. Instead of getting another RS caliper and mix-n-match the right bracket for it, I order a whole 3rd gen Legacy caliper as well.

This was the reason for removing the rear dust shields earlier. The rotor slid right on over the handbrake shoes perfectly, and the caliper lined up and bolted directly to the hub. The rear brakes are big enough now that I can't pear over the top to line up the caliper bolts anymore Had to mount the caliper with me under the car from behind.

Subtle, but fills up a bit more space now.

Passenger-side trailing arm is in.

The front end bolt in the frame didn't make as much noise breaking free as the driver's side. But this side was trickier to break free.
On the driver's side I was able to push a breaker bar or ratchet down and toward the car. The passenger side's the opposite, and one would be pulling up and away from the car. Rather then try and lift the car up I managed to put extend a wrench with interlocking another wrench and stepping down on everything from within the wheel well, just barely.

The rear hub bolt broke free as expected for this bolt. Both bolts were in mint shape as well so re-used them with some anti-seize.

Both passenger side rear control arms are in.

There were 2 surprises with these on this side. The 1st was that king-pin bolt at the hub, it was nearly seized in there. Its nut came off just fine, it was eventually breaking it free by slowly applying more and more pressure til it started spinning freely in the hub.

The 2nd was a pre-stripped nut. This one was the inner nut on the front of the 2 arms.

Had to put some vice grips on it and slowly break its bolt free.

This side had me a bit concerned cause this was the corner that was hit before I bought the car... and wasn't told about. I imagine the suspension had to be removed to get in there and do the body work. I suspect this wasn't put back together completely properly either. I also wonder if anything mechanical was replaced cause of the accident - so hard to tell. What I can tell is the previous owner was a lying sack.

But, I am thankful that that everything still lined up straight when I put the new arms in. I had to turn the driver's side arms to expand them to line up with the bolt holes and had to do the same for this side. Each arm on each side has the same about of threads exposed now as the other. So I'm grateful things are straight and symmetrical.

Power-brushed and coated the outside of the driver's rear hub.

In this corner the caliper is essentially new from last time, so this one is a hybrid of an RS piston body and 3rd gen Legacy bracket. I never swapped over just the bracket before, it was easier then I thought.

Passenger-rear is all put back together.

Next is some cleaning and coating of a few surfaces while the ass end is up, but it's too damn cold right now...

Got my rear swaybar back from coating.

Went with light grey cause it sorta matches my front sway bar now and was a colour that didn't cost any extra. I'm adding this to the pile that I'll have my shop do cause of the broken bolt and knackered threads in the frame.

Well, that was tedious. But the inside of one rear hub is coated.

One more to go...

Other side's done too. For the 1st time in... 6 months? All 4 of Vicky's tires are back down on the ground.

All that's left for this phase is a handful of bushings that I'll get my shop to help with. In the meantime I have some odds and ends kicking around that I'll take care of too.

I finally got around to installing my Hella horns.

I ordered these, over a year ago, and painted the cage to match about a year ago. Just never got around to it, but on the last few test drives I noticed the previous horns I had behind the grill were starting to sound like an animal sending its mating call to my sister-in-law.

I don't think I showed this last time, but got the previous horns to fit by zig-zagging their mounting brakets. The Hella's are even thinner, so I just re-used these.

They landed where I wanted them.

And they're actually not touching the grill this time like the last ones.

Been working on some lighting yesterday was my new "braker" LED brake lights seem to be working fine. No afterglow in the parking lights (yet) but I'm hanging onto the load balancers for that just in case.

The weirdness I'm encountering is the turn signals: I can't seem to run LED's in them. Doesn't matter which corner, doesn't matter if there's a load balancer on it or not, doesn't matter if I'm using an LED or regular flasher. They're just not lighting up? I touched the LED bulbs to the battery and they do light up.

I'm thinking there's something else in the system. Before my ownership the car came with a... Clifford? alarm with built-in turbo timer. The fender signals were converted to be on while the turbo timer was running after shutoff (I guess to visually tell if the car was still running?). I didn't care much for this feature and I believe I'm recalling quite of a bit of difficulty getting the side markers to work as turn signals again. The wiring done for that looked hokey and I never actually dug into it deep enough at the time; I just got them working and chalked it up to 'resolved'.

Oh well, those will remain filament bulbs I guess, so I ordered some "chrome dome" bulbs where the colour remains invisible in the clear lens until they turn on.

Slight throw-back to Phase 1, made the detailing more pronounced on the rear seats - blend things in with the new front seats more.

And something else I also always wanted to do for the interior, but skipped my mind lately. Now with Holy **** handles in the roof all the way around (back pictured)

Found a full set from an 06 Impreza. The endcaps are slightly larger, otherwise direct bolt-in.

I dropped her at the shop yesterday to have the last of the bushings pressed in, the rear sway bar bolt extracted & have it installed, and hand brake cables & shoes - so probably won't have any pics of any of it.

...and now that I see it, doesn't sound like very exciting pictures anyway :P

Shop called me yesterday, they noticed that the bushings between the rear crossmember and body were gone! I didn't even know there were bushings there! haha Might explain the suspected extra driveline noise I heard, though I had no previous frame of reference.

Managed to find some poly ones by SuperPro. Ordered them yesterday and having them shipped straight to the shop.

The bushings showed up at the shop Thursday. I asked them if it were the right ones. They said they haven't even had the chance to open the box :P But they'd said they'd call me if there was, or looked like there would be, an issue with them. So far I'll take the no news as good news.

Bit of a delay, but had the car back from the shop for almost a week now!

It was at the shop for a month and a half, but there was a 3 week delay in there. The SuperPro crossmember-to-body bushings that I had shipped to the shop were incorrect. They were twice the size of what was needed. Took about a week to get the right ones in their hands. Then, we had a heat wave for about a week that was so bad the gov't told people literally not work unless they had A/C. Then when that calmed down, it was still bloody hot, and people were flocking to the shop to get their A/C's fixed, so there was a 3rd week.

It was OK, I wasn't in a rush and for all the time she spent there and the work that was done, they only charged me 10 hours of labour! Apparently my rear sway bar frame bolts were a pain, the front control arm forward bushings were a pain, as were the diff-to-crossmember bushings. But otherwise no surprises. Turns out I didn't need new handbrake cables. My idiot brother either didn't adjust them properly or didn't lock in his adjustment last time. Oh well, saved some money and have new cables on hand.

Vicky's is a different car again! Not in a bad way, and not completely different. Get to learn her finer points again! She no longer slightly wanders on the highway. I used to get a second or so back-n-forth wiggle in the body when I came to a complete stop. I asked what shape those last bushings were in, and they said some were cracking but others they couldn't tell cause they had to pretty much destroy the old ones to get them out (faster and cheaper then to press out for inspection). She even shifts better between gears, no more shaking and lurching. There had to have been something wrong with one of those bushings for sure. I believe I had gotten use to the gradual wear that I didn't notice what shape the bushings were in nor how shaky she had become.

I'd take pictures but things really don't look like anything :P Next time I have the back end up and take some pics of the sway bar setup.

So that's it! Phase 2 is complete. Every arm and/or bushing that could be replaced was, and upgraded.

Doing some cleanup, I found I still had about half a can left of supposed-to-match paint from way back. I noticed that my back bumper has been a bit beat up for quite some time now. With a few months insurance on it, and Phase 4 still being a few years away, I decided to sand down the damage as best I can and try and freshen it up a bit.

Not perfect, but better then before. Ironically I hate sanding and bodywork but actually enjoy painting. I classify it as: tolerable.

Phase 3: "Engine" has begun.

The first part I ordered came in. The whole point of the build is to safely add this spring into my wastegate. It'll be one of the last parts that get installed, so it will serve as motivation in the meantime.

At the end of last summer my amp died. Of all the stereo shops in town, they all use the one repairman in town for this stuff. I guess there's not as much of a demand for aftermarket stereo as there used to.

Had it repaired over this past winter and worked fine til a few months ago when it died again. Brought it back to the same guy for a 2nd repair. That lasted maybe a month til it died again.

Brought it back for a 3rd repair and it only lasted a week :/ I said forget it, I've already invested in repairs about half what a new one would be. So, that's what I did!

Stayed with JBL, got another 5-channel - the Club-4505. It's about 3/4 the size of my old one, half the weight, 1/3 of the price of my old one (when it retailed as new) and nearly twice the power! This thing is loud!

Bit of a throw back to Phase 1: I added some stick-on Rockville sound deadening to the inside of the trunk.

I didn't want to seal this up with coating cause I had a feeling it'd end up being a sloppy mess. Bought a kit for 2 doors and a trunk bu didn't use as much as I thought here. I quite a bit leftover for the doors. Probably do that over the winter...

Another slight throwback to Phase 1: My g/f's been in marketing for over 20 years and has a hookup with a print shop. I designed, and they made for me, a little number plate on aluminum :P

Is it accurate? Sorta? lol I've been advised that Subaru's numbering in their VIN's was in randomized chunks/blocks of numbers - no real rhyme or reason to it. The 6120 is how many RS's were made that year. The last 4 of my VIN happens to be less then this :P

I would say "Phase 3: Engine" has begun!
I wanted an Aeromotive fuel pump again, and decided to install it now while everything else was still running, so if there's troubleshooting needed on the new engine, I know it wouldn't be this.

This is actually Vicky's 5th fuel pump :S The previous owner swapped out the original for the bolt-on turbo with one from a turbo Supra. He nearly mangled the sending unit to where it was unusable and had exposed wires in the gas tank. I'm surprised he didn't kill himself. I replaced it with an Aeromotive that was either defective or a knock-off back in the day. Left me stranded as she was my daily at the time and ran out and found an STI fuel pump on the shelf at a local parts store. This time I ordered it directly off of Aeromotive's site! lol

The instructions were very adamant that this lower vent be unobstructed. So I put a notch in the lower bump stop.

Didn't smell as bad as I remember :P I think it looks pretty good for something I won't see again...

After some priming she fired up and ran! Fuel pump works.

The bulk of the smaller odds-n-ends are starting to arrive, that I can think of off the top of my head.

There's already 2 more that I've been made aware of, and there'll definitely be more I'm sure...
