Default AC Cobra 4-electric lineup expanded

Quote:
Quote:
Fearsome' would probably have sold the reputation of early AC Cobras short, and none have been for the faint-hearted. Even though the new 4-electric promises a very different Cobra experience, with more than 600hp it's still going to demand a level of respect.

Now AC has expanded its Cobra EV range, with a less powerful 4-electric. Where the first 460kW (617hp) model used the larger body like a Superblower, this latest model has half the power (230kW, or 308hp) and employs the smaller Cobra body as used the 289-engined cars.

With less car comes less weight, the 230kW taking 50kg off the 460kW car for a 1,190kg total. AC says that's enough for 0-62mph in 4.9 seconds and 190 miles of range, against 3.8 seconds and 160 miles for the more powerful car. AC "guarantees an exceptional on-the-road performance and a memorable driving experience for the Series 4-electric."

Unfortunately, half the power doesn't mean half the cost for the new electric Cobra. With the 460kW kicking off at £168,000, the 230kW has a starting price of £148,000; a useful saving, but still £10k more than the conventional Superblower - now updated with another 70hp from its V8. And it isn't hard to see where the more traditional Cobra appeal lies.

That said, we're all aware that traditional appeal is probably going to have to change somewhat in the near future. "The march of the outstandingly efficient electric AC Cobras is gathering pace now," said Alan Lubinsky, adding, "Lower overall weight reduces energy consumption, allowing the batteries to deliver a longer range and the ability to drive the car to AC's traditional high standards for speed and acceleration which the marque has achieved over many years". Reservations for both the 4-electric models are being taken now, with deliveries expected by the end of the year.
AC Cobra trades V8 for pure-electric powertrain that offers up to 460kW and 306km range

Niche British car-maker AC Cars has announced it is expanding its reborn AC Cobra range to include a battery-powered AC Cobra Series 4-electric – a wild pure-electric take on the iconic 1960s roadster.

But with prices starting from around £148,000 ($A272,500), it isn’t cheap.
Based on the wide-body AC Cobra 378 Superblower that was re-introduced in 2018, the new 2021 AC Cobra Series 4-electric was co-developed by fellow Brit-based EV experts Falcon Electric.

Two versions of the battery-powered roadster will be offered, one with a single 230kW motor that can sprint from 0-100km/h in 4.9 seconds and cover up to 306km, and another dual-motor version that produces a mightier 460kW.

The fastest Cobra Series 4-electric costs £168,000 ($A310,000) but sees the plug-in AC complete the 0-62mph dash in just 3.8sec.

It does, however, only offer a driving range of up to 260km between recharges.
Despite using heavy batteries, engineers have managed to keep weight down to 1240kg to preserve the Cobra’s agile handling.

Engineers say the clever use of lightweight materials has ensured the lithium-ion battery, motors, inverters and control units weigh no more than the Superblower with the conventional V8 engine and transmission in place.

Unusually, the new battery (thought to have a 54kWh capacity) is mounted under the bonnet behind the front axle.

Maintaining the same weight distribution as its petrol-powered sibling, the single or dual motors (that are sandwiched together) are located where the transmission once lived.

Power and torque is sent to the rear axle that then distributes all that might via a mechanical Quaife-sourced differential for optimum traction.
Available to order now in the UK, the AC Cobra Series 4-electric is available in an exclusive palette of

First deliveries are scheduled to start late this year.

Commenting on its lightweight construction, AC Cars owner Alan Lubinsky said: “Eliminating excess weight brings with it positive benefits for the car’s owner. Lower overall weight reduces energy consumption, allowing the batteries to deliver a longer range and the ability to drive the car to AC’s traditional high standards for speed and acceleration which the marque has achieved over many years.”

If introducing the Cobra Series 4-electric wasn’t enough, AC Cars has also announced that it has upgraded the current AC Cobra Superblower with a more powerful supercharged 6.2-litre V8 that produces 485kW and 880Nm – a significant upgrade on the 410kW and 550Nm of the previous engine.
No performance claims have been revealed, but pricing remains unchanged, with the Cobra Superblower offered from £139,000 ($A256,000).

SMH...

this is wrong on so many levels. If you have ever heard a Cobra with a 427, this is just an abomination.

Agreed; at least they are still making the V8 cars - evolving market, do what you can I suppose.

They still make the V8 version... that is good, as that is their real money maker and who they are... but I guess I cannot blame them for being forward looking, even if this is an unnatural pairing like pineapple on pizza.

Cool. I'm sure it's a hoot to drive.

Not for me, but cool nonetheless.

I'm not here how to tell people what they can and can't enjoy in life.

How many Cobras are driven anyway? Why not make an art piece electric?

If I was building a kit car, of course it will have a 2 mpg 49 litre V of indeterminate but definitely an odd number of cylinders engine because dammit!

Buying one? **** all that.

I guess it depends on if the buyer wants the spirit of the car, or the spirit of Shelby.

If it’s a homage to the Cobra, it needs the fire snorting v8. If Shelby was doing it today, he would probably be looking for a way to put the Tesla Plaid powertrain in a Miata.

Of course I actually own the former, but looking to add the latter to the stable.
