Default New Details About 2022 Chevy Corvette Z06 and Other C8 Variants Emerge

Quote:
New details have emerged about a brace of high-performance C8s.

It's safe to say that the Corvette Stingray C8 has been a resounding success for Chevrolet. In fact, the biggest problem for customers has actually been getting hold of the C8, a situation that has recently been made more frustrating with news of a supply issue that caused the Corvette Assembly Plant to be temporarily closed.

While this matter resolves itself, we'll focus on some better news: the arrival of high-performance variants of the mid-engine C8 such as the Z06 and the ZR1. Thanks to new information gleaned by Motortrend from an anonymous source, we know a bit more about these and other C8 variants.

The Z06 will apparently make use of a 5.5-liter flat-plane crank naturally-aspirated V8 that will produce in the region of 615 to 625 horsepower. That's more than the 600 hp we expected from the Z06, which will reportedly debut this July. That falls short of the 650 hp and 650 lb-ft produced by the previous supercharged Corvette Z06, but the stock C8 has already proved it makes the most of the power it's got.

The Z06 will also be offered with optional carbon fiber wheels and likely carbon-ceramic brakes, but those won't come cheaply. In its most desirable spec, the Z06 will be close to a three-figure sports car, but most current C8s have sold for far more than their base sticker price of below $60k, so it's a sure thing that enthusiasts will be willing to pay for the Z06.

Even more extreme is the upcoming ZR1, reportedly a 2023 model. It will start off with the Z06's 5.5-liter V8 as a base, but two turbochargers will increase output to up to 850 hp. Not much else is known about the ZR1, but with that amount of power on tap, it should be an absolute monster.

At the other end of the sensible spectrum is the Corvette plug-in hybrid. We already knew a hybrid Corvette was on the cards last year; this one is presumed to use dual motors on the front axle and another at the back. There is no confirmation on the gas engine that could be used on the hybridized Vette, though, but with electric assistance, either of the V8s should.

The final two Corvettes will be notable for different reasons. First is the all-electric Corvette, and although it'll be bizarre to see a Corvette without a large-capacity V8 screaming away, it's got the potential to be even quicker than the gas-powered variants.

Last but most definitely not least, there's the mighty 2025 Corvette Zora. By combining the ZR1's twin-turbo V8 and the C8 hybrid's electric motor/s, it's anticipated to make around 1,000 horses. It'll be the priciest Corvette of all - perhaps around $150,000 - but like every other C8, it would still be a relative performance bargain compared to anything else you can get at the price.

The foundation has been laid for these high-performance Corvettes to take the C8 to new heights - we can hardly wait.

He wasn't my favorite secretary of defense, but Donald Rumsfeld sure could spin a yarn. The exact context escapes me, but I'm still in awe over his "known knowns," "unknown knowns," and "known unknowns." In the American political hogwash jargon lexicon, Rummy's Rumsfeldisms rank up there with Bill Clinton's, "That depends on what the meaning of 'is' is," and Kellyanne Conway's "Alternative facts." I know, no religion or politics at the dinner table. I mention Rumsfeld because when it comes to performance variants of the mid-engine Chevrolet Corvette, we've been dealing with unknown knowns and known unknowns for years now.

However, thanks to an anonymous source—let's call him/her "Deep Burble"—we know a lot more about the upcoming and totally badass Z06. And we have some solid intel on the even more outrageous ZR1. Plus, we have some solid confirmation that all five variants are coming—including a PHEV, a full EV, and the ridiculous Zora.

The point of this article is to lump together everything we know about them all in one spot. How good a source is Deep Burble? They nailed the fact that the 2022 Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing would have the supercharged LT4 and a manual.

First out the gate will be the Z06. We've been endlessly speculating about exactly what makes the new Z06 for many moons, but now we know: The Corvette Z06 will have a naturally aspirated 5.5-liter flat-plane crank V-8, just like the 1-2 finishing C8.Rs at the Daytona 24. But instead of only 500 hp like the corked-up racecar makes, the street car will produce between 615 and 625 hp. Torque output should be similar to the racecar, at around 480 pound-feet. This means that the C8 Z06 will make less horsepower than the C7 Z06. Get it all out now. We good? Mind you, the 6.2-liter LT4 V-8 needed a supercharger to spit out 650 ponies. The new Z06 mill will make more than 95 percent as much power au natural, and rev like a rabid squirrel all the way to 9,000 rpm. Are you getting Ferrari 458 Speciale vibes? I am. Also, rumor is Chevy benchmarked that very supercar.

The Z06 will also sport (optional) carbon fiber wheels, just like the Ford Shelby GT500 Carbon Pack and Ford GT. This will not be an inexpensive option. If you look at the Shelby's $18,500 Carbon Pack, you get a wing, rear-seat delete, and a carbon dashboard, in addition to the wheels. Most of that money, therefore, pays for the carbon fiber rims. Expect to see (also optional) gigantic carbon-ceramic brake rotors, and some extra sticky flavor of Michelin's world-beating Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires. The latest and greatest version of GM's MRC 4.0 (Magnetic Ride Control) will handle damping duties, and the aero will be C8.R-like.

Price? I'm hearing around $80,000, which is obviously too good to be true and close to $10K less expensive than the last Z06. But if the carbon wheels and brakes are in fact options, another $20,000 on top of the C8's $60,000 for essentially the new engine does make some sense. Bottom line: The one you and I will kill to drive will be in the $100,000-plus neighborhood.

2023 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1

Yes, there's going to be a Corvette ZR1. Chevy will mutate the Z06 into the ZR1 by plumbing two turbochargers into the aforementioned 5.5-liter flat-plane V-8. Horsepower will be in the 825 to 850 range. McLaren's already figured out how to squeeze 804 hp from its flat-plane twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8 in the Elva. The engine masters at Chevy should have no problem extracting a bit more power than the kids in Woking with an extra liter and a half of displacement to play with. Torque should be ungodly.

Beyond that, we know nothing more about the future ZR1. Price should start in the $120K neighborhood, similar to the C7 ZR1.

2023 Chevrolet Corvette PHEV

There will be a Corvette Hybrid—well, two actually, but let's concentrate on this one. Probably called E-Ray, expect the Hybrid C8 to be an AWD plug-in hybrid (PHEV) with two motors on the front axle, and possibly a third motor pancaked between the dual-clutch transmission and engine. Kiss the frunk goodbye, as that space will be used for the front traction motors and batteries.

What will the engine be? Our source didn't have any new info for us on this one, other than to confirm that it's coming. But our educated bet is that the PHEV will rock the Z06's 5.5-liter NA V-8. Why? The LT1 in the base C8 is a fine old pushrod workhorse, but by the time this PHEV hits dealers, it'll be old. Very old. An engine that's a decade newer will have better engine management software, and we're thinking that would better complement (and future-proof) a modern C8 hybrid. Like, quicker computers and stuff—I'm not a

But maybe not. We've heard other rumors that the LT1 will stick around, in detuned form. Hey, it's a known quantity, right? It's less likely, but maybe Chevy will go all BMW i8 and stick a V-6 or even an inline-4 behind the driver? We just don't know. Yet.

But as you'll read in a bit, there's good reason to think the hybrid will use the Z06's V-8. As for power, I figure the hybrid will slot in between the Z06 and the ZR1. A total system output of 775 hp feels about right. $100,000 for such a machine makes sense. Would there be room for a less expensive Corvette Hybrid with a non-V8? Oh yes, especially where it snows

2024 Chevrolet Corvette Electric

Have you heard? General Motors would like to sell totally emissions-free cars by 2035 and be carbon neutral as a corporation by 2040. You can't achieve those goals with big, fat gas-burnin' V-8s, can you? Hence, an all-electric Corvette. Could the electric C8 Corvette be called E-Ray? Yes, it could be—but the important part is, we're sure it's coming, and it's safe to assume that the technology in the C8 Hybrid will be shared with EV. In other words, you use the same motors for the front wheels, and simply power them with a larger battery pack. Price? Probably less than the ZR1 as the C8 EV will use powertrain pieces from other GM electric vehicles. When does it arrive? 2024 is a good guess. All we know for sure is, an EV C8 Corvette is imminent.

Default GM Begins Parking Incomplete Vehicles Waiting On Semiconductor Supply To Resume

Quote:
Meanwhile

DETROIT -- General Motors is extending production cuts at three global plants through at least mid-March and building but leaving incomplete vehicles at two other factories due to the global semiconductor chip shortage.

GM on Tuesday did not disclose how much volume it would lose in its latest action or which supplier and vehicle parts were affected by the chip shortage, but said the focus remains on keeping production running at plants building its highest-profit vehicles -- trucks, crossovers and SUVs. GM said it intends to make up as much lost production as possible.

"Semiconductor supply remains an issue that is facing the entire industry. GM’s plan is to leverage every available semiconductor to build and ship our most popular and in-demand products," GM spokesman David Barnas said.

GM could lose an estimated 111,450 vehicles, according to AutoForecast Solutions.

GM said it was extending downtime at plants in Fairfax, Kansas; Ingersoll, Ontario; and San Luis Petosi, Mexico, through mid-March, when it will reassess the situation, he said. In addition, GM will build but leave incomplete for later final assembly vehicles at plants in Wentzville, Mo., and Ramos Arizpe, Mexico.

Chip crisis pulls the reins on recovery

GM vehicles affected by the idled plants include the Chevrolet Malibu sedan along with the Cadillac XT4, Chevy Equinox and GMC Terrain crossovers, while the vehicles built for later final assembly include the Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon pickups and Chevy Blazer crossover.

Earlier this week GM idled the three factories where it extended downtime, and said it would halve production at a plant in South Korea

An Automotive Minute: Electric Vehicles in the Biden Adminstration
Many assume Democratic President Elect Joe Biden will be much more electric vehicle friendly, and that he may finally usher in the wave of electric vehicles anticipated since his years as vice president. But will this likely be the case.

Perfect storm

The shortage stems from a confluence of factors as auto manufacturers, which shut plants for two months during the COVID-19 pandemic last year, compete against the sprawling consumer electronics industry for chip supplies.

Consumers have stocked up on laptops, gaming consoles and other electronic products during the pandemic, leading to tight chip supplies. They have also bought more cars than industry officials expected last spring, further straining supplies.

The chip shortage has affected many automakers, including Toyota Motor Corp., Volkswagen Group, Stellantis, Ford Motor Co., Renault, Subaru Corp., Nissan Motor Co., Honda Motor Corp. and Mazda Motor Corp.

Asian chipmakers are rushing to boost production but say the supply gap will take many months to plug. German chipmaker Infineon said the shortage would worsen in the near term.

Cutting global output

The chip shortage is expected to cut global output in the first quarter by more than 670,000 vehicles and last into the third quarter, IHS Markit said. AutoForecast Solutions on Tuesday updated its estimate for lost production this year, saying the global industry could lose almost 1.3 million vehicles.

Honda and Nissan said on Tuesday they would sell 250,000 fewer cars in total this financial year due to the chip shortage.

Ford said last week the shortage was hitting production of its highly profitable F-150 pickup trucks, saying it could lose 10-20 percent of planned first-quarter vehicle production and earnings could fall by $1 billion to $2.5 billion.

Stellantis said it would idle its Canadian minivan plant in Windsor, Ontario, for three weeks until the end of February.

Taiwan, home to the world's largest contract chip maker, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., is at the center of efforts to resolve the shortage. U.S. officials discussed the issue with their Taiwanese counterparts last week.

Chinese officials said on Tuesday they had met with auto and chip companies, asking them to help ease the shortage. French state officials meet with auto and electronics industry leaders on Wednesday to discuss the issue.

The Mexican Automotive Industry Association said this week that chip shortages had hurt national auto production in January, and it would likely dampen output during the first half of 2021.

Default Chevy's New Corvette Z06 May Pack an Engine That Shatters a World Record

Quote:
Chevy's New Corvette Z06 May Pack an Engine That Shatters a World Record
The new mid-engined C8 Corvette may have drawn some controversy when it first launched (partly for ditching its traditional front-engined layout, partly for its admittedly unusual interior), but it's safe to say it's since proven to be quite a success. It's won prestigious awards, and has proven among the fastest-selling cars on sale in 2021.

Indeed, with all that, it can be hard to remember the Stingray is only the base model. Chevy reportedly has four more C8 variants planned for the next few years, all of which will be bonkers — and, perhaps happily for some Vette customers, not heed GM’s call for a zero-emissions future. Australia’s Wheels magazine, as spotted by AutoEvolution, offers some details.

The Corvette Z06 should be first out of the gate. Reports have the reveal tapped for July 2021; according to the new report, it will employ the “world’s most powerful naturally aspirated V8,” a 5.5-liter flat-plane V8 derived from the C8.R race car’s engine. While the C8.R is detuned to 500 horsepower, the Z06 will put out 617 hp. That figure blows away the comparatively paltry 526 horses Ford squeezed from the naturally aspirated 5.2-liter Voodoo V8 in the GT350. Even Porsche’s out-of-production 918 Spyder produced "just" 599 hp from its naturally aspirated 4.6-liter V8 (though it made up for it with hybrid components).

The report also says the Z06 will come with more hard-edged driving upgrades, including a 9,000 rpm redline, an upgraded suspension, quicker steering and wider wheels with Michelin Cup tires.

Chevy will allegedly have three more Corvette variants coming after the Z06. The Corvette E-Ray will pair the 6.2-liter V8 from the Stingray with an electric motor powering the front wheels for all-wheel-drive and a total output of about 590 hp. That said, as per the report, it will actually be quicker from 0 to 60 mph than the Z06, thanks to the e-motor's instant torque and the car's AWD grip.

The Corvette ZR1, in turn, will allegedly keep the harder-edged driver mods from the Z06 and add a twin-turbo setup to the 5.5-liter V8 for 804 hp. Finally, the Corvette Zora will reportedly be the halo model; it should add the E-Ray’s electric motor to the ZR1’s twin-turbo 5.5-liter V8 to hit 1,000 hp.

The Z06 will be the one to have IMO. People make too big a deal out of the HP and TQ numbers. It should be an absolutely atmospheric engine and awesome experience car, assuming they don't have the same problems as Ford's FPC engine. Probably the last of its kind too, with everything going hybrid or full EV.

I suspect in 10 years everyone will be longing for cars like this.

As long as it loses the gumpy body lines of the standard C8, I'm in.

Default Chevrolet's C8 Z06 Caught Sounding Like A Ferrari

It sure seems like Chevrolet is putting the flat-plane crank, dual-overhead cam engine from the Corvette C8.R race car in the mid-engine Corvette Z06. We just received spy video of a C8 Corvette prototype doing some launch control runs at a GM test track, and—aside from being very quick—our first impression is that this Corvette sounds a lot like a Ferrari 458.

Spy video shows a C8 Z06 prototype testing its launch control—and sounding an awful lot like the flat-plane-crank V-8 in Ferrari's last naturally aspirated mid-engine machine.

The c8 excites me about as much as an Audi R8; there is just something missing. The rear end is atrocious so that doesn't help. But there are probably 150 sports cars I would rather have. And I really liked the c5, c6, and c7. I want to be excited but I just can't be.

Agreed, but I’m hoping they can tweak the Z cars a little to make them better. I feel like it’s so close, yet so far away. The C8.R looks great IMO.

Default 2022 Chevy Corvette C8 Stingray Arrives With Improved Engine

Just wanted to update this thread for 2022 Model year

2022 Chevy Corvette C8 Stingray Arrives With Improved Engine
Quote:
As well as three new colors and a low-profile spoiler.

Chevrolet has released the first details of the 2022 Corvette Stingray. As we reported earlier this year, three new colors will be available: Hypersonic Gray, Caffeine, and Amplified Orange Tintcoat.

Other exterior additions include a new low-profile rear spoiler and a sportier front splitter. Both these features were previously part of the Z51 Package but will now be offered as standalone options.

Underneath the skin, Chevrolet made a few upgrades. The LT2 6.2-liter V8 boasts an upgraded direct injection fuel system and improved engine calibration.

According to Chevrolet, the Active Fuel Management range has been enhanced. The latter is basically a cylinder deactivation feature, which disengages four of the eight cylinders under a light load. This will likely lead to improved fuel consumption figures, but no official figures are available yet.

These changes have not affected the engine's power output. The 2022 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray will soldier on with 490 horsepower, or 495 hp with the available performance exhaust. Power is still sent to the rear wheels via an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission. According to Chevrolet, it should do 0 to 60 mph in 2.9 seconds when equipped with the full Z51 Package.

Both coupe and convertible models will still be available. The 1LT, 2LT, and 3LT trim levels are left unchanged, and all models can be equipped with the Z51 Performance Package.

Customers no longer have to add the Z51 Package to get Magnetic Ride Control. It will also be available as a standalone option, though no pricing has been released yet.

Dealers will start taking orders at the beginning of next month, and production is set to start in the third quarter. Pricing starts at $62,195 for the coupe and $69,695 for the convertible. These prices exclude tax, title, license, and destination fees.

Chevrolet has made a basic visualizer available while waiting for the full 2022 model configurator to go live. All the model images in this article were made using this rudimentary toy. The three new colors are featured, but if it was our car, we'd spec it in Rapid Blue with Black Trident, Bright Red brake calipers, High Wing carbon fiber spoiler, and Adrenaline Red seats.

Default Hotly Anticipated Chevy Corvette C8 Z06 Delayed Years

Hotly Anticipated Chevy Corvette C8 Z06 Delayed Years

A number of factors—the pandemic, demand for the regular Vette—have pushed the Z06 back.

https://www.motortrend.com/news/chev...-delayed-2023/

Quote:
Were you expecting the hotter C8-generation Corvette Z06 soon? Prepare to wait a while. The more powerful, track-ready Corvette variant has been spied testing a lot the past year—and a steady stream of juicy details have trickled forth, including that the latest Z06 will have a 600-hp-plus 5.5-liter flat-plane-crankshaft V-8 with twin cams (instead of pushrods) actuating its valves. According to GMAuthority.com, this spicy Corvette goodness won't hit dealerships for some time.

How long will you need to wait? Try until 2023. The sports car was expected to poke its head out sometime this year, perhaps as soon as this summer. A few reasons are behind the delay; first and foremost is the demand Chevy already has for the regular mid-engine Corvette. So many shoppers have sought the new Vette that Chevy had to cut short the C8's first model year (2020); the second model year's books are filling up fast. And already info is out on the 2022-model-year Corvette. Pandemic-related issues are also said to have played a role in the Z06's lengthened gestation.

In the meantime, GMAuthority says we can expect more special-edition models spun off the regular-grade C8 to satiate buyers looking for a little something extra from the Corvette. Other special Vettes, we assume, also will be pushed back; those would include the Corvette ZR1, a plug-in hybrid, an electric model, and even the hypercar-challenging Zora.

I wonder if GM was caught not looking on third base by Fords Lightning. I bet they are reevaluating their road map.

Nah. They have ADM on corvettes and camaros and can’t seem to run their plants for more than two weeks every two months. I think they’re just screwed on the production side.

2022 C8 Chevy Corvette Gets More Expensive
by Sebastian Cenizo
Price hikes hit the Z51 package and other options.

After learning the news last week that GM won't help tuners crack the C8 Corvette's ECU, many were disappointed. Despite a lack of aftermarket support and the announcement of price increases for 2021 models, demand for the mid-engined Chevrolet Corvette is insanely high. Unfortunately, that doesn't mean that the 2022 C8 gets a reprieve from price hikes. Corvette Action Center has come across pricing on the Chevy dealer Order Work Bench system and has discovered that the C8 is getting a $1,000 price increase across the range, and the destination fee has gone up from $1,095 to $1,295.

Chevrolet
2020-2021 Chevrolet Corvette C8 Top View Chevrolet

Furthermore, the highly popular Z51 Performance package has swelled in price to $6,345. The E60 Front Lift option is more expensive too (now $2,260), Black Trident wheels will now cost you $2,995, and the High Wing is now priced at $1,250. Fortunately, not all options have gotten more expensive, as the 5VM ground effects package has been discounted from $4,895 to $4,445. There will also be a new low profile spoiler available to order, with this proving much more affordable than the High Wing at $595. Despite these increases, we're sure that the C8 will continue to fly off dealer lots, especially since the 2022 model year sees the addition of the IMSA GTLM Championship Edition. This is $6,595 option that can be added to the 3LT trim with the Z51 package.

There will also be three new paint options for buyers to choose from in Hypersonic Gray metallic, Amplify Orange tintcoat, and Caffeine metallic. It's also worth remembering that the 2022 model year is upgraded with a new fuel injection system and an Active Fuel Management system, neither of which change the output of the LT4 6.2-liter V8. As a reminder, this produces 490 horsepower and 465 lb-ft of torque in standard form while the addition of the Z51 package gives you a high-performance exhaust and five more horsepower, as well as an electronic LSD, upgraded suspension, and Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires.

Wish I had the lift. It gets hairy out there. It's only a matter of time. That's why I grabbed the 21, Inflation is just going up and up and wayyy uppp. I had two really good offers but I would be out on the tax I paid. If I take an offer I have to trade up. Same with POS Type S I bought..

Chevrolet confirms the new Corvette Z06 will debut this fall.
While Chevrolet is still struggling to keep up with demand for the C8 Corvette Stingray, the next chapter in the mid-engine sports car's story is about to begin. We've already seen prototypes of the new Corvette Z06 being put through its paces, and now Chevrolet has released the first official teaser to get us excited.
We don't see the new Z06 in the short teaser, but we get to clearly hear its sweet-sounding engine start-up, rev, and accelerate as the mid-engine sports car is driven at high speed on the road and track. It sounds epic: Chevrolet teases the "street will never sound the same."

Technical details are still being kept under wraps, but the high-pitched powerplant sounds like a supercar, seemingly confirming rumors that the new Z06 will be powered by a flat-plane crank V8.

Rumors have claimed the Z06 will utilize a modified version of the 5.5-liter V8 found in the C8.R race car. In the road car, this naturally-aspirated unit is expected to generate over 600 horsepower and rev up to 9,000 rpm, with power sent to the rear wheels through an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission. This won't be the most powerful C8 Corvette either, as the rumored Zora range-topper will reportedly pack a twin-turbo flat-plane crank V8 and a hybrid system generating over 1,000 horsepower.

As for the styling, expect the Z06 to look more aggressive than the standard Stingray. Over the last year, camouflaged prototypes have been spotted out in the wild sporting flared wheel arches and larger wheels. Originally, the Corvette Z06 was expected to debut this month and go on sale for the late 2022 model year, but the pandemic has delayed these plans.
Instead, Chevrolet has confirmed the next-generation Z06 will be revealed this fall and go on sale for the 2023 model year, and it sounds like it will be worth the wait.

How about crank up production before making variants instead of letting stealerships charge arms and legs?

GM reminding me of Nvidia right now...

Um, it’s not just GM doing that it’s damn near every dealer. Supply is low, demand is high. Basic economics would tell you that pricing would increase. I see nothing wrong with this. It’s a non needed luxury item. If you want it, pay more than the next guy to get it. Or, wait for production to catch up and pay msrp.

Funny you mention computer chips, since a shortage of such is exactly what's causing the problem that you're attributing to GM.

I'm attributing GM segmenting a market that already can't meet demand like a bunch of tools instead of just pausing this type of stuff until things actually manage to correct themselves.

It's the same thing Nvidia did with it's Ti launches.

"Products don't exist and you can't actually get them anywhere but scalpers? Here, let us release even more boutique products that are more expensive, take production from the already languished MFR of our other offerings, and STILL have them be inaccessible!"

Genius.

It's intentional. They get to release a higher priced product and shift the already short-supply parts to higher profit margin offerings since they'll never meet demand anyways, but that just makes them sleazeballs.
