News Subaru Of America, Inc. Reports Best-Ever April Sales (2021)

  • Best April Ever: Monthly sales increase 100.5 percent over April 2020
  • Best April Ever for Crosstrek, Forester, and WRX/STI

Subaru of America, Inc. today reported 61,389 vehicle sales for April 2021, the company’s best-ever April sales and a 100.5 percent increase compared to April 2020 when the coronavirus pandemic impacted the global economy at large. The automaker also reported year-to-date sales of 221,815, a 37.6 percent gain compared with the same period in 2020.

“Our retailers showed their desire by delivering the best-ever April in the history of Subaru with an increase of 100.5 percent,” said Thomas J. Doll, President and CEO of Subaru of America, Inc. “As Spring car buyers look for the ideal vehicle to carry them through their warm weather adventures, our commitment to offering the safest, most reliable and family-friendly vehicles on the market makes Subaru their top choice.”

All carlines saw gains in April 2021 which marked the twelfth consecutive month of 40,000+ vehicle sales for Subaru. Forester was the top performer by volume for the month with 19,452 sales, an increase of 106.3 percent over prior year and its best-ever April. Crosstrek and WRX/STI sales were notably strong as each carline achieved its best April ever. Crosstrek posted a 180.7 increase, while WRX/STI posted an increase of 133 percent compared to April 2020. Also, in April, the automaker celebrated the sale of the eleven-millionth Subaru vehicle in the U.S.

“We’re proud that our award-winning SUV vehicles, as well as the amazing WRX/STI, could deliver an all-time best April,” said Jeff Walters, Senior Vice President of Sales. “We expect car buyers will continue to make Subaru top-of-mind this Spring, but our results will be influenced by vehicle availability due to the well-documented chip shortages impacting production throughout the auto industry.”

No surprise here. First real full pandemic month was April last year.

What's with the Ascent sales slumping? Even the Impreza is keeping its head above water compared to last year.

Probably availability and/or recall issues are taking a toll.

Ignore that number. I don't care about a 100% increase. Of course it was going to be higher. What I'm impressed with, is with inventory kinda being a thing last month, is it's the best EVER April.

Depends on it's profitability vs. investment required - The 370z soldiered on for years because there wasn't much R&D money in it to keep the platform going. Also consider the shared parts between the Legacy/Outback & Impreza/Crosstrek which helps make a more compelling argument to keep them around.

I think the legacy would get dumped first though, frees up production space for better selling models - the mid-sized sedan is a dying market, at least the impreza has a lower msrp & hatch available for an "entry level" Subaru.

In that case just produce one body type and bring back the Legacy wagon.

Honestly a current gen Impreza wagon is the same size as the 4th gen Legacy wagon; I think that would be a better move than a Legacy wagon & outback being sold; but more wagons on the market is never a bad thing.

WRX OR STI WAGON PLEASE AND THANK YOU.

There is no Impreza wagon. Are you talking about the hatchback Impreza?

The BL Legacy wagon was exactly a foot longer than the current Impreza hatchback. It had 33.5 ft³ seats up, and 65.4 ft³ seats down cargo area. Impreza 5 door has 20.8 ft³ of space behind the rear seats and when they're down opens up 55.3 ft³.

Also the Impreza hatchback doesn't have a d pillar window like the GD Impreza wagon and Legacy wagon did. Or that the Levorg has. So it's not at all a wagon no matter how large the footprint gets. Levorg is a wagon and the Impreza 5 door isn't that. SoD would have had a many heart attack if it were. Pearls would be clutched.

So are you saying you want the Levorg or a hatchback WRX?

WAGON = levorg.
USDM hatchback = hatchback.

While Subaru has referred to the Impreza 5-door as a wagon various times, along with 5 door and hatchback, I've come to my own way of differentiating wagons from hatchbacks... at least Subaru's.

My first Subaru was a '92 Legacy wagon. It was an amazing car and it made me a believer in Subaru. Of the many, one of the things I liked about it was the ability to "tailgate" in the rain... open the hatch, sit on the opening, and chill in the fresh open air.

Try that with an Impreza. It's a hatchback.
