Default Custom lip / splitter

Hello Nasioc, I'm looking for a way to protect the bottom of my front bumper. I have a 2006 STi with an Ings front bumper so none of the factory or OE style lips will work. I was playing with the idea of purchasing a sheet of aluminum and cutting it to fit and rolling the front upwards slightly. It would be great if anyone has had experience with something similar to this and how they have mounted it so I can try to work something out. It will be strictly for protecting the bottom of the bumper from bumps and scrapes.

Just use PPF.

Anything you attach to the bottom will just make it lower and cause it to crash into the ground more easily. So you'll do damage instead of a minor paint scratch which can be easily repaired.

You're not wrong but I also don't think 1/16 aluminum is going to be the difference between hitting the ground and not hitting the ground.

It is if you had 1/16 of clearance otherwise...

Honestly, look into a sheet of HDPE. It will take scrapes and hits from random things better than aluminum which bends, crinkles and gets very sharp edges especially as thin as you're looking at. HDPE will crack if hit hard enough, but holds its shape well, can be heated and molded to fit contours, is very easy to shape and will be less likely to damage your bumper. I've been using it for years to make various car parts and it works very well. You can get it in black so as it get scratched it will be black all the way through. Get 1/4" if you want a 3" lip. If you just want something to protect the bottom of the bumper from scrapes then get 1/8" and cut it 1/4" in from the outer edge of your bumper. Won't be very visible unless you get down low but will do a good job protecting the bumper itself.

I kinda have a vision of what you describe with some well placed Professional Awesome titanium splitter pads installed to provide protection. Not good at drawing so cannot transfer vision to computer or paper.

I remember seeing this product a while back on some fb ads. Maybe you could find one that might be close in size and trim or or adapt it or something. Or make something similar out of the HDPE mentioned above.

https://www.scrapearmor.com/

It's called Scrape Armor in case Nasioc borks the link.

This is my recommendation as well. If you are just looking to protect the bumper and not provide any aerodynamic benefits a sheet of HDPE will be perfect. As for mounting it, I would use some aluminum square tube back to a few mounting points for the suspension and/or bumper.

HDPE, particually UHMW-HDPE is fantastic for this type of abuse. However as mentioned, it is a thermally malleable, so I only would use it in places for friction/rubbing. Far cheaper than titanium plates and easier to mold/mount.

If doing an actual splitter, talking race car splitter, alumilite is hands down the best option. Again, you can rivet hdpe pucks to it for rub protection.
