02 / 03 WRX Stock flywheel weight?
Does anyone know the weight difference between the stock WRX '02 Flywheel and the heavier flywheel they started installing mid way through '03??
I know the TSB about the 02 flywheel, recommends the new heavier wheel to reduce the clutch "shudder" issue found on the earlier models, but since I have to replace the flywheel anyway (and have decided against an aftermarket lightweight), whether it would be worth sticking with the lighter (upgraded0) '02 stock flywheel... I've searched and found some people reporting between 23-26lbs, but no reference to parts #'s or specific years... I believe the '03(TSB) Flywheel to be part # 12342AA07 and the (upgraded) '02 Flywheel is part # 12342AA050

I don't know the exact weight of the 02 flywheel but I recently replaced my 02 oem flywheel with an act streetlite (which is 13.7lbs I believe) and there's really not that much of a difference. The clutch does engage in a slightly different spot but other than that I really can't tell much of a difference between the act streetlite and the oem so I would think that the oem must have been pretty damn light too, maybe in the high teens? I'd say go for the act anyway cause even a small improvement is still an improvement and it costs the same as the oem flywheel. I've driven newer wrx's though with the heavier flywheel and it just feels like crap to me...

I've searched in the past and never found any info on the stock 02 flywheel weight other than "yeah the 02 flywheel was lighter". I don't think anyone on here knows, hence the lack of replies...
And I got the stock 02 clutch, just like the flywheel the clutch was also better in 02. |

Yup just got confirmation from the dealer as he pulled my flywheel (Part # 1242AA505)out - the '02 Flywheel is 22lbs 4ozs....
Now this is where it gets strange... the listed weight on the "shudder kit" (part # 1242AA0701) is 12.1lbs - I very much doubt that's the new flywheel... perhaps it's the new clutch?? |

After more searching... STI Lightweight Fly Wheel (5MT). 12.1lbs lightened vs stock 23.10 lbs. Machined from Chromium/Molybdenum. Reducing rotational mass allows for faster engine revs. Recommended use with Sti clutch cover and disc.
So looks like the 03 Stock is 23.1lbs... It would be pretty cool if he's giving me the STi Flywheel, but I'm betting he read the wrong spec line! |

let us know how it works out. Are you installing the parts yourself or at the dealership?
the part numbers you listed should help other ppl in the future. |

Getting it done at the dealer... - Here's the breakdown as far as cost:
12342AA071 - Flywheel - $283.20 30210AA570 - Cover CP C - $191.38 30100AA840 - Disk CP CL - $142.95 800610740 - Bolt (8) - $ 16.72 30502AA080 - Clutch Release - $154.85 Parts Total: $789.10 Labor: $633.60 EPA/Misc Charges $ 31.10 Grand Total: $1453.80 - 10% AAA discount On the way home the clutch pedal felt much lighter, almost too light, and kind of grabby - even stalled it once at an uphill stoplight - hopefully it will smooth itself out as it breaks in... Quote:
you could get an oem clutch kit for 240 bucks from here: http://clutchcityonline.com/subaru_wrx.htm and an act streetlight for 250: http://www.clutchcityonline.com/ACT/flywheel_subaru.htm instead of being out 787 dollars for parts, you'd be out 500, AND you'd have a better flywheel (cro-mo). while i can agree that not everyone is up to swapping their own clutch and flywheel, this is a 4 hour job. $633/4 = $150+ per hour. i say eff that! after throwing the shop owner $50 and buying pizza/beer for a buddy, i was out less than 600 bucks. they're socking you for more than TWICE that much. |

I need more friends like you with access to a lift/shop and the knowledge of what to do. Most people who haven't done it before, it takes 6-8 hours from what I've read!! 12 if you get stuck on the flywheel bolts!! ; )

i know... i don't want it to sound like i'm chewing YOU out... cuz you're just doing what you've got to do to get your car back on the road.
it just steams me how much dealers make (steal?) on parts and labor. at least everything seems to be done correctly. the only thing worse than paying a lot of money is paying a lot of money and still having a broken car! |

I do a lot of work on my car but I wouldn't want to do a clutch job. Anyway, I had mine done at the dealer for less than $1k including a differential fluid change but I brought them the $250 act flywheel. I had asked another Subaru dealer that was closer to me for a quote and they wanted like $1300 before adding in cost of the oem flywheel and a diff fluid change and they wouldn't put an aftermarket part on for me. Search around some and you may find a better dealer!

I spec'd a ACT Stage2 Clutch with ACT Streetlite Flywheel (13.9lb) for $649 shipped from Gruppe-S.com
I got a quote from my dealer for $400 for the install, I supply all the parts. That works to $1049 total for a fully aftermarket clutch/flywheel set. |
