I've also pointed out to her that since 2015 (she hasn't kept a car more than 2-3 years, so we should look at a lease for her. She's worried about mileage since we used to both commute more, especially her, she was in the office 5 days a week, I don't see that changing any time soon), plus if we go the 3 car route, if we get a Pacifica for the kid hauling, if we go anywhere with them, we'd likely drive that and not my fun car or her daily, keeping the miles down. I always though Kia was the step up. We saw a Telluride in traffic yesterday and I pointed out the looks of it, though she said she can't remember what the Palisade looked like while looking at the Kia. LOL

Since it’s on your list.
My wife has a 2017 Pilot Elite, she wanted the second row captains chairs and that was he only way to get them, Elite b!tches! She’s put 61K zero trouble miles on it, it’s her second Pilot, the first one went for 180K miles and it needed tires so we just bought a new one instead. It’s a nice people hauler, I tried to get her to get the Odyssey instead but she refuses to drive a minivan. |

My take on the Palisade vs Telluride Palisade: Overall more luxurious interior More hi tech cabin with full LED dash display Power folding 3rd row seats (this slightly compromises 3rd row leg room compared to Telluride due to power folding seat motors) Annoying push button transmission making 3 point turns in a tight parking lot a real PITA Really polarizing styling (some cool visual cues but overall, it looks ugly to me) The first year model (made in Korea) were plagued with weird interior odor issue (culprit was found to be materials used in the headrests) and supposedly this problem has been resolved. Telluride: Marketed towards a more rugged/outdoors customer base while still maintaining some premium luxury feel. Slightly less advanced cabin tech (analog gauges with center digital LED display in top trim model) manual folding 3rd row seats with more legroom Definitely more popular looks and exterior styling Traditional shifter lever which I prefer. Both vehicles have only one choice of engine and transmission in all trim levels so this won't be a deciding factor. Prices are also very similiar between the two with about $1k difference depending on trim. Both companies do the 10 year powertrain (engine/tranny) warranty if long term ownership matters to you. I know with Kia the factory warranty is 3 years (advanced electronics) 5 year bumper to bumper otherwise) 10 year powertrain I paid $1400 for the extended full 10/100k year bumper to bumper warranty on mine so I'm definitely keeping for at least 100k miles which I'll likely hit in 6-7 years. |

I really like my wife’s 2019 Highlander. I like the redesign as well. I’m tempted to get one myself. She has the V6 so I can’t comment on the hybrid. The V6 gets decent enough mileage and is quick enough.

A lot of folks were pinning their hopes on the new 2021 Kia Sorrento hybrid as a solid alternative, unfortunately the standard non-plug in hybrid being sold in the N america is FWD only, with the AWD being non-hybrid Right now for AWD lovers, the X-Line appears to be the trim of choice Altho there is rumor the upcoming Sorrento PHEV will be available in AWD as it is in their home market in korea |

The dealer we bought the Edge at has a "Lifetime Powertrain Warranty" included at all there dealerships, which is a big selling point. You have to maintain the car (with receipts) at factory recommended service intervals to keep that warranty, it's only available to the initial owner. We purchased a maintenance plan for the Edge in the initial hopes that we'd keep it for a long time, but these electrical gremlins have obviously changed that. https://www.geraldauto.com/lifetime-warranty/ |

Push buttons however, you always have to look down at the goddamn buttons to find and then push P, R, D . Again with tight maneuvers in a crowded parking lot or doing a quick 5 point turn on a narrow road, this sucks. |

And this is why column shifters are still preferred by many truck drivers/buyers.

I don't mind the dial shifter on the PacHy at all. Hard stop at full left for P. Two clicks to the right for R. All the way to the right for D. No issues.
Another thing to look out for as a nice feature in large 3-row vehicles is a 360 around/surround view system. PacHy has it (in our Limited Hybrid trim). Oh, and look for adaptive cruise as well--you'll be addicted soon enough if you get it. |

I think the Highlander we drove had the 360 Camera. She isn't a "cruise control" type of person. The Edge ST has lane monitoring and an auto drive/lane centering on Cruise Control options. She hates them and never uses them, ironic since she tends to be a center of the lane driver, so often the pass side go on/over the white line. I use both often when driving her car, she complains about it every time that I leave them on. She also hates the auto-stop at red lights and turns it off all the time while I'm driving. I actually like it.

sigh
So a little back story on the wife's car history. 2008 - we bought a new Edge AWD (At the same dealer we bought the ST at, though under a different ownershiop). Drove it for 110k-ish until it started having transmission issues. Traded that in for a new base 2015 CX-5 that she hated, and we got rid of it pretty quickly. Traded the CX-5 in for a "demo" 2015 Sonata Sport Turbo that had 4-5k on it and that we both really liked. Drove that for a 60-70k when she decided that she wanted an SUV with a 3rd row. Sonata was purchased from the dealer group (Gerald Auto) that has the lifetime warranty. March 2019 - We went in to the Ford dealer (that had the month or 2 prior been bought by the Gerald Auto group - Yes, the dealer is called Gerald Ford ) looking at the 18/19 Explorers. Drove a few trim levels and didn't really like them all that much. Going from a Sonata Sport to a big heavy V6 SUV was underwhelming. They felt big and sluggish, I couldn't see the wife driving one and really enjoying it. The Edge ST had been reviewed online in the month or 2 prior, but I hadn't really seen any on the road at that time. Dealer had 3 in stock, a black one that we drove, a dark grey one and the blue one that sat inside the showroom that we ultimately bought. I had suggested we look at the Edge ST, because realistically, the 2-4 times a year that we need a 3rd row isn't worth paying the few grand extra for the equal features of the Edge ST and a XLE or Sport Explorer of the previous generation. So last night when I walk in the door, she says she wants to go look at the Explorers at a closer Ford dealer, not the Gerald Auto group. Gerald is about a 17-19 minute drive from us, this other local dealer is about 5-6 mins away in the opposite direction. That dealer just moved from 15 mins away to a brand new building/lot. We walk in and there's a big sign on the front door "Must Wear A MASK" and we could see the "receptionist" standing at the front desk about 3 feet away, no mask on. She walked away soon after we walked in, so not sure what her job was, but it it was ironic. We get a salesguy and explain that we want to look at different trims of Explorer, that we have an Edge ST but want a larger vehicle with a 3rd row. Some of her stipulations, must have black interior. Not sure if she wants a XLE, Limited or ST, we want to look at a few and drive them to see. While he looks through his inventory and into the lot, we look at a 2020 in the showroom, a Limited with beige interior. So we're looking around at the features of that and wait for 10-15 mins for him to pull a car around. He ends up pulling up a white 2021 Explorer ST for us to drive. Gives us the keys and we head off. It's a big vehicle. Has some niece features, dual front massage seats, big touchscreen. Acceleration is decent, doesn't feel faster than the Edge ST, but it's not slow. We get back and start talking general numbers and the hit on the Edge ST will be steep. Very steep, probably more than we're comfortable with right now. He tried to tell us to look for a 2020 since Ford has financing offers or to keep an eye out for offers on the 2021's. So we leave. Driving home, she gives me the "I wanted an explorer before and you talked me into the Edge ST" speech. I said we should still look at the other cars on the list, but she said that she likes the Explorer ST and that's the one she wants. Not sure that going into a 2020 Explorer ST will solve any of the issues that we've had with the Edge ST, first model year quirks and all. At one point later last night, the financial part I think started to hit her and things like "maybe in a year from now" or "put it up private party and see if it sells", but I think we're going to be stuck with the Edge ST for a while longer. We've been able to pay extra each month on both cars for a while, but that extra $100 or so hasn't really made a huge dent in the payoff vs the value of it. So not really sure what's going to happen. I suspect that in late Feb/early March when she gets the new larger bonus after her promotion, things may change on her end, but we'll see. I did a quick search and I found a couple leftover 2020 Explorer ST's in the Chicagoland area, so maybe if some of those are still in stock when she's ready, I suspect we may end up in one of those. Plus we haven't tried going back to Gerald dealer and tried to get a fourth time "returning customer" deal. Last edited by blue-sun; 01-05-2021 at 09:57 AM. |

My wife still brings up the fact that I traded my 9 year old STi, that she arranged for me, when I got the SS. I didn’t have room to keep it and they offered a lot of it to trade yet I still hear about it every now and then. I wouldn’t says she’s mad though.

Also, I have suggested we do 3 year leases for her car. She's worried about driving too many miles a year. Maybe we can revisit that if she goes for the Explorer ST. |

They never forget and it's never their decision/fault. Vehicle purchases are no different.
Now that I have a new vehicle my wife is looking to trade in her '16 MDX. She has made a list and the Traverse, Palisade, Telluride and Explorer are on it so far. Re: Explorer ST. Considering they come in about $60k + your negative equity, lease might the way to go if you can keep the miles off. My wife leased a vehicle (BMW convertible) when we were dating and when it came time to turn it in (married at that point), she was WAY upside down on the residual value and nearly 15k miles over the lease limit. That's how I ended up in a BMW I hated for 3 years. Last edited by Rice & Gravy; 01-05-2021 at 10:31 AM. |

I still took a loss on my Abarth, but at least I paid it off before getting raped on a trade in value. Lesson learned. I put 60k miles on my FXT in 5 years of ownership and sold it for half what I paid, which was more than what I owed, so I call that a win. Not to pry, but could you sell the Edge private sale and at least come close to even? |

So I guess that if we trade it in somewhere other than another Gerald dealership, that plan is not going to get us a huge refund. Maybe 60% of the Maintenance plan, but I doubt it'll be that much. If we can transfer those if we sell private party, then I can "inflate" the selling price and include those. Things that are TBD. |

Just out of curiosity, what has Carvana/Carmax offered?
If you haven't, I assume you will check with them? Many years ago, I tried trading my WRX with Subaru and they offered me $800. Carmax gave me $4k. |
