Tires tires tires. Tires. Cuz you need 4 for a car. I once borrowed.my mom's little dinky acura 1.8. The tires were so bald and we went on a trip to the mountains with it. It was horrible. We slid.out on black ice just less than 1 mile from the ski resort. We had to get a tow.

My mom crashed into a stop sign post which was almost 100 meters away, because the road was just all ice and packed down snow.

I think after that incident, we got snow tires.

Snow tires + awd = ftw

Only time my feels like a race car and i drive it like such in the winter. The ability to start and stop and corner makes me feel sorry for all the morons out there being roadblocks driving 20-40mph under the limit.

Awd + snows has saved me in a few crappy situations for sure.

It's funny seeing rwd trucks have to accelerate rediculously slowly when it's slick and most SUVs as well when I blow by them with my eco box.

seriously though sheer ice is a bitch snow tires help a lot but sheer ice will make anything you are trying to do be extremely hard.

Only reason I like the salt lol

yup, i had to slow down to 35mph in an 80mph interstate a few weeks ago because of sheer ice. only studs and chains would have helped there.

my Excursion in RWD mode is better than a lot of RWD trucks because it doesn't have an open differential and it has studded tires. in 4wd mode it is amazing but doesn't stop really well due to the tires, real studded snow tires it would probably run circles around my impreza

Studs are no doubt the best option, most people don't live somewhere that would require them or justify how infrequent they will be used.

The long wheel base that trucks have is great for deep snow however.

Default 2012 Impreza thread

And the 7200lbs empty weight, which combined with the LSD makes it so great in just RWD mode

I wonder how much a LSD. in 4.11 gears in for the impreza.... i know subaru had one

Edit:
https://www.rallysportdirect.com/par...d-1-5-way-r160

Not 100% sure, but i think they are cheaper for my chevy 12 bolt or my sterling 10.5"....

Is it essential to replace the gasket on the rear diff when changing the fluid? Plan on ordering extra gaskets to have in case the ones on there now are shot...

I did use a new gasket on the drain/fill plugs, didn't want any potential leaks.

i just use the permatex blue or red thread sealer. the book just calls for the subaru equivalent to be put on the plugs (for MT differential anyway) no need to pull cover unless you are curious...there are no gaskets on the MT diff IIRC

CVT is slightly different so not sure off top of my head and no time to look it up.

I know my view on it is not a popular one.

I have never owned a car that I have touched the diff fluid on. Never once has any issues with a diff wearing out or needing replacement.

Biggest thing to look out for is if it is leaking. I won't change the fluid in the diffs ever, also the more you open them up the more contaminants can get in.

For the CVT however it is highly recommended to not change the fluid since it is very sensitive to contaminants. Subaru will really recommend against changing it even if you ask as well.

Yes, Subaru will say not to change the CVT fluid, and they’ll be more than happy to charge you $8k when it goes bye bye.

I don’t see why changing the diffs would be an issue, and a really cheap maintenance item at that. To each his own I guess

Snapped a couple pics of mine yesterday on my lunch break. This is before and after some light mods.

plus they are vented....they are already open to the elements. i have never seen a diff with a filter on the end of the breather

is the cam chain tensioner behind the dipstick tube? i just pulled my dipstick to check my oil and for some reason either I am being an idiot after almost 6 years of ownership or there is something behind it stopping the dipstick from the last 1" and seating.....

so annoyed

For motor oil?

I know the kink in the dipstick makes it not want to go in at some angles.

I like those rims. I thought the splash guards looked good on.

Yes, i pulled the tube, nothing i can see blocking it. Slightly worried cam chain guide broke and fell to bottom

hopefully my mini camera will be here tomorrow so i can get a good look inside. from what i can tell all i need to do is tweak the dipstick tube retention bracket <1/32" and it works normally. unless somehow the retention bracket got bent, i have no idea what happened.

completely unrelated but are factory O2 sensors are laser engraved with Denso and the Subaru part number

thanks, the wheels are 17" BR-Zs. and it's hard to see, but the splash guards were replace by rally armour mudflaps. and i just realized that i didn't take any decent pictures of the front end.

From what i could see with an endoscope, there was nothing in there, just minimal clearance. So I tweaked the bracket and put it back in, it might actually work better now.... must of bumped it. So dumb

I stuck it in the back cylinder on the pax side too, decent carbon, I didn't find the light control until i was done. I might pull my plugs in 1000 miles just to see how they are looking after new O2's and i will try to scope cylinders again.

Nope, changed the diff fluid 3 times with no gasket change, no leaks.

Default Amsoil CVT fluid

i know there is disagreement on whether it is necessary or even wise to do so, but in Sept, at my 60k maintenance, i had my mechanic change/flush the CVT fluid with Amsoil CVT fluid. (it's unclear to me (i'll have to ask him next time), how much he flushed/changed for the $60 he charged me.

i have been waiting a while to post this, but i think now, after many tankfuls and actually doing some simple statistics, i can definitely say that my mileage is up about 1.5 MPG over what it was with similar driving conditions previously.

for every tank i've purchased, i always note the average MPH for the tank since i have found that the average MPG for the tank is strongly correlated with MPH. (r^2 > 0.70)

anyway, i just thought i'd share this anecdote for those of your considering changing your fluid. i'm still (pleasantly) surprised that the fluid would make a difference, but it does mirror outbackdream's experience and he did note, if i recall correctly, the Amsoil ran at a cooler temp than the original factory fluid.

^I never really noticed anything when I had my CVT fluid done around 60k - all though they just replaced it with the Subaru CVT fluid.

As to whether its necessary or not - if you plan on keeping your car a long time, I'd say its necessary, especially since its an $8k part to replace.
