Default 2011-16 Impreza, 2013-17 Crosstrek - Auto Dim Door Mirrors w/ Approach Light Install

Hello Everybody,

I know from reading that there was no small amount of interest in this accessory when it was first revealed and I, too, am counted among the number of people interested in adding these two functions to our vehicles. To that end, and with assistance from Benny at SubaruOnlineParts.com I have acquired the mirrors, part number J201SSG300, at a discount to be the guinea pig for this mod.

So far I have done a fair amount of research and I think it is safe at this point to conclusively state that this is not a simple plug and play proposition, there are a few different components involved in making these mirrors work and, based on my '14 Crosstrek, the wiring simply is not there for much of it and will have to be added.

My research has indicated that there should be an EC+ (Electrochromic Positive) and EC- (Electrochromic Negative) output from the Auto Dimming Mirror with Compass (H501SFJ001; H501SFJ000; H501SFJ101 HL; H501SFJ100 HL) which is accessed on the Forester via a 5-wire harness that is not directly compatible with our vehicles. With that said, I believe that getting ahold of one of these harnesses, or at least getting a photo of the connector where it enters the mirror is all that will be required to put this piece of the puzzle to bed.

HL - Designates Homelink Equipped Models

Identifying the proper pins will allow for supplementation of the existing harness with additional wiring to carry this information. Indeed, from what I have seen in photos it is possible that the Forester version itself does things similarly with the same 3 wires our vehicles have siamesed together and the additional two leads loose within the same harness.

As far as the approach lighting aspect, this is by far the easiest portion of this project to approach. Simply tapping into the existing courtesy lighting circuit should provide the necessary current and I expect that any old ground will do, there should be one present on the mirror harness already which can then be tapped into.

My biggest concern with this whole project is connectors. I know a great deal of effort was gone to in order to locate the connectors for the door mirror turn signal mod on the part of Power6, quantum13, DDS4, and others. It is my goal to come up with a comprehensive guide to installing these mirrors in one of our cars that is as close to plug and play and possible and to that end I am hoping some members of the community here might be able to help locate the electrical connectors needed to interface with the auto-dimming and approach lighting wires.

Luckily, there's only one sealed 2-pin connector to identify for this purpose. When my auto-dimming mirrors arrived today I took a careful look at the connectors and determined that Subaru used the exact same connector for both applications, they just used the male version for one and female for the other to prevent someone from connecting the wrong sets of wires. This was confirmed both in appearance and by carefully test-fitting the wires together. I have photos of both halves of these connectors below and hope to identify them in the near future without much fuss. The connectors are both marked 'STC' with the male connector having what I believe to be an H but may also be an I. Based on other observations during my research it seems that this same connector is also used for the Blind Spot Detection module as well. If anyone has any idea what these connectors might be please don't hesitate to speak up!

Photos of the connectors follow, the black female connector is the Electrochromic Mirror connector while the white male connector is the Approach Lighting connector. In the interest of not using up my entire image quota on one topic I have linked to an IMGUR album containing all eleven photos of the connectors, click on the image to view the album.

Minor Update: The mirrors definitely fit physically into our housings and, perhaps more importantly, the holes for the friction dampener part are present. Can't help feeling like this was a planned accessory for our vehicles that was budget cut into oblivion. Very excited to be making progress adding this capability to my XV.

Okay time for an update to this.

I have come up short on finding the connector, so I've done the next best thing, sourced a set of Forester mirrors to pull the wiring I need out of. Keep in mind that I'm looking for a near-factory result, this is completely optional for anyone seeking to do this project, you could replace the Subaru connectors with either crimp connectors or some other kind of waterproof connector.

Next up was getting the EC information out of the auto-dimming rear view mirror. Again, for my purposes I have sourced the Forester wiring adapter from my local dealer, the SOA part number for this is H501SSG010. It outputs the same 3 wire set that our Crosstrek adapter has as well as an additional 2 wire set for the EC circuit. I'll put together a pin diagram for the mirror side in case anyone wants to retrofit their existing adapter with additional wires. I will hopefully be taking apart both adapters, fitting the Forester's 3-wire connection to the Crosstrek car-side connector (it's different from the Forester one) and sending the other two off to join the courtesy lights circuit on the way through the headliner, down the pillars, to each side mirror.

For the doors themselves I have sourced these 4-pin connectors from MUYI which had good reviews on Amazon. They're probably overkill for inside the door as they're super waterproof but at least I won't have any concerns about them being a weak point for the waterproofing on my car's electrical system. I will be wiring them using 20 AWG stranded wire unless the wire shows up and looks to be too small compared to the Subaru factory wiring. I bought this 20 AWG kit from Amazon which has six colors for this project, this should hopefully allow me to color code everything nicely on each side. I also picked up two rolls of 1 in. felt tape from JVCC which I am going to use to wrap the wires together and hopefully keep them from making noise against the roof of the car.

If you choose to use the same connectors (or similar ones) you'll want a good crimper like this one on Amazon. I also expect that I may want or need to use heat shrink tubing or connectors like these and if I do you'll want a heat gun like this one and ideally a reflector nozzle like this one. You may also want a fish tape like this one for pulling the wires through your head liner though I will report back later as to the actual method I end up using to get over to the pillars. This style of fish tape is nice because it's got low profile streamlined ends which won't hook anything you don't want to be hooking and should be able to find their way wherever you need them to.

I've just ordered some of these parts this evening but I hope to be updating this in the near future. I apologize for the non-authoritative nature of some of this information but this project is in-development as I go along and it is my intention, once I figure everything out, to create a comprehensive step-by-step guide to aid anyone looking to do this project in the future.

Okay, quick update. Do not order the connectors listed above on Amazon. They're massive. I didn't do enough due diligence on them and pulled the trigger and am now regretting it. I'm going to refrain from posting any further connector suggestions here until I'm sure what I've ordered is suitable but I did the smart thing and went to Digi-Key to find things instead of getting caught up in the heady throes of Prime Shipping. More details to follow upon receipt.

Minor update but one I'm feeling pretty darned good about. I sat down with my shiny new electrical tweezers whose quality more than met my expectations especially considering the price today and started tackling the matter of sourcing the wiring I want from the Forester mirror assemblies. It took some finagling but I managed to figure out how to pull pins out of the 12 pin connector meaning I can get the existing wiring I want out of the connector 100% intact, the connectors will be intact meaning I can possibly sell these assemblies down the road in working condition minus the features I'm liberating, and most importantly of all I was able to test fit the mirror blinker wires I bought from www.defroy.org (AKA quantum13 on NASIOC successor to groundbreaking development work on the blinker mod and original wire kit sales done by Power6 over at NASIOC) and confirmed that the connectors have identical pin requirements. This means that anything I pull out of the Forester mirrors could be put into a crosstrek's door connector if I so wished or, if I really wanted to get insane about it, I could upgrade the connector size in our doors to the ones used on the Forester and get a really factor fit. I'm not going to do this, mind you, but it's cool to know it's possible and maybe someone else down the road will want to do so for whatever reason.

Boostin23, Your car is factory equipped to run Auto-Dimming/Approach light mirrors. (If you have a MY18 crosstrek, if you have a wrx/sti read below)

JFB, I am about to do this install on my 15 wrx base. I have put a lot of time into research for this and can provide you with part numbers for almost anything and what you will need.

The forester mirrors are different. They are a taller mirror and DO NOT fit the WRX/outback/Legacy.
If you want the most factory install you will need to source mirror housings from an 16/17 outback/legacy. They were designed to have the approach mirrors plug and play and have all need harnesses within the mirror.

For the dimming function, it is completely controlled via the inside dimming mirror. I know the forester has a 5 pin harness, and your year crosstrek has a 3 pin. but if you look closely enough, you will see that the integral harness off the Interior auto dimming mirror has to 2 pins that don't connect to anything within the jumper harness used to connect the mirror to the vehicle harness. Just PM me with any questions, soon ill start my install post on how I installed/wired my accessory mirrors.

I saw the harness that goes from Mirror turn signal to door harness with pins and all on eBay for like $20 which isn't bad, the problem is that my car has the cable missing from the turnsignal/flasher unit to the bulk plug harness in the kick panel that the door harness connects to before the door so at least it's an easy fix as it's all inside the cabin.

do these mirrors have heated function as well or is it a different part#?

Looking for one with Auto-dimming, approach lighting and heated option

EDIT: Just looked around at the mirror images and installation instructions and it seems to have heated function as well, it would be great if someone can confirm that these mirrors would indeed work with in my case 2013 Impreza premium

If someone can let us know part number for atleast a terminal (either male or female side ones), that would be great

thanks

According to parts Subaru dot com, the autodimming mirror with compass for a 2013 Impreza is H501SSA101

https://parts.subaru.com/p/Subaru_20...501SFG200.html

But then using Subaru online parts:

https://www.subaruonlineparts.com/sku/h501sfg200.html#

It says it's NOT compatible with 2013 Impreza
