Default ever look at a G35 and wonder

what could have been?

I have.
From time to time, I imagine myself driving about the town in that gorgeous machine. Dont get me wrong, I love my STi And I know we've had our fair share of G35 vs. STI threads. Never the less, I figure I cant be the only one. I've heard people say that in a perfect world they would own both an STI and an EVO. Well, in MY perfect world, I would go with a G35 and an STI (I'm halfway there)! And hell, as long as we're in the business of wishing, an even More perfect world for me would involve owning a Zonda C12 and a real Hummer (NOT the H2). One can dream I suppose.

In any case, one day I got stuck behind a G35 in traffic and I found myself wondering 'what could have been', and right about then, we rolled past a glass building and I saw me starring back at me in my blue/gold baby just long enough to realize I couldn't see myself in anything else....

p.s. I love this banana guy, even better when you're playing music and he...er.. she..it goes to it.

whenever you want something and then get it, after a while that feeling wears off and you want something else. I'd bet anything if you sold the STi and got the G35, after a while you'd be looking at another car and "wondering" Keep the STi for at least 3 years and then evaluate if you want to switch. In the meantime you'll have to "suffer " with the STi.

TaoKane,

You are not alone. I love the G35 for the fact that it is gorgeous. But I would not give up the performance of the STi for looks. That is why I am driving a STi today.

It is kind of funny, I bought my STi at the same time that a friend of mine bought a G35 6MT. We let each other drive our cars. Everytime he drive my STi, he would wish he have a STi because it is so much fun to drive. And everytime I drive his G35 and I wish I have one because it is so pretty and comfy.

The perfect car would be the up and coming Infiniti GTR, which is basically a G35 coupe with 400 HP and 4WD. Which means it is the combination of the STi and the G35 today (actually it will be a little higher performance). It will be out in 2~3 years. You know I am saving up for it right now In the mean time, the STi would do.

So don't wonder, start working harder and save up, as the GTR will not be cheap (predict to be $50K~$70K), but it will worth every penny like the STi. I predict it will have Z06 performance with Infiniti quality and luxury

That does sound pretty good. We'll see what happens in 3 years. If my STi is reliable I will probably just stick with it.

To clarify...that upcoming AWD option is for the G35 _Sedan_, a totally different car than the coupes being discussed.

The AWD option for the G35 Sedan will be available both in the automatic and newly released _6spd_ manual option as its own stand alone option similar same to the DVD pacakage. It will not be sold as an 'AWD' pacakage. The 6spd being available on the G35 Sedan began in late August.

Go to Edmunds.com or better yet check Infiniti.com.
The _MSRP_ for a base G35 sedan is less than an STi and they come very well apportioned & equipped. The G35 Coupe (which is whats competitive to the STi) in the 6MT pacakge costs only $300 more than an STi.

This is not including _options_ such as the unnecessary and overly expensive NAV unit as well as the 'Aero' pacakage or the upgrade Bose sound system. Same similar to the STi these non standard items can be added by the dealer (aero) and/or fitted with better & cheaper aftermarket items.

The G35 Coupe 6MT is a real contender.
But as I've stated earlier in previous threads the G is a sporty Cole Hahn loafer while the STi is a Nike track shoe. Depending on the roads you travel and the company you keep one or the other is best but you'ld not be inclined to invite both these groups of people to the same party as everyone knows oil & water does not mix.

Is this the same car that will be, or is the US version of the Skyline?

The G35 _is_ a Skyline in the home market.

There is a ton of onfo on this car from previous posts & threads as posted by me alone not to mention _many, many_ others.

Run a search against "G35" and you'll be reading for weeks.

Don't know about that... As of right now, the automatic is the only transmission listed in the G35X specs on Infiniti's website:

www.infiniti.com/G35X

In the future it probably (hopefully) will be offered in a 6 speed.

The 6 spd is a brand new option that was just anounced 3 weeks ago. They didn't start hitting dealers untill now. The AWD sedan option doesn't hit the streets until mid/late October with the 6spd AWD option arriving in either late Q4 or Q1 '04.

With the 6spd now available the G35 Sedan becomes yet another viable contender. The Infiniti GTR (basically a US _real_ Skyline) will be crazy awesome. My STi lease will end just about the time that beast hits our shores.

The final price of the G35X AWD Sedan won't be announced until the beginning of December, as stated on Infiniti's website. So I don't think the AWD Sedan will hit the streets in October...

The GTR will indeed be awesome, but the price may take it out of reach for most of us.

My local dealer informed me that they will be reciving initial stock in October.
Whether it hits in October or December doesn't matter though as the bottom line is it will be here.

The bigger picture is its functionality in the real world, as yet unknown, and the arrival of the GTR.

The up and coming AWD option on the G35 sedan is nothing exciting. It is only a safety feature design to make the car easier to drive in bad weather condition (rain, snow....etc), same idea as the BMW 330ix, 4-matic from Mercedes. Its 4WD system is not tune for performance like what the EVO/STi/GTR have. Basically all it does is slow down the car with extra weight/rotating mess/drivetrain power lost. The current G35 barely have enough power to break traction on dry road (except for high rpm clutch drop, which just about all manual tranny car can do a burn out). To cut it short, the G35 AWD will be a slower, more boring car to drive then the current 2WD G35.

On the other hand, the GTR will be a different story, 400 HP with performance tuned 4WD system. I am just praying for a VQ Twin Turbo please. Nissan god, please hear me out. We American love small displacement turbo motor too, just look at how the STi/EVO is selling. We don't want a big V8, we already have a Corvette for that and you will never beat the price of a Vette. The STi is great, but I definitely need more, please, I am dying here.

Janq,

The functionality of Nissan's ATTESA 4WD system is nothing short of amazing. The car behave just like a RWD car until you need the traction on the front wheel. I like its driving dynamic much more then the system on the STi. But they are designed with different goal in mind, so I am not saying which one is better then the other. Just different.

A bit offtopic, but I wanted to mention a pet peeve that I have. People need to stop saying Skyline if they mean the Skyline GT-R. While it is obvious that a Skyline GT-R is a Skyline, a Skyline is not neccesarily a Skyline GT-R. Past Skylines have been available in various trims, 4-doors non-turbo, non-AWD, etc. So yes, the Infiniti G35 is a REAL Nissan Skyline, but it is not the Skyline GT-R (or just GT-R as magazines have suggested that the new version will drop the Skyline moniker).

Shortened version:
Skyline != Skyline GT-R
Just as
Lancer != Lancer Evolution
and
Impreza != Impreza WRX STi
though the converse of each statement would be correct

Yea, I was just reading the info at the web site and it says that you can even switch it to full 0/100 RWD. It has a snow mode which starts at 50/50 otherwise it is normally 25/75. I'd like some more detailed info on exactly how it works before I decide if I'd like it or not.

The Skyline GT-R will be at least 70 - 80 grand when it gets here. Add AWD and 400 HP to a G35 and you'll be looking at 50 grand at least - When and if these two hit our shores an STi will still have way more bang for the buck.

I catch myself staring in store windows when I drive by all the time...

That's very true...I often go to my driveway just to look at my STi and drool.

BTW, rumor persists that the GT-R will come to our shores as a 350Z TT as well as a Infiniti GT-R (GTR) that will slot _above_ the current G35 Coupe. But then Nissan had announced back in late '98 that the "Skyline" would come to the US as an Infiniti. I've been waiting since then...and though they brought the G35 Coupe which is a 'Skyline', it is not _The Skyline_.

No matter how or under which brand it shows up as, the real Skyline will be strictly for the big ballers & shot callers

Blue04Sti,

The Skyline GTR offer great bang for the buck at a different level. The GTR is a luxury touring coupe with Z06/911 turbo performance with M3/M5 prices.

The WRX STi is an econobox with M3 performance with a Maxima price.

Both are awesome bang for the buck for its own market.
