I'm REAL glad to hear that bud! You've made me laugh out loud more than most and I still owe you a brew or two for your kindness in helping me out with my HVAC color mod. Plz bear in mind I'm not knocking this site - but there are good folks on LOTSA boards, and you're only short-changing those elsewhere that'd enjoy ya as much as I (and many others, I'm sure) do!

Got those points already, and let me be the first to say that the only points I give a crap about are the ones on my license. Dorks.

Wow, amazingly elitist attitude.

And could someone please enlighten me as to what I would loose if I were banned?

If by "elitist attitude" means abiding by the rules YOU agreed to, then yes I am.

geez, i leave for a month and the whole place turns into a rioting anarchy! While I would prefer to have a STi specific forum... the thought of leaving the forum b/c of the changes seems rather silly to me... It'll take a few more minutes to find information and I'll have to change my bookmarks. Fine by me.

as for the comment about why a porsche owner would be rooting through a VW forum... At one point, VW, Audi and Porsche were all owned by the same company (or had some sort of alliance). I don't know the specifics of how they are related today though. Similar to how Honda owners can learn from Acura owners and vice versa.

I might be able to help fill in the blanks on the VW, Audi, Porsche thing.

'AUDI' germinated from the pre-war 'Auto Union' whihc is the basis for its four rings as there wre originally four independent companies in this union providing various specialties who merged to form one. Much the same as how GM came to be when Ransom Olds and the Chevrolet brothers (who BTW were French!) joined forces.

Volkswagen was born from the Nazi state as a direct result of Hitler wanting a means for 'the people' to enjoy and use the mighty and newly developed pre-war Autobahn road system which was at the time the worlds first modern superhighway system. At that time folks got around mostly by foot, horse or bicycle. So Ferdinand Porsche was commissioned to develop a chassis and rolling structure which he based on his own developments and the result became the original Volkswagen (which in German translates to 'Peoples car'). The name itself was in fact selected by Hitlers governors and Hitler himself approved it. The man may die but his legacy lives on in infamy for perpetuity. Anyway, so the war breaks out and Volkswagen which is still a state owned company turns to making troop carriers and light attack vehicles. Porsche who prior to developing cars had been a designer of farm tractors and implements, the same as Lamborghini (!), was again commisioned to develop a 'speciel projekt' in that the German army required a short to medium range recon vehicle that could ford water as well as climb hill & dale without being stopped by underbrush which dotted the then agricultural landscape. It was then that the modern day SUV was born. Ferdinand built up three working mules which offered amongst many incredible innovations for the time a true 4WD system with bothautomatic & manual locking differentials, a water fording system that allowed the intake & exhaust to vent without swamping, an electric starter system that was waterproof, power steering, hydraulic power brakes (drum), and the list goes on. Its been a long time so I forget the name of this exercise but you can find info about on the web if you look hard enough. Only problem for Porsche is that this time the die Fuhrer did not buy off on his design and went with an offerng from the then Daimler Benz which later was most often erroneously referred to as 'Staff Cars' by the Allies. But Benz and their support of the Axis of Evil during the war is a post in and of itself. With the forced labor camps and making money off the backs of Pols, Jews, Czech's and even POW's turned over to them by the Nazi's. BMW was only slightly less agregious in their own human rights violation policies. But I'm wandering from my point...

After the war the German economy was all but crushed. They had spent all they had on the war effort and as such its people, banks and resources were bust. So what did they do? The same thing the equally beaten Japanese did, focus all of their energies on stste reconstruction through redevlopment of industry which at the time was really their only viable resource with agriculture coming up a distant second. Folks like Dailmer-Benz, BMW (which originally was an aircraft parts & engine supplier), Fokker and a host of lesser knowns (i.e. 'Pinzgauer' which is of Austrian descent and the good folks at Heckler & Koch GbH. aka 'H&K').

Post war during the time of global peace, love and economic redevlopment the formerly state owned & managed Volkswagen spun off and became its own corporation which eventually came to be the behemoth it is today, V.A.G. (Volkswagen Automotive Group). In the process during the early '70's VAG began acquiring pieces of Audi via various cooperative development projects which resulted in all manner of quackery from the forgettable but beloved Audi 'Fox', to the quirky late '60's parts hodge podge called the VW 'Thing' which was loosely based on the WWII German military recon car that Porsche had designed prior (you see Hummer & GM are merely copy cats of history past...there are very few original ideas, only Sony like adaptations) to the VW 'Beetle' that the world so loved not to mention the VW 'Squareback' (I forget its model code off hand) and the many other VW variants leading up to the 'Rabbit' which was the precipice of VW taking over the world, literally.

Porsche on the other hand has always been a family owned totalitarian management style tiny custom fabricator, developer, research & design engineering firm that originally put out sprightly little cars that could use less fuel to go from A to B and do so in less time than what was being offered by most others. Also this was a necessity durin post-war times as germany is not known for having a huge pool of fuel in its bosom nor were the roads of the day outside of the 3-10 lane wide in some sections autobahn. Thus a small car is really all one could develop and sell with any kind of effectiveness. Also back in those time 'micro-cars' were the norm again due to a lack of developed access roads and fuel costs.
Through the years of automotive history Porsche has been shafted a number of times on various projects; the WWII 'SUV', the VW coupe, the 914 and the 944 (developed for VW to be sold as an Audi then dropped right when the development had been completed!) and lets not forget the 928 which unfortunately was a decade ahead of its time.

Porsche and VAG have worked together on projects of varying scope & size for decades as without Porsche there quite possibly would have never been a VW. Or at least not the VW we know and love to this day.

Wow Janq, you do have some patience and time on your hands don't ya? Great history lesson, although I knew the correlation of AUDI/PORSCHE/VW long before I posted what I did in response to 1FASTMF(German cars were my first love); I really didn't want to go off on another tangent. Nowadays, for a Porsche guy to be skimming through a VW forum would most likely be either out of curiosity, just to see what's going on, or just to help out the old school Beetle guys with a Frankenstein Porsche motor swap. Porsche and VW have long since gone their separate ways and have evolved into two very different companies with different ambitions and customer demands, hence, the difficulty in trying to use the the 'Porsche 911 guys in VW forums' analogy. Sorry, guys, for beating this dead horse subject to a pulp. I'll stop rambling now. On a different note, GO STI!

Much less time than you would imagine actually...

I jammed that bit out in about 15 minutes while watching Autoweek on TiVo and waiting for my Mom to call from Dulles letting me know she landed. I then drove her to BWI to retrieve her car.

Anyway some of my posts maybe long but as I've posted before I'm one of the very few folks who took typing in HS (7-9th grade!) and actually learned something. My typing speed is crazy fast. In fact at times I out pace the upload speed of my wireless keyboard so I have to slow down or otherwise it drops characters or the buffer loads up and gets a few seconds behind.

I may post here alot but really I don't spend all that much time with my responses. I just don't have that luxury as a boss, business owner, dad of a precocious 9 mo. infant and husband of a wife & new mom teetering on the edge of sanity.

My friend time at the Janq house is a commodity.

No, ages ago way before I got mine I'd said I might remove my wing. Immediately after getting my STi and driving it for 8 hours straight I came to realize it was entirely livable and streetable, so it remains.
