Thumbs up Turbo back exhaust, a must mod for STi

I just installed a Godspeed downpipe with a Greddy EVO catback on my STi.
I wasn't expecting anything monstrous (HP wise). I knew it would make 20-30hp or so, but I didn't think I would be able to feel an improvement (seat of the pants) from the new exhaust setup.

On my 02 WRX, when I put a turboback exhaust on it I didn't really feel much of a seat of the pants increase in power?
But I had a totally different experience with my STi.

After the install I went for a nice long test drive, and I was very suprized by the seat of the pants feel. The car feels noticeably faster. I was very suprized by how much faster the car feels. The rpms also move up the tach much faster than before. So I'm more than happy with the performance improvement.

As far as noise levels, the exhaust setup is definately louder than stock but not overly loud. The car now has a real mean/bad ass sound to it.

So I would definately recommend the Goodspeed dp/Greddy EVO setup.

Has anyone put on the HKS carbon-Ti exhaust yet? I really like that carbon muffler, and its a lot cheaper than the turbo xs exhaust. Any ideas how much power it would add?

The HKS carbon-ti is just a catback system, so the power gain will be very little. 5-8HP maybe. A catless downpipe is where the power gains are.

just put on a PDE downpipe with a HKS carbon/ti and i am very impressed. The gains are very noticeable, the car revs quicker, pulls harder and sounds really good. It never sounded/felt like this on my WRX. Turbo back is definatly a must do mod on the STI.

Does a turbo back exhaust cause a CEL? I have been toying with the idea for my STi as well.

Have you had a CEL with the PDE downpipe? The PDE downpipe has the long extension for the O2 sensor, right?

Depends on what catless downpipe you purchase. It seems like the downpipe that are CEL free have the O2 sensor relocated away from direct exhaust flow.

The best part about the Godspeed downpipe is that its catless and has a small extention on the side to mount the 02 sensor. That is suppose to prevent a CEL. So far so good for me.

Other downpipes setup such as Turboxs come with a cat. The cat is in the mid pipe section of the exhaust. If you choose to run catless (race pipe mid section) with this exhaust you need to find a way to make the CEL go away. Such as a Pony Express (cel eliminator) - which I've heard don't seem to work that well with the STi.

bert_WRX, do you have the catpipe or the racepipe on your TXS exhaust system?

i see that there quite a few different setups for turbo back exhausts that are available for the sti.

can anyone tell me or point me in the right direction of all the choices we have out there and the pros and cons of each?

so far i have only been able to find solid info on the turboxs one. i don not know too much about the company and the quality of their products though. i guess there are hks and greddy kits available as well. how do they compare? what is hp and torque gain?

this will be my first subaru so i do not know too much yet about which mods and products are good. i have had an eclipse turbo and an s4 in the past so i am a little familiar with turbocharged cars but its been a while since i have learned anything about modding them, especially with modding japanese cars. the tuners for japanese and euro cars seem to be quite different.

i just want to learn more about whats available out there so i can figure out and prepare the mods i want to do to the sti.

performance will be the first priority.

Everyone is going to give you different advise. But to tell you the truth you really can't go wrong with most the products out there. If you have an STi I would recommend Godspeeds downpipe with your choice of catback exhaust. Your choice of catback exhaust will depend on how loud you want your exhaust. I chose the Greddy EVO catback to go with my downpipe because its one of the quietest on the market.
I got my EVO catback from www.subarustore.com
I got my Downpiple from www.godspeedinc.com

But you mentioned Turboxs. They sell a very good product. I had their stage 4 kit on my 02 WRX. You also can't go wrong using them. www.turboxs.com
They can set you up with a stealthback setup (retain your stock muffler - not the best setup for HP) to running their RL-F muffer (very loud - but makes good HP) Their exhaust systems come with a cat mid section or an optional mid section race pipe to go catless. If you choose their race pipe your going to get a CEL.

I wanted to run catless without worrying about getting a CEL. Thats why I chose the Godspeed DP. Running a cat section in your exhaust will cost you a good 6-8 hp or so.

Does anyone have a Blitz NurSpec Catback exhaust? I don't know if you can get them for the STi yet but I'd like to know if anyone has it on their STi. I'd personally like to go with a lot of Blitz stuff.

There is no special model for the STi. It is the same as the regular WRX.

how about a groupbuy for godspeed downpipe

greddy EVO, i like them, [email protected] selling them at 520 shipped

but kinda don't want to get them because the tip is too thin
if u know what i mean, whole thing looks like a replica

the carbon muffler is really nice, but it might hangdown too low and it does sound loud considering its muffler design

what to do......

ok a couple more q's

does a downpipe plus a catback exhaust make it a turbo back exhaust system? what is the layout?

turbo--->downpipe--->cat--->exhaust piping--->muffler---->tip

also how does the godspeed downpipe eliminate the CEL? does it still replace the cat with a straight pipe?

now as far as exhausts, what brands are available to choose from?

HKS
TurboXS
Greddy
Blitz

any others?

sorry for all the q's, hehe, just trying to learn.
