Thumbs down New exhaust hangers...Muffler now going to melt rear bumper???

I might need some kind of heat shield for the bottom of my bumper so my muffler doesn't melt the plastic bumper...any suggestions?

Today I installed some stiff poly-u exhaust hangers, as my 3" turbo back jiggles around too much when I go over bumps. I was able to get two of the 4 hangers swapped, and called that good, as the exhaust barely jiggles at all now.

Only problem is that the exhaust tip is now 3 mm under the rear bumper...I'm not sure how hot it gets, but I'm worried about melting the plastic bumper...it used to sit almost an inch under the bumper.

Do I need to be concerned about melting the bumper?

Thanks.

Define "already" (2 weeks, 2 months, etc)

I might be going back to stock hangers until I can find a good heat-shielding solution for that underside of the bumper...

Leave it! Talk about JDM style. Great look. Or rivet a sheet of alum right there, that looks great too with soot ya know. No I'm not kidding.

Well You might want to take a look at Motorcycle heat shields. I never had any on my bike, but from what I could tell, all they are are like a curved piece of metal (sort of wrapped partly around the actual pipe) - with a slight air gap between the shield and the pipe (I guess the gap acts like a barrier and allows cooler air to flow under it).
You might just want to get a piece of steel tubing with a little bit larger diameter than the tip (say like 3-1/8" or so) and then cut it in half - lengthen-wise, and have someone weld it to the main tip. Make sure to have them offset it atleast 1/16 from the main tip so the air gap remains.

Maybe all that sounds a little too complex, and you could maybe just buy a motorcycle heat sheild and use that instead if your really concerned about it.

What kinds of heat shield ideas can I do to keep the stiff hangers yet protect that 4x6 inch patch of my rear bumper from melting?

Thanks!
i'm pretty sure Accurit can get you that little metal piece that attaches to your bumper right above the exhaust if you remember the pic.

Not sure if it's still there, but I saw a bumper protector on ebay last night. Looked pretty good and it might have been an STi product....

Guys, I checked again. It's not 3 mm of space, its 1 mm, maybe 1.5 at most. Basically, the bumper and top of the exhaust are nearly kissing...

I don't want some metal shield on it. I'm thinking some kind of dark, inconspicous sheet maybe 3 x 5 inches to protect that part of the bumper. Almost like a small sheet of sandpaper, but something that resists and insulates against high temps. Even better if I can paint it red like the color of my car so its unnoticable...

Sorry big dog, not gonna work. YOur just gonna melt that onto the bumper. Your only choice is longer hangers.

I know there is an acceptable solution somewhere out there...I might just have to get creative and solve it myself like I solved my Scooby rattles (10w7 power) this past weekend.

Also,

Does anyone in FFI care whether or not you melt your bumper with your aftermarket engine?

I think not.

Cool

heya,

I had a similar problem and my bumper was toasted.. had it repainted once already and its all burnt up again!. Finally I got the exhaust lowered so now its about 2cm below the bumper and no burning yet. Id recommend fixing it right away or get a head sheild fabbed up. Your bumper will burn fast!

Cool, thanks for the info. I decided to to have the exhaust hanger supports rewelded for the poly-u hangers.

In the meantime, it's back to stock...who cares if my exhaust jiggles left and right every time I go over a rough spot in the road...

Have you already tried using zip-ties to pinch the middle of the hangers in? This will firm it up a little. Nice temporary fix...

That is exactly the kind of idea I'm looking for. I love creative, free mods/improvements I'll try it tomorrow.

Sorry annointed, I don't have a link to the bumper protector on ebay and I also can't find it. Good luck with whatever you end up doing!
