It's a type 26 core, the turbo is a gtx3582r with a .82 tial v band turbine housing.
20gpm pump and reservoir in the trunk, 3/4" lines. GM iat sensor.

How does that AWIC core handle IAT's with that size turbo? Curious because I want a gtx3576r someday and your turbo puts out a bit more.

That core works great, it has less insq than larger cores but since it's a "barrel" style air hits the whole 12". And it's one of the largest cores that will fit in that location without custom fab piping or endtanks. I'll post some more pics up here in a minute.

ETS expansion tank relocation bracket.


My IAT sensor is located in the top of this picture, half wrapped in silicone.


Here's a pic of where my fuel stuff is located and one of my meth nozzles, the other one is by the clutch slave cylinder.


I tried to get a pic of my intercooler mounting "bracket" but it's just a piece of barstock that I bent and drilled holes in, bolts to the back of the ic and the bottom of the pitchstop.

I'm going to reclock the turbo to point at the driver's side, I just need a couple 45* bending reducers 3"-2.5" and 3.5"-3".

Ahhh... so that's why you didn't go with the Type 13 or 14 core? I've eyeballed the Type 26 but wasn't really sure how it would fit, and the 13 & 14 seemed to be more of a TMIC'ish shape which I thought would be a benefit fitment-wise. Plus the Type 26 is a good $150 more expensive, but it says on frozenboost that it is good for 1200cfm/1200hp vs the Type 13 (450cfm/350hp) and the Type 14 (700cfm/600hp). So it looks like the Type 26 does a bit better job cooling the air - as you mention - probably because air hits the entire core as opposed to the "L" shape of the Type 13 & 14 where it may not hit all the fins.

I was wondering if you clocked your turbo like that for any specific reason. It seems you could eliminate a few inches of pipe by clocking it towards the drivers side as you mention.

I really like this setup. I think on my first post of my build I started in 2012 I stated I wanted to eventually go AWIC and I still haven't lost interest.

I clocked it like that because I had silicone that worked, just haven't bothered to change it. I want to change it again because I think I can squeeze the Crawford v1 aos back into the tmic position.

I see the type 26 works and is 1200 cfm. I see the type 15 also and wonder if it would fit too.

Take a tape measure and see, it'll require some fairly serious fabbing to get it to fit in the tmic position

lol once you get everything back in there you'll see it wont fit unless you're going full racecar and modify the firewall.

In other news, I ordered a vibrant cast tight radius aluminum elbow to replace my silicone IAT sensor "housing" and some silicone to reclock my turbo.

Im glad you brought that up. Im thinking with the 2.5 na manifold rotated, and spacers i can move the coolant crosover and put it underneath the manifold.

What would the chance be of mounting a large enough heat exchanger under the oem hood scoop to cool a 35r sized awic? This would solve any problem with restricting air flow to the radiator and having to remove the bumper beam for a front mount heat exchanger. To reduce possible heat soak from dead stops, a fan could be mounted to the heat exchanger pulling in fresh air through the scoop.

The opening is probably too small, would probably negate the main reason to go awic because of heat soak, and i dont see the front mounted heat exchanger causing a radiator airflow problem.

You could remote mount a heat exchanger in the trunk and do some funky airflow mods, but front bumper mount is probably best.

Just my two cents.

Didn't feel like reading through all of the posts, but I'm really looking into awic. My one big concern:my engine tuck. Unfortunately, i haven't seen any clean piping that didn't make it look like a "mess". Frankly, awic isn't a huge thing in the states from what I've seen, and i know no one around me runs it so it's different in that aspect, but i don't want anything extra if i can avoid it. Frozenboost doesn't have any stock looking intercoolers, but are there other companies supplying awic cores?

For useful discussion, not arguing:

Heat soak should only be an issue while sitting still, wouldn't a fan, just like the ones being used behind the heat exchanger when it's mounted on the front, be more than sufficient to draw fresh cool air in through the hood scoop? Of course a seal from IC to hood, similar to oem, would need to be fabricated.

Has anyone considered heat soak of an air2air IC or heat exchanger, sitting still in traffic, so close to hot scorching summer pavement when front mounted in the traditional position? One would assume the air above the hood considerably cooler.

Plus, the oem bumper beam can stay, I would assume it's there for safety reasons, no?

Going to guess the area is just too small, even on my older 05' sti, but some measuring is in store for this weekend.

For some, me included, this will be a daily driver, getting the groceries included, so the trunk will have to stay useful, no swirl pots, water tanks, wiring, big azz woofers, etc. allowed.

I was joking earlier a few posts back about the limited room available to fit the inter cooler itself, let alone a heat exchanger and a fan too on top of the engine.

Personally i feel the only reason to go awic is to put a larger capacity intecooler in the stock location to minimize piping length for boost response.

Compared to a simmilar capacity front mount intercooler the reduction in piping lenth is huge. But a large heat exchanger is still necessary, other than the front mount location, which retains the crash beam BTW, where would you put it.
