Default I raised the question...

Perhaps as far back as 6(?) months ago I suggested that the our STi *could* end up being a 2.5, as it was known that Subaru was working on a 2.5 turbo, and I thought it would make for a perfect *halo* car for SOA. The prediction was not here, however, but over on the Edmunds boards. Most people there thought I was nuts.*

* = most people still think I'm nuts, but that's another story...

I don't know when I did it, but it was pretty early on, and just a feeling really that Subaru would do its utmost to kick the EVO off the map, and the only way to do it would be a 2.5 with our gas and emissions. The input from the Canadians who somehow drove the prototypes sealed it for me--it just had a ring of truth to it, unlike the predictions of "Worm"! Or maybe I just had nostalgia for the 2.5 liter 944 Turbo because of my Porsche background...

Heh, when I bought my car nearly 3 years ago, I told the SOA rep there that I wouldn't buy the turbo unless it was 2.5L... does that count?

I saw that prediction on the edmunds forum, and even saw your reasoning about getting power up on our crappy fuel and keeping emissions...Glad that they brought the 2.5L turbo motor to us...When my 2.5 RS was turbofied it was sickeningly disgustingly awesome....I can only imagine how wonderful the STi is going to be....I can't wait!!!!

Whatever happened to Worm?

Yes, I think the Cannucks were where the 'leak' started.

I had trouble believing they would actually do it, not that it was possible or not possible.

I'm just laughing (and feeling smug) because I got "the scoop" from my dealer in July. He is on the dealer council, and told me that it was going to be a 2.5 and that it would not be a "limited edition". When I posted this in July, most of the scuttlebutt was that of non-belief, so I am enjoying myself now.
He also said that they would be free to "make the market" and allocation would not be based on sold orders.
Let see if the second half of the prediction comes true now.

I knew there was going to be a 2.5ltr turbo Impreza back in 1997....even before the first 2.5ltr Impreza. So Hah! J/K

Exclamation Making a *NEW* prediction!

You heard it here first folks!

I bet the base WRX, at some point, will get a 2.5 turbo. I bet it will be the same (state of tune engine) that the upcoming Legacy GT turbo gets. I bet it happens when the Impreza get redesigned for MY06 or MY07.

With the introduction of the 2.5 turbo STi, it's obvious that SOA will have no problem (IMO) offering WRXs that don't conform to the 2.0 WRC displacement limit. So, a 2.5 WRX, with ~ 250-260 HP seems like the next logical step.

Bob

Well, I decided to check on this claim and found this post, unedited and time-stamped 06-22-2002 04:11 PM EDT:

I declare newrxnj the winner.

newrxnj, your dealer is obviously well-connected and talkative. Please find out from him what's coming soon for the Legacy and Forester.

No problemo...
I will be visiting him shortly to inquire as to a late-year delivery of an STi.
Or will it be the uber-Legacy to follow?...Decisions, decisions.
I will be sure to post his thoughts on Sti pricing and availability. Very bankable so far.

Actually I thought the first 2.5 mention was long before July.

The New Jersey poster who claimed all sorts of crazyness that has mostly come true. He said a 2.5 liter wrx was running around and everyone laughed. I think his wifes sister was married to blah blah blah.

I'll look for the thread.

I believe you're remembering this April thread and Legpuller's posts within it:

http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show...hreadid=168871

As you can see, he was talking about a 2.2L something-or-other. He disappeared after that thread until two days ago, when he began posting in the Off Topic forum.

Sorry, no cigar.

I told subaru to come out with this 2.5 turbo in 1983. I guess it only took them 20 years.

I WIN.
