227 hp x 1.25 = 284 hp !
Is the new sti hp under rated or is it making very slightly more hp to cu inch than our current wrx's? We wont know until someone dynos one or gets some results from the track.

I dont understand your point. We all know that the US WRX is not anywhere close to being tuned to the limits, and with the new 2.5 its the same. However the new STI has additional features like variable valve timing among others.
What Im trying to say is that the new STI and the current US WRX are stressed by about the same amount, most likely even less on the STI. I have no doubt with minor tuning and bolt ons you could get 400hp from the 2.5 . Think about it this way, subaru could EASILY up the HP on the current WRX just adding the features other parts of the world get, twin scroll or valve timing for example. This will probably happen in a couple years to "refresh" the wrx lineup. |

My point is
My point is that the actual hp could be significantly higher than 300 or they might have said lets give the "american drag racers" what they want, more cubes like the old GTO's and 442"s of the late 60's. Is the 2.5 going to any other market than the US? I can see the pro's and con's just wanted to see what others thought. Time will tell.

It gets progressively harder to maintain the same HP/Liter at higher displacements. It's a big accomplishment to have the same HP/Liter having gone up in displacement 25%.

yeah and boost is higher too
Yeah - it must be more than 300hp!
Behold: WRX= 227hp, 2.0L, 13.5psi boost STi= 300hp, 2.5L, and 17.5psi boost % difference HP = + 27% CC= +25% boost = +29% So an engine with 25% more displacement and 29% more boost only makes 27% more power at the same 6000 rpm?! I agree totally, this engine is definitely underrated! Somebody feel like cranking out the numbers here: Click here |

Wrx owners have obviously never tuned a RS-t.Once you get to a certain point with the turbo you have you can throw more boost at it all day long and make no more horsepower,But torque on the other hand jumps incredibly,Hence 300 ftlbs of torque.

Sounds like to me there is other issues than the motor if you hit a HP celing. Like the turbo is way out of its efficent CFM range, injectors are maxed, major intake restriction, IC ineffective at those flows/temps, exaust is too small, etc, etc, etc.

I think that is actually a 32% hp increase-- and a 38% torque increase. Sounds pretty good to me, but it is probably still undertuned. While I don't plan to modify the engine any, it is certainly a good thing for longevity to be making this much power without maxing out the potential (although XT6Wagon's point is interesting.) I think it must have been fun for the Subaru engineers to get it to 300/300 and stop, reaching a nice milestone with room to spare :-).

2002 sti = 276hp
276 x 1.25 = 345 or if we assume that the 2004 sti is at 17.5 psi and our cars gain appox 10 hp per 1 psi increase; 227 x 1.25 = 284 + 40 = 324 True hp is probably between 324 and 345. 300 hp at 17.5 psi doesn't make sense. Bob |

Where'd you get the 17.5 psi figure, didn't think they released it's boost #'s yet.

Bobster, can I beat you with a stick? Please? I mean really you do deserve it bringing out the stupid and useless 1psi = 10HP. Thats THE most inaccurate "rule of thumb" ever created. One car I know of makes around 1HP per PSI, and more than a few others top 20HP per psi.

1 + 20 = 21 divided by 2 = 10.5
hmmm I think 1 psi = 10 hp is a pretty good average. Of course it's not accurate... even a dyno is not accurate. But really ... what's the word... WHATEVER |

Agreed
Especially with the octane available in the US. Detonation is bad...

this concept is totally retarded. it reminds me of civic owners who say they make more hp/litre than big blocks.
