Default Competition Clutch Twin Disc - Subaru

I took advantage of an opportunity to install Competition Clutch's new product and here is my story!

http://www.maperformance.com/competi...-capacity.html

Firstly, Dan Carey is the man and he has some of the best communication in the industry. Definitely helped my first experience with a new Vendor to be as smooth as possible. I'm sure that my future purchases will be handled with just as much great care and comprehensiveness.

Alright, the clutch.

This thing is so tiny. I can see why even at only 10% weight savings, the response is still so good. All of the mass/inertia is right where it should be. The fit and finish of production was spot on. Beautiful machining, and the release bearing was no different. I installed this on my 2004 WRX with STi shortblock and a few goodies, so I had to convert the clutch from a standard pull type to the NORMAL push type that most of the industry uses. I also took this opportunity to replace the rubber clutch line, along with the fluid damper/fixed orifice in the slave cylinder. Being that I have 6+ years of experience working on cars, the installation was a cake walk for me (after I stopped losing tools) and it was done in less than a day.

Initial driving impressions kinda scared me. It grabs like nothing I've ever felt. I had never driven a multi-plate clutch and this experience was completely new to me. I am now a believer and will support them forever. This clutch is far superior (IN MY OPINION) to the Exedy Hyper Single clutch for 2 main reasons: 1*** It has a more broad and forgiving window that you can actually slip and allow it to engage how you want it to. The Exedy was a light switch. This COULD be due to the change in the engagement system that I made (Goodridge line and fluid damper/orifice) but I doubt it. 2*** The quickness in disengagement (Pushing the pedal to floor and clutch releasing the discs) is much faster. Gear changes are significantly faster compared to the ACT 6-puck that I raced with last year. I have not yet had an opportunity to race the car yet as I will not be driving it until August, but I will then add my drag strip impression as well.

Pedal feel is almost on par with the ACT HD 6-puck and high performance pressure plate. The amount of pedal effort is not any more or less, it is simply different. The most resistance felt (pedal feel) is just in a different place in the stroke from top to bottom.

As to be expected from this type of clutch material, there is some slippage while the clutch it cold. IT IS EXTREMELY MINIMAL. I did not experience a complete lack of acceleration as some have reported. Then again, I only make 350whp and 400wtq. I'm sure this may be different with high output engine.
HOWEVER, I see this as a benefit with the car. It gives me a few (3-4) starts from a stop to remember that this thing IS going to fight me a little bit. That being said, I would NOT go from a factory clutch to this and expect to not need a few days to relearn how to drive a stick. I am not scared of hills, nor will I purposefully avoid drainage ditches for fear of stalling, but I am more aware of it. Metallic clutches are not as forgiving to high slippage situations as an organic clutch, so you must drive accordingly or you can really tear up a disc/pressure plate/flywheel.

Is this clutch a daily driver? Obviously my opinion is different from what yours will be. I would NOT drive this thing in rush hour traffic. I am a slightly muscular person, and my legs have had a decent amount of martial arts training. I would still not like shin splints from 45+ minutes on the stopped highway. Speaking of highway, this thing behaves like a factory clutch when driving normally at 65+. Obviously lifting your foot immediately with the RPM and engine speed not matched will create a bit of a "slam", but it will not shove your foot off if you forget what you're driving because you're on a long road trip. Again, if you want a quick downshift into 3rd/4th to get into boost and play with that Mustang, you can and the clutch instantly reminds you why you bought it, it dis/reengages FAST.

I will be replacing my OEM USDM WRX 5 speed with an STi trans and hopefully entire drivetrain ASAP. I will say that launching with a factory 5 speed and this clutch at my current power levels is NOT a good idea. Trust me. However, a roll on power pull or a slightly rough clutch drop going from 2-3 isn't going to kill the trans. Obviously use your own discretion.....

I RECOMMEND this clutch to ANYONE who is struggling with a Stage 2-3 clutch. If you have a 6 puck in good working condition, chances are your power demands are being met. However, this has a HUGE torque capacity of 700+. I'm sure Dan will post a thread in the coming months with a certain STi testing the limits of this clutch. For someone looking for a guaranteed capable clutch for Stage 2+ STi on the track, or a mid 400-500 HP car and you're scared of a step up to a twin disc, DON'T BE. Bypass the 6-puck and buy this. The engagement is nicer (IMO) and I think the room to grow is my main reason for choosing it. I want 550 WHP as soon as I get a real job after my B.S. degree is in my hand.

Thank you again to [email protected] <----- See what I did there?
Thank you again to http://www.competitionclutch.com/ for this opportunity.

Keep Calm and Chive On Subaru lovers!!!

Thanks for the writeup. We need more high capacity twins available. My exedy wouldn't hold at all after only a few low 11 second passes. I've moved on to a 6 puck but the twin was easier to drive.

Any more updates, weez? I'm a little concerned there's *too* much holding power here = broken transmission bits!

Welp, I definitely busted 1st gear. However, this was at no fault of the transmission.

I launched at 6,500 RPM while building nearly 10psi. When I say launch, I mean I DUMPED the pedal.

So about a year and a few months have passed for you on this clutch, have you any more input?

I'd like to get a twin-disc in the new build before hitting the dyno and pushing 30psi... this Southbend Stage 3 clutch won't hold it.

I am putting together an EFR 7670 setup right now. I'll be using a 2.35L and hoping for 550whp.

I will have the car completed and running before the end of spring.

Other than the previous remarks, nothing has changed. Really stiff pedal in comparison to my 1998 Outback. Girlfriend couldn't drive it. That's for sure. LOL.

I'll also be converting to the STi slave cylinder/throw out bearing. I'm actually quite excited to see how the feel changes as compared to the traditional clutch fork and external slave cylinder.

We have this clutch in a rally car.
Pedal feels really light, very easy to manouver.

After 1000 SS km-s I took it apart and there is some wear, but not too bad.

Stupid thing is that you can not order throw out bearing separately. And it's toased. You have to order whole fork etc assembly(~700 $).
