mods: t3 garret 60 turbo with audi s3 external wastegate mated to custom 2.25 headers manual boost controler and bov. spider intake, ported and polished with heads. stage 3 delta cams. fifth injector on pressure switch for above 13psi, only going to run to 15psi. lookin for medium-large intercooler options. front mount type.

problems: new engine not in car yet. stock ecu doesn't like the huge cams. oh and the added fuel and boost lol. so gotta tear it down and put stock cams in untill i can afford MEGASQUIRT. i plan on oil cooler and 2row with dual fans to combat the heat.

any ideas of how much power this could push at the wheels?
id like to see at least 180hp but i hear alot of skepticism about the heads and heating issues .
That is one good looking engine! I am going to have an engine teardown party in APR '09, well, not a total teardown. My engine is having some issues, but I think it is just ticked at me because I am halfway around the world......LOL. But I have some ideas that I would like to implement with my engine to increase it's longevity and hopefully increase the "Fun Factor" a little.

The engine still lives today with approximately 50,000 miles on it since that dyno day. Total mileage on the engine is around 220,000 miles. Its also seen 2 road course events as well, about 250 total miles on road course at fill tilt.

ZERO headgasket issues.
thats because you know what you are doing and didnt cheap out on anything. i would love to have you build my next ea82t.

Its really not that hard to do with you have some sort of fuel/ignition tuning. That and a good intercooler, a way to keep the engine temp down would make a nice livable 82t. Its going to take money to do anything more than what Will did. Its just a matter of is it worth it? EJs are getting cheaper by the day, and the swap isn't that hard at all. Doesn't seem to make much sense to build one, unless you've got something to prove.

whats wrong with having something to prove?

i mainly want to build one because i actuially like the ea82t, but also because so many have told me that it cant be done or that i shojuld just do a swap, ect...

when i run out of ea8t parts, ill move on, but i have a lot of crap laying around and need to use it up before i get any more stuff.

true, but it would have cost anyone else a bit of $ to get what you were able to make or get for free.

either way, you also know what you are doing, which goes a long way towards success.

So even at MAX spending we're talking right at $2,000. The results are DOUBLE the stock power and a little more than double on the TQ. As long as the engine wasnt hacked together and/or abused, it'll last.

I spent less than 1/2 that on the 165/225 setup i had.

Later on when I went TD04L-13G with the MqgaSquirt, Water injection and other stuff, I sank about $6,000 into it and it never ran right. The ONE time I got it to run good (the MS sync'd with the engine randomly correct for once!) it kept up with a stage 2 WRX until 100mph.

After that I ran it at Commerce (1/4mile NHRA strip) to 3 astonishing runs in the 19's with 70~75mph trap speeds.

This same car back on the stock turbo, NO intercooler, NO exhaust work, NO intake work and a MBC set to 18psi ran 16.2's all day at like 80something MPH. AND on the stock ECU.

The cheap setup (165/225) kept up with stock STi's which are faster than stage 2 WRXs. Its too bad I never ran it at the strip.
thanks for the info, i will definatly make sure that i put the time and effort into building mine properly.

what did you do for the cooling system to prevent over heating with the higher boost? and i guess i should ask how you got around the boost fuel cut.

I found out that the reason mine popped was a line came off my waste gate and it hit 26psi but only the head gaskets where damaged everything else looked new when I pulled it apart. and WJM I surprised to here you where only running 16.2 with the boost at 18 I ran 15.1 @ 16psi all stock and 14.3 @ 100 with 19psi with exhaust

Default MPFI ea82t fuel pressure boost.

First off, you'll want to upgrade to injectors for a Nissan 280ZX turbo since they are direct bolt in but are 100cc more then stock (185cc vs 285cc). Then add a fuel management setup like MegaSquirt or something similar that can be tuned. Throw in an upgraded fuel pump and fuel pressure regulator and voila, fuel system done. Next is keeping it cool. I thought about putting a small heater core inbetween the coolant outlet on the turbo and the inlet on the head but also had some ideas of just replumbing the coolant return all together but to where I don't know yet. Dual electric fans and a new 2 core radiator will also help in keeping it cool

You'll run into the risk of blowing headgaskets with lots of boost or blowing the ring lands off the pistons. Headgaskets can be helped by getting new OEM headbolts and torquing them a little more then stock. I torqued mine to 75 ft-lbs compared to 47 ft-lbs. Pistons will have to be made to help them from blowing apart, no way around that (unless you keep the boost down). Stock tranny will hold a bit of power so don't worry too much about it.

My setup I had (before I blew my third engine) was an SPFI shortblock, rebuilt gen 2 turbo heads, modified header for the TD04, obviously the TD04 turbo, AEM cold air intake, WRX top mount intercooler with Samco hoses, naturally aspirated XT spider intake with Nissan 280ZX turbo injectors and an adjustable fuel pressure regulator at 40psi, Delta 260 street cams, Turbo XS BOV, Megan Racing 3" bellmouth downpipe, and a stage 2 clutch to hold the power, GReddy Profec 2 B-Spec electronic boost controller, GReddy Auto Turbo Timer, RX gearbox, rear LSD and a complete 5-lug conversion. This was all in my '89 RX. Its gone except for the tranny and 5-lug which is now in my SPFI coupe... Here are some pics of the build until I stripped it and sent to back to the junkyard...

I saw here you said you ran 40psi for your SPFI fuel system. I was wondering if I should run higher or lower for my MPFI system? Also, can anyone tell me what the factory fuel pressure is?

Sirius, you'll have a lot more luck over on the USMB. Most FI systems run 43 psi fuel pressure. That's the pressure most fuel injectors are rated at, anyway.

Do you have a FSM set for your vehicle?

Subaru Stars EA82T fuel pressure

Yeah I have a set of shop manuals for it. Looks like its supposed to have around 40 to 42 psi. However if I'm doubling the flow of my injectors with the 280zx injectors, I wondered if i should have a higher pressure pump too.

A higher FLOWING pump, yes. I would let an adjustable rising rate fuel pressure regulator do the work of upping the pressure on an EA82T.
