Default Failed inspection. AP or recent battery change?

Hi,

I changed the car battery in Oct and drove a little over 500 miles since. Today I took care into inspection and it failed.

Monitor Catalyst, Monitor Evap and Monitor O2 not ready.

I have a Cobb AP with Maperformance tune. Do you guys have to put the tune back to stock prior to inspection every year? I live in NYS.

Thanks

For my old 06 wrx i had a custom stg 2 tune with a high-flow cat and passed inspections (in canada) all the time -- never had to revert to stock. Sounds like your tune needs to be looked at if you're getting a series of issues.

Did you change your tune? If you replaced your battery in October your monitors should have set by now unless you don't drive it at all.

You need to follow a sequence. Start it up cold, let it idle for 5 minutes, drive it all around your town for 20 minutes trying to maintain 55 at certain points for as long as possible. Do not accelerate fast or brake fast. Drive it like a boring person running errands and the monitors will set. I just went through this last year, very memorable. My smog guy got sick of checking if the monitors were ready so I plunked down $20 and bought an OBD reader to check myself.

I drove like 500+ miles since but didn’t do any of the drive cycle steps. I just put the stock tune back in so lets see how it is. I only drive during the weekends.

So did you pass with tune or u had to go back to stock? For all I know it could be the battery but since i don’t drive much I mind as well start the drive cycle back from stock.

Kept the same Maperformance 93 OCT stage 1 map.

You can check monitor readiness status on your own before going for the inspection; just use a cheap Bluetooth OBD2 scanner/reader paired up to an Android phone/tablet running the "Torque" app (among others).
That's what I usually do to avoid surprises.

My Accesspoint has the feature to monitor readiness.

It just took longer than I thought it would, I put like 500 miles on it and no readiness. It was because I was just taking it on the freeway. I’m telling you, drive it in the town then take it down some backroads. Done deal.

Interesting. I did drive plenty of local streets during those 500 miles.

So you kept the Cobb tune in your Accessport and eventually all became ready? I just wanted to know next time if I need to flash it back to stock or not. At the moment I flashed it back to stock because I know stock it will work but will take a while.

In California it’s every two, it is a pain, fun at first but the novelty of a modified car has worn off on me

I got rid of everyanything that would cause a visual inspection failure:
- aftermarket downpipe
- aftermarket air/oil separator (of all things !)

Kept everything else: large aftermarket TMIC, VF43 turbo, 3-port EBCS, secondary air pump and valves bolted on (but disabled ), aftermarket catback and a custom tune.

I have successfully passed smog 4 times starting in 2012 without doing any extra work.
The car is still fast enough with the stock downpipe; spool is just slower.
But who cares at this point?

It's been almost 1 month. Drove probably close to 600 miles now. I still have two things not ready (Evaporative and Oxygen sensor). Any tips?

I've driven like grandma on highway (trying to stay under 55 or 60), rev it up, driven long trips of 65 miles and 120 miles, short trips of 5 to 10 miles. Seems like whatever I do doesn't make much difference. My inspection just expired since it's Jan 1st now. This is frustrating.

Take it to a mechanic, they can turn on the sensors manually when doing a diagnostic.

My brother has a same year WRX as me. He ran into the same situation and took him almost 1000 miles to get it down to the Evap not ready. In NY you can pass inspection with 1 not ready. What's funny is my cousin has a Lexus that he replaced battery recently and took him a couple short trips and got everything ready. He probably drove a total of 30 miles.

I am glad after 900 miles the oxygen sensor is ready. The only one left is Evap but good enough to pass NYS inspection. I found out my brother's Wrx has been 10,000 miles and his Evap is not ready. Is this normal?

Now my question is do I want to tune again to stage 1 and start this drive cycle again. I do have 12 months to do it this time. LOL

Not typical, but depending on his driving habits and environmental influences, it could be perfectly normal.

On newer cars, the evap test runs a couple hours after you shut the vehicle off, if ambient and coolant temps are between X and Y degrees, fuel level between specified points, etc. If you keep the tank topped off or run on E all the time, or if ambient temps are too high/low, it's entirely possible that it'll never run an evap test.

I had to replace the battery once and that screwed up my smog check. I had to do that crazy drive sequence in the middle of the night on the freeway. I was just hoping a cop wasn’t gonna pull me over thinking I was drunk or something.
After that though, I passed the smog check
