Well, that would be the A/C compressor, so try removing the A/C belt and see if the noise goes away. If it does, you've just found the culprit.

I know some belts when new can cause a different pitch or noise because they are new. If it only started after you replaced your belts. Or like stated before a bearing could be going out.

Take the AC belt off and see if the whine goes away. It sounds like it is the bearings in the AC idler pulley are going bad. Common and cheap and easy to replace. |

I wanted to report my experience with this. About a week ago a whine started up suddenly and remained, but everything else ran fine otherwise.
It was the AC pulley bearing. My cousin and I took the front belt off first. I started it and the whine continued, but it was still difficult to determine whether or not it was the pulley or something up higher. Since he lives near an auto parts store we took a chance and just went and bought a new pulley bearing and popped it on there. No more whine. It's an 2002 WRX, so it had been on there a long time. |

i'm betting on AC compressor clutch
one thing you try, if it's above 32F outside, is putting the AC on and off to see if it's changing the sound.. it won't work below 30F i think as the compressor has a sensor to stop it from working when it'S cold so it won't get damaged.. also, put a LONG flat head screw driver on the compressor and put your ear on the other end, do it on the altenator as well and other things you can think of.. it will help pinpoint the source instead of just having a hunch on where the problem is. EDIT: BE CAREFUL WHERE YOU PUT THAT SCREWDRIVER SO YOU WON'T GET HURT.. |

Bumping an old thread, I know, but I just noticed this same sound on my WRC. It's a 2023 with only 24k miles, so it would be pretty surprising if it was a belt going already. I'll check this out, but any other suggestions?

Pics or it didn't happen. I am curious about that body style, and WRC cars for the street by then too. This could be cool!

I know this was nearly ten years ago, however it sounds like I am now having the same issue you described in this post...Any advice on what you found out with the whining? Mine seems to be related to the powersteering as well and gets louder while revving... Any advice would be a huge help. Thanks, Kyle |

My 09 wrx makes the same whine as the dog box shown in the first video:/ can’t pinpoint where it’s coming from exactly

That's belt/ pulley related for sure. Are your belts too tight? You should be able to twist the belt 1/4 turn (or 90 degrees) in the middle.

Most have no clue on what you mean.
I usually only use chalk to seat large carbon brushes. For others......talc powder, chalk powder or stick, get it on the ribs of the belt. It is sorta a lube. With the engine running, apply talc/chalk and see if the sound changes. Yes, belt issue. Could be old, misaligned, loose. Nope, bearing or something else issue. [kick g sorta old school for chalk] |

I mean... it could be the AC compressor. But they have a low/high pressure cut off. IT is a pump though, and when a pump whines.. .it sounds like that too.

2015 WRX whining noise
Greetings 2015+ WRX owners,
I purchased my WRX brand new in 2015 and I started hearing this irritating whining noise when I start the engine a few weeks ago. My work is like 4-5 miles away and before turning off the engine, noise is still there. Car has only 35,000 miles. Please advise if this could be alternator? or something else? I am new to this. Thank you for your time . :-) |

I have a whine in my car as well, sounds like it is coming from behind the dash/under the gear shift stick. Happens in all gears, all times, even when coasting to a stop.
I think it is one of the bearings on the center differential, not exactly sure of the name but it is a big bearing. That, or the center diff itself. From what I have researched, replacing the center diff is not all that huge of a job, relatively. Maybe check there. |
