Default The 2022 Kia Sportage Will Look Phenomenal

The 2022 Kia Sportage Will Look Phenomenal

At least if Kia's design team follows this blueprint.

Kia has been pushing for domination in the compact SUV market as of late, and with the 2022 Hyundai Tucson already having made its debut, the new Kia Sportage is expected to follow. The Sportage was given a decent facelift for 2020 to keep up with its contemporaries, but according to sources, the new car will be making its debut next year, with North America getting the Korean SUV later in 2021 as a 2022 model year. For those who cannot wait to see what the new car will look like, designer AtchaCars has put together a detailed digital rendering that should give fans a better look at the overall design, with the hopes that the rear product won't stray too far from these imaginings.

2022 Kia Sportage Teased With Radical Exterior And Interior Changes

Kia has dropped three teaser images of the all-new 2022 Kia Sportage that will be revealed in Korea in July.

A smattering of recent spy shots and renderings have revealed that the new Sportage will look unlike any of its predecessors and these teasers confirm this. After the vehicle’s global debut in Korea, Kia will unveil a dedicated European version in September.

The new Sportage features Kia’s Opposites United design language. Found at the front end will be a black grille that’s joined by a set of striking headlights with bold LED daytime running lights that are visible in one of these teaser images. We are also offered a look at the rear-end of the new Sportage, complete with even more intriguing LED taillights than we had expected. Also visible is a strong shoulder line and a subtle roof spoiler.

A single teaser image previews the interior of the new Sportage that includes a single piece of curved glass encompasses the digital instrument cluster and the infotainment display, similar to the all-electric Kia EV6.

“Taking inspiration from an ethos we created where nature meets modernity, the new Sportage challenges design norms with an adventurous yet contemporary exterior and a beautifully detailed and pioneering interior,” senior vice president and head of Kia’s Global Design Center Karim Habib said in a statement. “With new Sportage, we didn’t simply want to take one step forward, but rather move to a completely different level within the SUV class.”

Kia will release more details about the 2022 Sportage in the coming weeks.

Default New Kia Sportage detailed AUS and USA. Updated 6/7/21

New Kia Sportage detailed
Futuristic features for Kia’s new-generation Toyota RAV4 rival, but hybrid powertrain not locked in

UPDATED 06/07/2021 6:00pm: Kia Australia has confirmed three engine options for locally-delivered Sportage SUVs, starting with a carryover 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine (117kW/191Nm) for entry-level models.

Up-spec model-grades will get the same 1.6-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder engine (132kW/265Nm) and 2.0-litre turbo-diesel four-pot engine (137kW/417Nm) as the new Hyundai Tucson.

That means the current 2.4-litre (135kW/237Nm) petrol engine will be dropped when the new-generation Kia Sportage arrives in Australia from around November 2021.

Original article published 06/07/2021 5:30pm: Kia showed us the exterior and interior design of the 2022 Kia Sportage a month ago, and now the South Korean car-maker has filled out all-important details for its next-generation mid-size SUV.

Set to arrive in Australia around November 2021, with prices tipped to rise compared to the current $30,000 to $50,000 range, the new Kia Sportage claims to have class-leading headroom, legroom and luggage space.

Kia says the new Sportage is “ahead of its competitors” in terms of cabin space and technology, the latter headlined by twin 12.0-inch screens that dominate the cabin and cover a large portion of the dashboard.

Other major advances for the Toyota RAV4 and Nissan X-TRAIL competitor include sleeker and simpler climate controls and a circular dial-type gear selector, while top-spec model grades (most likely GT-Line) will offer heated and ventilated front seats and a Harman Kardon sound system.

Wireless phone charging is on offer, while over-the-air software and map updates are part of the package and an E-Handling system with “electric control suspension” is claimed to deliver improved ride and handling “thanks to its continuous damping control in real-time”, according to Kia.

While Australian specs are still to be confirmed, the new Kia Sportage will definitely deliver more interior space, with the vehicle’s overall length extending from 4485mm to 4660mm. Cargo space (with the rear seats upright) rises from 466 litres to 637L.

Based on the brand’s latest ‘N3’ platform architecture, the Sportage’s wheelbase has grown by 85mm to 2755mm – the same as its twin sibling, the Hyundai Tucson, which was recently crowned carsales’ Best Mid-Size SUV 2021.
The extended wheelbase serves to increase legroom in the second row, while more rear seat headroom is reflected by a 15mm increase in overall vehicle height, now at 1660mm height.

The new Sportage is also 10mm wider at 1865mm.
A shorter version of the Kia Sportage is also available overseas, but it’s likely to be offered chiefly in European countries.

More safety systems

As expected, the fifth-generation Kia Sportage will also deliver dozens of new safety systems and driver assistance technologies.
Like the Hyundai Tucson, the new Kia Sportage comes with the latest autonomous emergency braking (AEB) tech that can detect vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians.

Autonomous steering, braking and acceleration can be accessed via systems such as navigation-augmented adaptive cruise control and lane centring assist, while an advanced blind-spot collision avoidance assistance system with camera view in the digital instrument panel is also provided.

Like it’s bigger brother, the Kia Sorento, the new Sportage even has a remote smart parking assist feature, where drivers can use the key fob to remotely control forward and reverse movement without anyone inside the vehicle.
Other new features include matrix LED headlights with auto-dipping high beams. There’s also a rugged X-Line model that features a chunkier exterior design with extra body protection, roof racks and green interior decor. However, it’s not clear if this variant will be offered in Australia.

Powertrain options

For now, Kia’s international info on the new Sportage details two conventional engines: a 1.6-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder (132kW/265Nm), and a new 2.0-litre turbo-diesel four (137kW/416Nm), both of which are already found in the Hyundai Tucson.

The petrol engine combines with a six-speed manual or seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, while the diesel pairs with an eight-speed auto. All Aussie models are expected to be auto-only.

Details of the forthcoming series-parallel and plug-in hybrid powertrains have not been disclosed, but they’re expected to mirror the Tucson’s offerings overseas, which are based around a 1.6-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder engine.

Kia Australia is currently considering its options on the hybrid powertrains, with a spokesperson saying they’re “not completely off the agenda but definitely not confirmed either”.

There are other engines in the mix, too, including a carryover 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine (115kW/192Nm) that connects to a six-speed automatic transmission.

I think KIA decision / choice bring Karim Antoine Habib is paying off big time. Here an article from April this year.

Quote:

Meet the ex-BMW designer shaping Kia's future

An electric car with a tiger face and Porsche-rivalling acceleration is the first new Kia from the brand's new design chief.

Seoul

KARIM Habib speaks English, French, German and Italian fluently, but it's the language of design that keeps him busy. The Lebanese-born car designer has been senior vice-president and head of Kia Design Center since October 2019, and is now based at Kia's global design headquarters in Namyang, South Korea, working alongside thousands of engineers.

A trained mechanical engineer himself, Mr Habib has been working on creating Kia's "design language", shorthand for the way a carmaker's styling efforts are guided by coherent principles, recognisable elements and the myriad things that go into making a new car look distinctive on its own, yet a familiar member of a product family.

On March 30, Kia finally showed off its new design language - dubbed "Opposites United" - by showcasing it in a striking new electric car called the EV6. The bold-looking mid-sized crossover is expected to arrive in Singapore next year, with an estimated price of around S$200,000 at today's Certificate of Entitlement premiums. It's the first of seven new pure-electric cars that the brand will roll out by 2027.

Kia says Opposites United takes inspiration from the contrasts found in nature and humanity. That might sound a bit airy-fairy, but Mr Habib explains that it just means Kia wants its future models to look and drive like cars that people are familiar with, rather than high-tech machines with complicated functions that can intimidate the average folk.

"We want our designs to be human-centred," Mr Habib tells The Business Times in a video interview. His stated mission is to create "original, inventive, and exciting electric vehicles".

Mr Habib certainly knows a thing or two about exciting cars. The 51-year-old Canadian national spent the majority of his career with BMW (his last job there was as its head of design), with brief spells at Mercedes-Benz parent Daimler and Nissan' upscale Infiniti division before he moved to Korea.

He designed the 2008 BMW 7 Series but started out with car interiors, and was responsible for the one in the 2003 BMW 5 Series. Given that career trajectory, there's no surprise that Mr Habib thinks about design from the inside out, and thinks that function should come before form.

"Design is not just about aesthetic styling," he says. "The user experience is important as well, and we want our cars to be able to improve the lives of our customers."

In spite of his past, Mr Habib isn't intent on creating Korea's BMW. He says he would rather have Kia become a leading automotive nameplate in its own right.

"Kia is a mainstream brand, not a premium brand. We're not fighting with the premium carmakers, we have our own market and consumer base," he says. "But that doesn't mean we cannot bring premium design and technologies to them."

It also doesn't mean that Kia cannot build cars that, at least according to the stopwatch, can challenge the best. The range-topping EV6 variant, called the GT, packs in an astonishing 584 horsepower, and can rocket from 0-100km/h in 3.5 seconds. That makes it the fastest Kia production car ever made, and one that's quicker than a Porsche Taycan 4S.

The EV6 is the brand's first model built on a dedicated EV platform, in this case the Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP) that is also used by sister brand Hyundai for its new Ioniq 5 model, and will underpin a swath of new Korean EVs by both brands in the years ahead.

The ongoing switch to electric cars worldwide gives Kia a chance to leapfrog past other mainstream brands, Mr Habib believes. He points out that South Korea is right up there in consumer electronics and pop culture. "Koreans are actually quite progressive and forward-looking," he notes, adding, "There are many things we can learn from their culture, and how they have led the way in the tech world and K-pop."

While trying to reinvent Kia design, however, Mr Habib has one challenge that many chief stylists face: the need to push things forward without losing touch with a brand's lineage.

Till now, the feature that most defined Kia's designs has been the cars' "tiger grille." The shape was developed by Peter Schreyer, Kia's former design chief (now president of design at Hyundai Motor Group) and another designer poached from a luxury brand, in this case Audi.

Mr Habib calls his update the "Digital Tiger Face", which expands the sleek shape across the front end of the EV6 instead of keeping it within the grille.

Ultimately, Mr Habib envisions Kia as a brand that consumers will aspire to own. "Cars are functional consumer products but they are also aspirational, and at the end of the day we want our cars to be able to raise the quality of life for our customers," he says.

"We want our customers to say that, yes, owning this Kia has made my life better." Those are the words he hopes to hear, in whatever language they're spoken.

Meanwhile BMW enthusiasts are cursing Karim Antoine Habib out over at the BMW forums for the huge bunny teeth grills on the 3/4 series.

Kia, Hyundai sure have some strange looking designs. However, I do think that this alien/futuristic design language is working out well for Hyundai/Kia. I am seeing a lot of the Kia K5's, Sorrento, Seltos, newly updated Hyundai Tuscon, etc.

Default 2023 Kia Sportage debuts in US-spec with rugged, new X-Pro model

Quote:

2023 Kia Sportage debuts in US-spec with rugged, new X-Pro model

Kia's all-new Sportage will reach North American trails and roads early next year with the debut of the X-Pro trim level with mild off-road upgrades.

Meet the all-new 2023 Kia Sportage... again.

Okay, so the new Kia Sportage was technically already revealed earlier this year, but that was the global spec. Today, we get the specifics on exactly powertrain and feature configurations will be headed to America and get the details on a new, rugged X-Pro off-road trim level debuting when the 2023 Kia Sportage makes landfall in the first quarter of 2022.

The new design is a blend of sharp angles and organic curves, pulling elements from Kia's new "Opposites United" design ethos which first debuted on the electric EV6 crossover. Up front, the automaker's signature "tiger nose" floats over a massive honeycomb intake, both flanked by the Sportage's bold boomerang daytime running lights. At the rear, notch-shaped tail lights wrap around the corners, connecting to one another via a narrow strip above the automaker's new logo.

The new Sportage is 7.1-inches longer than last year and its wheelbase is 3.4-inches longer; it's now 183.5 inches from bumper-to-bumper with 108.5-inches between the axles. The SUV also grows about a half-inch taller and wider. The extra length frees up more legroom (now 41.3 inches) and stretches the cargo space to 39.6 cubic feet.

"Targeting" 187 horsepower

A 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine lives beneath the hood and is mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission with standard front-wheel drive. All-wheel drive is available as an option for most trim levels and, interestingly, also adds about 1.5-inches of additional ground clearance to the Sportage's ride.

Kia says that it is "targeting" 187 horsepower, which is oddly vague since this is likely the same 2.5L we've already seen in the Sportage's similarly sized platform-mate, the new Hyundai Tucson. Perhaps Kia hasn't finalized the tuning for this application -- the sister companies have been known to tune their shared platforms and tech very differently -- but it's more likely that the final numbers will be identical to the Tucson's 187-hp and 178 pound-feet of torque. Fuel economy also hasn't been finalized, but Kia is hoping for an 8-percent boost over last year, putting the 2023 Sportage somewhere in the 25-28 combined mpg ballpark depending on configuration.

The four-banger is the only powerplant announced for the US-market Sportage, but Kia promises that "information regarding additional powertrain availability will be shared at a later date." Will we see a more potent turbocharged variant, a hybrid version or a plug-in hybrid similar to the Tucson? Time will tell.

The X-Pro and X-Pro Prestige feature rugged looks and off-road tires on 17-inch wheels.

New for this generation are the "trail-ready" X-Pro and X-Pro Prestige models that boost the Sportage's off-road cred a bit with 17-inch matte-black off-road wheels shod with BF Goodrich all-terrain tires. The Sportage X-Pro further visually distinguishes itself with beefier front and rear bumpers, side garnish, glossy black exterior details and roof rails. There are also new multi-terrain drive modes, a heated windshield and washer nozzles and LED fog lights. The X-Pro can also be had with an optional two-tone roof. Meanwhile, the X-Pro Prestige spec further upgrades to LED projector headlamps and ventilated front seats with 8-way power adjustment along for the ride.

Kia will also continue offer the Sportage with its normal trim level structure, ranging from base LX and EX models to sporty SX and SX-Prestige specs. There's also an X-Line model that boasts a more rugged look similar to the X-Pro but with 19-inch wheels and street tires.

Big screen tech

Inside, the Sportage features a curved dual-screen dashboard, linking a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster ahead of the steering wheel with a 12.3-inch infotainment display at center stage. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are standard along with the latest generation of Kia's onboard software. Drivers and passengers are also able to take advantage of Wi-Fi hotspot capability, optional wireless phone charging, and Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant integration. And like most modern cars, there are USB ports all over the place, including a set of ports molded into the back of the front seat headrests along with integrated coat hangers and bag hooks.

The dual, curved 12.3-inch screens are presented on a single panel ahead of the driver.

Every 2023 Sportage comes standard with LED headlamps with high beam assist, lane keeping steering assist, rear park distance warning and forward collision avoidance with pedestrian and cyclist detection. A rear camera is standard, but a 360-degree birds-eye camera system is available as an upgrade. Other driver aid features, including Kia's Blind-Spot View Monitor camera, adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, rear cross traffic alert with brake assist and Junction Turning capability for the forward collision avoidance system come online with various trim levels and packages.

Pricing and trim level breakouts have not yet been announced, but we expect we'll learn more as the 2023 Kia Sportage's Q1 2022 launch window approaches.

Default Rugged off-road Kia Sportage model could make its way to Oz to take on Subaru Foreste

Quote:
The fifth-generation 2021 Kia Sportage that’s just started arriving in Australia made its North American debut this week, with an adventurous new X-Pro model grade designed to offer improved off-roading.

The rugged new Kia Sportage X-Pro models are fitted as standard with all-wheel drive along with 17-inch matte black alloy wheels shod with BF Goodrich all-terrain tyres for improved mud-plugging capabilities.

It comes with a multi-terrain drive system with more modes (Normal, Sport, Smart, Snow), raised roof rack rails and a redesigned lower front bumper with LED fog lights and LED projector headlights.

The intrepid Kia Sportage’s windscreen and washer nozzles are heated as well to ensure improved functionality in cold climates and in the snow.

A Kia Australia spokesperson told carsales there were “no plans” for a special-edition or an X-Pro model at launch, but that the Sportage “has a five-year lifecycle ahead, so possibly [we could introduce it] down the track.”

It’s not clear if Kia would retain the X-Pro or X-Line name for buffed-up Sportage and Sorento models, or whether it would Australianise the sub-brand with something more fitting.

No residual value kills it. They have had compelling designs for the past decade because of Peter Schreyer. Save the Stinger, it has not translated well in the secondary market.

That's evolving. The Telluride is holding decently. The current Sportage is an old design and due for a new model.

I was listening to an audiobook the other day and the narrator called the main character's car a "Spor·taazh". I always pronounce it "spor·tuhj", but then I realized there could also be people out there calling them, "spor·tuh·zhay".

That's the most thought I've ever given to the Sportage.

Default 2023 Kia Sportage Hybrid Debuts With Over 500-Mile Range

Quote:

2023 Kia Sportage Hybrid Debuts With Over 500-Mile Range
by Karl Furlong

It's got class-leading space and great gas mileage.

The new Kia Sportage was revealed in June and it's an altogether bolder product than the model it replaces. Notably, it's Kia's longest-running nameplate and one of the key models that put the Korean automaker on the map. The large trunk, nifty touch controls, and curved dashboard display are some of our favorite features found on the 2023 Kia Sportage. To further bolster the range's appeal, Kia has just debuted the new Sportage Hybrid at the 2021 LA Auto Show. As expected, it offers superb gas mileage. It also has more power than the gas-only 2.5-liter model and is greener than before, with CO2 emissions dropping by 40% compared to the previous model.

Powering the Sportage Hybrid is the combination of a 1.6-liter turbocharged GDI engine and a 44-kW permanent magnet electric motor. Together, the powertrain produces a targeted 226 horsepower, up from the gas-only model's 187 hp. Completing the package is a 1.49 kWh lithium-ion battery and a six-speed automatic transmission.

Being a hybrid, efficiency is paramount. The Sportage Hybrid is up to the challenge and Kia says it can manage up to 39 mpg in front-wheel-drive guise. An all-wheel-drive model is also available but will be a little less efficient. By comparison, the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid AWD returns a similar 41/38/40 mpg city/highway/combined. Sportage Hybrid customers can look forward to a driving range exceeding 500 miles and a towing capacity of 2,000 pounds.

The bold appearance of the new Sportage is one of its traits and the same applies to the hybrid. The distinctive Tiger nose grille and crisp shoulder line are evident, but the hybrid also gets special 17- and 18-inch wheels, along with unique badging. The new Sportage has grown significantly and is now 7.1 inches longer than the outgoing model. This has allowed Kia to free up a generous 41.3 inches of rear legroom and nearly 40 cubic feet of cargo space. The Sportage Hybrid comes in a choice of three trims: LX, EX, and SX-Prestige. The latter two get standard AWD while the LX gets FWD but is available with AWD.

Paddle shifters are standard and there are ECO, Sport, Smart, and Snow driving modes. The cabin is packed with features like wireless Android Auto/Apple CarPlay, a touchpad for the climate and audio controls, rear parking sensors, and driver attention warning. It also gets available Kia Connect services like over-the-air map updates, the first new Kia to get the Kia Connect system. The available dual panoramic curved display with close to 25 inches of screen real estate looks fantastic.

"In addition to paving a new pathway to electrification, the Sportage Hybrid also delivers superb driving dynamics, cutting-edge design, and a vast array of technology for a world-class in-car experience," said Sean Yoon, president and CEO of Kia America.

The Sportage Hybrid arrives early next year but pricing has not yet been announced.

Those specs sound good. 500 mile range is fantastic. Wondering what the range is for the AWD variant.

They made a slightly less efficient Rav4 hybrid clone.... "up to 500 miles of range" is meaningless in a hybrid; were it an EV that statement would hold some value, as the public charging network is fairly sparse at the moment.

For context, 500 miles is ~7.7hrs at an average speed of 65mph, I personally cannot drive for nearly eight hours non-stop on the highway without taking a pee break, and my wife & kids certainly can't either. Gas stations are everywhere, public charging points are not.

A Prius can go ~660 miles in the city or ~600 miles on the highway without refueling, whoop-di-do.

I like Toyota but their dealership network is one of the most unfriendliest, that has just been my personal experience.

Prius is one hideous looking car, if not the ugliest Toyota in their entire line up. Rav4, yeah I don't particularly like the interior or the exterior.

500 miles would be plenty for me, heck I'd settle at 400-450 mile range.

I like this and the new Mazda CX50.

One thing is for sure, Honda and Toyota have some serious competition in this segment.

Default The 2022 Kia Sportage Will Look Phenomenal

One of the things I liked about my Legacy was that I could get 550 miles + on a tank. When I had a long commute, it made a big difference filling up once a week

Default 2023 Kia Sportage Hybrid Is Massive Value For Money

Quote:

The newcomer undercuts rivals almost everywhere.

First seen last year, the Kia Sportage and its Sportage Hybrid sibling are set to take the compact SUV segment by storm. In a category as saturated as this, manufacturers have to pull out all the stops to ensure their entrants are appealing enough. The all-new Sportage has many appealing attributes; not only is it striking to look at but it's produced locally, too.

But handsome looks and all the tech in the world mean nothing if it doesn't offer value for money. We've already gleaned insight into what the Sportage will cost and were left impressed by the competitive pricing. Now, it's the turn of the Hybrid and, again, we're left dazzled by the affordability compared to key rivals.
The entry-level Sportage HEV LX weighs in at just $27,290 for the front-wheel-drive version and $29,090 for the all-paw derivative. The FWD model undercuts key competitors such as the AWD Toyota RAV4 Hybrid LE ($29,075) and front-wheel driven Escape SE Hybrid, at $29,170.

This highlights the Kia's affordability, especially considering it's the latest model in the segment. Interestingly, that old warhorse known as the CR-V Hybrid comes in at $31,610. The mid-range Sportage HEV EX is only available in all-wheel-drive and isn't that much more expensive than the LX. At $30,990, it may just be the sweet spot in the range, with regards to price and standard specification.

The most expensive model, the SE-Prestige, weighs in at $36,190. This is well-priced when you look at the competition; a top-of-the-range RAV4 Hybrid Limited is priced at $37,575 but boasts a flotilla of standard features to justify that price. A range-topping CR-V Hybrid has an MSRP of $37,400. It's clear to see that the Sportage Hybrid represents rather excellent value in its segment. The above prices do not include destination fees ($1,215 for the Sportage models).

Agree. I think the Tucson is gorgeous actually. In fact, if it had tribar instead of twinbar taillights, it would be a much better Mustang-looking rear-end than what Ford actually put on the Mach-E.

Changing brand perception like Kia's takes time. They've had the product for around a decade now as well, but having great styling, good aspirational products (like Stinger, EV6, and Telluride), the much improved logo, etc; they're definitely getting there. We are long past the days of the Sephia.
