It was 18 degrees this morning and my car cranked just fine, as with any other cold morning. But after warming up the engine running a few errands, I ran into the the same dreaded issue.

The last couple days, leaving work, it was stupid cold. 10 the one night, 1 after that. Car churned hard for a sec, but fired right up. Stock 390 battery. Thing starts better at 1 degree than it does at 32 and rain.

Still planning on going to a 640 battery next week anyway. Then I'm getting the extended cranking flash performed as well.

Unhappy

I have the same problem with my 2014 Impreza Sport in Canada. It failed to start my first week with in the summer but I figured it was a fluke. It was fine for a couple more weeks and then I started noticing that it would sometimes crank very slowly and take a long time before starting.

While looking up the issue online I found a forester forum and people have been receiving flash updates to their ECU from their dealers. I decided to bring my vehicle in for service in hopes that would do the trick. My dealer told me there were no ECU updates and instead "re-positioned" the camshaft angle sensor.

The problem persists and Subaru Canada is just horrible to deal with. I love everything else about my car but this is embarrassing in a crowded parking lot in a brand new vehicle.

We've been having really cold weather lately but once it warms up I will bring it again to the dealer.

I feel like this will never get resolved and the dealer will just BS to get more warranty work done on it instead of actually fixing the problem.

anyway, that's my story.

Well, Subaru Canada just got back to me acknowledging the problem and told me that an ECU update should be available in mid-february.

I hope this will fix it once and for all.

My pride that I lost as my car took 10 long seconds to start with my boss in the car today is hopeful that's true...

Default '11 Impreza

Wifes '11 Impreza sedan 4EAT (around 60K Miles) has recently become prone to the hard start and required a second crank of the motor to fire. She just had the OE battery replaced with a duralast gold battery which I have not had issues with in the past. I know she needs a new alternator belt and could probably just use new belts in general. The spark plugs were changed around 40k miles, but I am going to check those this weekend as I would be highly disappointed if those were bad already.

Anything else I should possibly check? I have instructed her this morning to let the gauge cluster sweep before cranking

My feelings is that her FPR (fuel pressure regulator) could be going bad. I had this issue on my STI and dealer replaced FPR. This leads me into my next issue - 2013 STI hatch - either my fuel is gurgling upon being primed, or my hvac recirc valve is actuating. The car has had the dreaded stumble since I bought it and this noise has just recently started this past summer. The FPR was replaced late summer and the gurgle went away. Well now its back, but the car still starts fine. I know the cure is an aftermarket FPR, but that and a tune is out of budget at the moment.

My car has been starting really fast (one turn usually) since I got the oil changed at the dealer... Maybe hard starting issues are partially oil related? Just a suggestion don't bite my head off pls.

Definitely not an oil issue. But happy to hear things are better for you...@charlesbx99 are you suggesting new plugs, or different plugs?

Default hard start problem

I have a 2013 Impreza hatch 2.0i Sport. I have owned the car for 2.5 years and bought it new. This hard start problem started after the first year of ownership with approximately 6,000 miles on the car. I live in a high altitude environment (above 10,000ft) with variable weather and the car is always outside.

It only happens for me in winter though, but not at temperatures that would be considered cold enough to warrant a car to have trouble starting. It seems extremely random. It will start fine at -10 degrees F and then a week later have trouble starting at 35 degrees F. I do notice that it usually happens if I have not driven the car for at least a day, but once when I had just driven to the grocery (only about a mile) and was leaving. Random inclines in the parking area ranging from flat to steep. It has never not started, but when this problem occurs I have to hold the key for up to 10 seconds, sometimes giving it a second try, and when it does start the engine seems jumpy at first as others have mentioned.

When this problem first started, I mentioned it to my dad and on his suggestion I began using the method where I put the key in, wait for the gauges to sweep and then try to start. It doesn't matter if I do this there are still random times when it is hard to start.

Last winter it did it around 4 times and I took it to the dealer. They brushed it off, told me my battery tested dead (on a 1 year old car?), replaced it for free, (even after I explained that this didn't seem like just a battery problem, all the gauges, electronics work and the car was turning over) and sent me on my way. Their jaws dropped when I came back in a week later telling them the car was still having the same issue. I spent 3 hours waiting while they did an extensive review of the car, but they found nothing.

This winter it has had the same problem around 5 times. Not sure if I should go back to the dealer again. I feel better knowing others are having the same issue. And as I mentioned it has never not started so I'm not as worried it will leave me stranded as I used to be. Hoping someone will find a final solution though. But with a new car that has less than 15K it should crank right up. My 12 year old Ford Escape with 250K did until I traded...

Join the club thanksgivingtable! You're not alone, and yours sounds EXACTLY like the problem those of us without real (cam alignment position sensor, bad battery, plugs, etc.) issues have. Those of us with the exact problem you have, don't seem to have any diagnosable problems whatsoever, and it remains a mystery.

Well..... Called my dealer and asked if they had the ECU update that Subaru Canada had promised me. "yes we do!" was their response. Great! Book her in for an appointment. I dropped it off at 7:30am and got a shuttle ride to work. After work I get a ride back to the dealer. "it's not ready yet". What? They had it all day and all it needed was an ECU update. "there's no update so the mechanic is measuring the shim size needed for the sensor".

I was lied to by the dealership after TELLING them that Subaru Canada confirmed they had an update for me and now they're trying to do even more unneeded work on my car. I told them over and over that Subaru Canada checked my VIN and told me I had an update and all I got was denial.

This was the last time I'm ever using this dealership. The problem is, the only other dealer in my region doesn't have much of a better reputation.

I'll let you guys know how it goes with the other guys...

Well I took mine to the dealer a little while back. They found an update and flashed it. The frequency of the problem has decreased but still happens from time to time including this weekend. The guy at the dealership confirmed he knew of this issue but no real fix has been released yet, like everyone else just suggested I wait a few seconds prior turning the key over for the fuel to prime which I do anyhow.

i have joined the oil burning club for over 2 years with my subie...but i guess i have joined the hard starting club too =(...last 5 months over winter i have had a few hard starts.

i always turn my key half way and let the needles sweep and chime to stop before turning over the engine. Never had a problem until the last 5 months (winter). Normally it would fire right up, but a handful of times it would be very hesitant.

Normal: cranks 4-6 times and then fires up to 2-2.5k rpm (quickly)
a few times this past 5 months: cranks 2-8 times and fires up, but the rpm slowly/gradually goes up from 500-2.5k rpm..almost sounding like the engine is about to cut out (especially at the lower rpm during hard start)

the red battery light turns off once the car cranks (so i assume it isn't battery related), however i do notice the red oil pressure light does take 0.5 seconds longer to turn off, which is scary. (again during lower rpm until it hits 1k)

The worst was on Thanksgiving day (11/27/14) when I stopped at a gas station - took three rounds, and each was accompanied by a clunk. Thought I was going to have to call for service or recruit some nearby folks for an assist to push the car back on to level ground (see below).

- The Car: 2013 Subaru Impreza, Premium, CVT, bought February 28, 2013 (replaced my very reliable 2005 Hyundai Elantra hatchback). Mods added after problem started: Hella supertones, fog lights (install not complete yet, still need to do switch and fuse).

- Gas and Maintenance: Gas is typically name brands (Shell, Irving, Mobil, Cumbies) and E10-87 (although, I noticed some Irving pumps are not labeled E10?). Kept up with routine maintenance, with particular attention to fluids, some of which were changed early like the diffs.

- Taken to dealer and reported prior to 36k miles. As such, I expect it to be covered under the original warranty. Have gone in twice, and will be scheduling a third visit very shortly. The first two times, they "flashed" the computer with updates. I was very disappointed that this was all they did the second time. Yes, I pointed out the cam position sensor bulletin. They stated that if I brought it in a third time, they would have to call SOA for what to do next. I am seriously concerned that this is going to ruin other parts of the car. Continued starts like this could ruin more than just the starter - how about the cam that is probably going "clunk"?

- Has occurred in all temperatures, cool and warm engines, and different car positions (level, not level). No check engine light. Most commonly, it's a warm engine, a brief stop (grocery) and a hard restart on unlevel ground. The unlevel ground doesn't have to be extreme either. How do you tow a car out of a parking garage in Boston?

I'm very frustrated. Suggestions are welcome. And NO, parking on level ground all the time is not an acceptable solution. (Amusing, but not acceptable.)

Has anyone else experienced the "clunk" during a hard start?
I definitely get the "clunk" and then nothing. Then I try again and sometimes it will crank a few times and start. Sometimes it will start right up. Sometimes it will crank and crank and crank and clunk again. Mine also started around 35K. This car replaced my incredibly reliable Toyota Matrix, so yeah, it's pissing me off.

Here's an update on my situation:

My dealership FINALLY got the ECU update after bringing it in for the third time. I had it done which took about 2 hours and cost me $100 (car's way out of the bumper-to-bumper warranty at 51k). The Tech there also mentioned that I had some oil on the mass airflow sensor and he cleaned it off for me. In addition to this, I've also replaced the car's battery last week to a Bosch. I literally pulled out of the service drive an hour ago, so fingers crossed this fixes it once and for all for me!

I forgot to mention, the tech recommended I clean out the throttle body to help make this update more "effective".

Is there recall or a bulletin for this? I think my 2013 Limited do this from time to time and I taught it was the weather or that I wasn't waiting a couple of seconds to turn the key again.

Are the dealers aware of this?

There is a TSB out regarding the camshaft position sensors (there are four of these sensors on this car). I guess if the sensors are not aligned correctly, it might cause the engine to start with difficulty. I believe shims are then used to bring the sensor into alignment.

My 2012 Sport Premium does this VERY infrequently (like maybe 2x/year). And then it does start with some additional cranking. I'm not worried about it.

Some are, but most aren't in my experience. It took nearly 6 months for this particular dealership to receive the update, and I've called many others in that time . Also, I just found out the ECU flash is covered under warranty up to 80k miles -- they almost charged me for it.

He wasn't very detailed at all in explaining how it's done step-by-step, he just wanted me to schedule it for service so he could do it for like $200. I just found this DIY video on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SCboJ8B6wRM

No start this morning 2012 sport limited, got 1/2 a crank then the dreaded click click sound. Went with a interstate mega tron II. This has 550 cca as opposed to the subie 390cca. Noticeable more cranking power. Hopefully this battery will last longer then the stock subie battery.

I'm a big fan of the Bosch battery that Pep Boys sells, currently with a 10% discount. That's what I installed last fall, and it was strong all winter with 640 CCA.
