Think it’s brand specific.

Subaru has always been about safety, reliability etc.

Dodge has always been about the hp and cheap financing.

I think they are just catering to their specific market.

Anyone replaced shocks/struts? I have 165k across bumpy windy pennsylvania back roads and I don't feel like I have full steering control over uneven road surface it in the rain for the last 20k. Obviously going to look at tires for wear pattern, etc but didn't know if anyone else had replaced them and if so with what and roughly what that cost you?

I see even like Toyota and VW doing it now on their cheap entry level sedans though. Then again I suppose the target market for cheap little sedans is young people who get their first decent paying job, probably the exact kind of people who want car go fast over anything else.

new OEM is about 1100.00 for the parts alone (every part, not reusing springs or anything). that is actually my plan, probably next summer.

I just replaced all my swaybar endlinks and bushings with new OEM and that made a huge difference. currently at 198k. thankfully most of my roads are quite nice and my shocks actually still do what they are supposed too..

I wanted the extra ground clearance so I swapped my 2015 impreza struts with those from a 2009 forester. It was a straight swap. The older “new” setup has 120k miles on them versus the 80k on the originals. I’ll likely be upgrading to kyb’s down the road with king springs. Here’s the ride now: https://ibb.co/ZYbFPk4

Went from 5.7 inches to 12.4 inches.

um looks like the camber is way off, springs control the ride height.

Looks may be deceiving. Promptly brought to an alignment shop after install. Everything is dialed in.

May consider rear adjustable control arms, better end links, and beefier hardware when I upgrade to the kyb/spring setup.

I went to spray this can of undercoating on my car that I thought was fluid-film like. It was something I grabbed from my late grandpa's stuff after he died a few years ago, he had all kinds of chemicals and stuff. The exposed metal (except the engine and exhaust of course) on the bottom of my car is all now rubberized. Oops.

I don't think it'll be too bad but I'll have to scrape it out of some bolt and screw holes and whatnot when I do service going forward. I could have stopped when I realized it was rubber-like of course but eh...

Unless someone thinks having a rubberized undercoating on most of the exposed metal, including most of the suspension parts, will damage anything?

Edit to add: I just noticed Valvoline CVTF is $42 for a 6 quart pack on amazon. I think that's a really good deal compared to what usually $9-10 a quart? I might pick up a pack or two.

If it wasn’t for you, I don’t think I would’ve actually gotten this far with modding mine out. I remember specifically seeing your taillights and thought, “I need those in my life”

You got rid of yours long ago, right?

That is unfortunate, I would try to get most of it off. It’s known to hold moisture on the metal and cause everything to rust faster.

Castrol oils are on decent sale on Amazon, cheaper than I've seen them anywhere else. I'm set for oil for a couple years at least now.

I'm looking at getting a set of wheels and tires for spring/summer/fall and can't really bring myself to pay $650 for even the cheapest set of new wheels and tires, so I'm looking around craigslist and all that. Would a 205/65/16 tire fit on the 2.0i hatchback or will it rub?

Unsure. Local shop accidently put 205/60/17s on mine instead of 205/50/17 and I rubbed on bumps as I drove home before realizing they were the wrong size.

That’s like 1.25” bigger, which is pretty significant.

You can also run smaller rims too if you don’t have a second set already.

I need to get new tires soon too I have to go slow in the rain.

I'm not sure, I might have a set of 15" rims around the property somewhere and I'm pretty sure it's the right bolt pattern but I'm not 100% sure.

It'd be annoying to have my winter tires be the wider, slightly narrower sidewall wheels though, and then use big, fat, narrow tires in the summer which I think is the opposite of what you want in both situations for optimal performance. I'll keep watching for deals on new wheels/tires though, of course there's plenty of time to wait for a good deal new or used before summer.

Edit to add: does anyone know if a 17x7 wheel with a +38 offset would fit? I know looking at wheels on tire rack and discount tire and all those places they're usually like 45-50 offset. But these wheels are super cheap, not super clean but cheap and functional is more than enough for me.

Changed the spark plugs a couple weeks ago. Was a lot easier now that I know a ratchet combo that worked well on our Forester when I did those. Just pull the battery and air intake, and they're right there.

Anyone know what this plug might be for? It's clearly taped off, but had me curious! It's on the passenger side, behind the air filter assembly.

I believe I have that on my car as well, not sure. Might be for aftermarket fog lamps?

Over on a Crosstrek forum someone had the same question. Sounds like it's for the remote start system. Well that explains things since I don't have that option

Just completed changing my spark plugs on a 2013 Impreza. Took two hours but it was my first time on a boxer engine. The correct tools will make all the difference. 3” wobbble socket extension with the correct spark plug socket. I’m only at 56k and the plugs on the passenger side looked worse. FYI, I haven’t done the recall for the valve springs.

Mine were fine at 105k miles. Might want to get on that recall

Are there any decently heavy duty steel replacement bumpers? Always been curious, and I'm pretty sure the front end parts that aren't suspension are very similar or identical to the crosstrek so that would mean better support I assume? Since there are probably a lot of people with crosstreks who want off road parts.

I’ve seen them but I think they are custom, yes the crosstrek is identical in that regard so might be easier to search crosstrek when looking.
