Question Replace 2017 HK Nav HU with Aftermarket HU + Axxess TYTO-02?

Has anyone utilized the Axxess TYTO-02 interface device to successfully install an aftermarket headunit in a ~2017 WRX or STI that came with the Harmon Kardon navigation unit and factory amp?

I found mention in the thread about upgrading to the newer OEM HU, but I'm interested in going straight to an aftermarket HU without rewiring the speakers, amp, etc. and want to hear from someone who has already done this.

Alternatively, it looks like the (more expensive) iDatalink Maestro RR Interface Module with respective wiring harnesses will do the job, the installation guide even specifically calls out the "Subaru 2017 WRX STi With Harman Kardon".

I used Maestro RR to install after market HU to my 2017 WRX Limited with HK+navigation and retained everything (SWC, BUC, HK audio etc)

Thanks! I'll go that route, then. Can you tell me if it supports the factory microphone, or if I have to replace it with the aftermarket mic? Can't find much about mic support and the Maestro RR, so I assume that means there's no support...

You have to use the mic that will come with after market HU. Factory mic will not work with the after market HU.

Another question for you, did the install impact Starlink functionality? (Lock and unlock, or gps tracking using the mobile app?)

Thanks!

I don’t know the answer to that bc I didn’t subscribe for the Starlink.

Did you retain the stock speakers and amp?

How is the sound?

Do you receive an error messages / notifications in the car from Starlink issues or any other interface issues?

Yes I did. IMHO, it sounds much much better than the stock HU.
I am not sub to Starlink. No answer to that.

Interesting!
That's doesn't sound like a lot of work or cost.
Thanks!

You changed the head unit and added the Maestro RR and that's it?

Is there no amp needed for the door speakers?

I have to increase volume into the 40s to hear everything.

subscribed. I purchased all those items last xmas and never got around to figuring out how to get the mic and backup camera to work. I think I loaded the wrong driver to the MAESTRO unit though. Now that the weather is nice I think I'll give it a go again.

If you have the Harman Kardon Audio system, you don’t need to replace the amp. The Maestro RR will take care all off that. Now, if your car is equipped with the HK system, there’s more to it. You need to remove the starlink system from the stock HU and burry it inside the dash. Something like this.

Yes, I recall that about the Starlink module. Thanks, for the reminder!

Without an extra amp, does the volume still need to be cranked to hear all of the instruments, like with the stock HK everything?

Not mine. I guess it depends if what kind of after market HU you’re putting in. I have the Kenwood DDX9906XR. I really like it and I really recommend it. I actually went to 2 different HU before this one. 1st was the Sony AX500 and Pioneer 4400.

Great info. Thanks!
I guess I could always add an amp later of not satisfied.

Questions about your Kenwood HU...
Do you stream Bluetooth music from your phone?
Android or iPhone?
Does the time for the music track count up, down or show both?

Never used bluetooth. I use wireless Apple CarPlay. Once I starts the car, my iPhone automatically connects to the HU wirelessly.

Wouldn't wireless be Bluetooth?

Does the song time count up or down?

Did the aftermarket HU fix the tweeters in the dash being the loudest / most prevalent speakers?

I'm looking at the DMX907S

FOLKS! IMPORTANT NOTE IF USING MAESTRO+SU2 on aftermarket HU. I have a 2017 STI with HK and Nav and could not figure out why the mic and rear camera would not function. Turns out the instructions are actually incorrect. Mine told me to toss the "A" connector.

The yellow and blue switches must be connected to the provided "A" connector. The "A" connector then clips onto the stock 5 pin that used to go to your stock HU.

That is all. Good luck!
