You should try the rivet fix and see if the noise goes away. Are you having a hard time putting the car into gear?

how would a rivet fix a weld that isnt broken? did you watch the video? zero movement on any of those 6 welds.
not really having any difficulty going into gear under normal circumstances. after very long drives (greater than 2hrs) then it can be a little hard getting into first or reverse from a stop. but that's it. while driving, the gear changes are normal. |

The firewall could be flexing. The spot welds don't have to be broken for that to be happening. When my spot welds broke I tried using self tapping screws and the spot welds stopped moving but the noise was still present

i had been attempting to follow this.
http://www.wrxforums.com/forums/84-d...olt-style.html but after pulling it apart and looking at everything again. i ended up just putting everything back together. for now. I had thought that the welds being referenced in the thread were those labelled "1" and "2", but after closer examination of my car and the pics, the how-to thread is putting bolts through "5" and "6". i pulled the lower part of the dash apart to get a look at the back side of number 5 and 6. and while the clutch was being actuated. no movement from #5 and #6 at all. drilling out 5 and 6 to put bolts through seemed like a huge waste when they arent moving anyway. additionally, i placed my hand on the welds to try to isolate where the noise (vibrations) were coming from. i felt the most vibration from #1. which unfortunately for me, the backside isnt accessible unless I pull the whole dash. guess i'll just have to tough it out until spring. Anyone who's pulled the dash. can you confirm that these are the only 6 welds for this upper bracket? these 6 are the "problem" right? does anyone have any better pics of the bracket with the dash removed? |

gsrcrxsi. i looked at mine over the past summer. i just started getting the squeek. your listed #5 was the only one just starting to crack on my car. i put a sefl tapping screw through the spot weld.it been fine since. i have one of those circuit motorsports brackets wating for warm weather to install. my car is kinda layed up now anyway. im getting a clutch and flywheel installed in the next few weeks.

I was wondering if taking out the dash really saves you more time then not. As I do not have a shop currently to work in and have to resort to doing this in my driveway.

Excellent thread. I've been searching on this issue to see if this was a common issue.
Since my dash is partly out, I will do some work on the area to make sure I don't have issues down the line, especially since the car is gonna spend most of its life on the track! Thanks for the writeup |

Anyone else recently get a letter in the mail from SOA regarding this issue? I've had my car into the dealer a couple times for the squeaky clutch. I'll probably be making an appointment soon to go back with the letter in hand.

I personally have not but would LOVE a copy of that posted if possible. I'll add it to the original post and I'm sure others would love to use it as leverage if they come across the same problem. If you need help covering or photoshopping your name off of it, PM me. I'll delete all the personal info off of it! |

Doubt it. No company ever wants to put out a voluntary recall on something.
They will pay out when and only if they have too. Hence the low mileage addition of only a year/12k miles. Most of those affected by these troubles are well outside the warranty addition and far above the mileage requirements. |

For those that want to see the letter, I received one today as well. See the link below. I had the top 2 welds break on me and ended up drilling and bolting them which helped significantly, although I'm not exactly happy with it happening in the first place.
I agree that many of us will be outside the warranty extension, however it might help if your welds broke early on. https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B9I...ew?usp=sharing |

You may be eligible for reimbursement if you have paid for your spot welds to be repaired in the past! I received a letter from SOA stating so.

I received the same letter yesterday. I had a to re-read the warranty extension part a couple of times as it did not seem to make sense. All of the cars affected are already out of the extended warranty period. I bought my car in Nov 2007 and it is now 2015.
At least they are offering reimbursements but this is pretty lame from Subaru. |
