No wonder the resistor no longer worked in my fan!

That looks like a one-shot thermal fuse. Seems like it's a more likely culprit than corrosion for losing all speeds at once.

Only real difference was all the connections on the new one were just clean silver.

Well, I had the fan working on full speed - 4, from what I've read it's common when these fail (full fan working, others not).

For anyone else who has this happens, the service manual says you have to remove some wiring harness and then unscrew the ECM - I did neither and was able to replace the resistor. Just 2 screws hold it in. Hardest part was disconnecting the harness due to the awkward angle.

Just installed that sound deadener for the fan as well - will see tomorrow if it helps mask the fan ticking at low speeds.

What brand replacement? Where was it made?

Curious for sure about the cover, didn't order mine yet, bought tires for Excursion since they were on sale...

Just the Subaru OEM one. Not sure how much it will help but it was only $30, and Subaru added it to newer models probably for a reason. Took a quick drive last night and on the way home noticed it was a little quieter. If it helps anything it would only be on the lower speeds, there's a quiet tick tick tick sound on mine when on 1-2. After that the fan is way too loud to have any effect!

Default 2012 Impreza thread

I meant resistor

I replaced my fan about 60-70k ago because after enough evaporator cleanings it started to squeak....i dont have a ticking sound on lower levels, so I probably won't benefit for the same reason, the fan is so effing loud.

My excursion is the quietest fan i have as i have to put hand over the vent to verify it is working every once nd a while....the rear fan is loud however

Sorry about that - just got the Subaru OEM resistor.

Wonder if parking my car outside all the time reduces the lifespan? Luckily we're moving to a new house soon so we'll actually be able to use a garage now.

I have to say i am very impressed by the steering lockdown, about 1200mi on it , it's even better with my summer tires. Steering inputs have much more feel. Highway corrections are tiny. Not quite Focus ST steering, but more than happy

650mi Kreen update, oil level is down a bit but still over full. Was supposed to add kreen in addition to oil, not replacement,

Oil is getting very dark, not normal for me and only 3000-3500 on the oil. At the start it was dark gold color, now almost fully black. So it found something to kreen, er clean

Took my 2012 in for inspection to the dealer since there were TSBs to do.

Throwout bearing is terminal and I hear a distant cat fight every time I step on the clutch. I predict an engine-out event in the not so distant future.

Didn't pass due to worn front pads and rotors. Refused their $260 quote to fix.

They gave me a 2018 CVT sedan as a loaner.

The good:

+ Better brake feel, less slack
+ Better seat heater switch position
+ Nice, supportive leather seats
+ More accurate MPG display
+ Reduced road noise
+ Reduced induction noise
+ Stitched dash

The bad:

- CVT programming mimics a traditional auto, even at WOT. It lacks the speed and fun of a manual, the low cost of a traditional auto and the smoothness of a (properly programmed) CVT. Is shifting like a 90's Honda supposed to be "sporty"?

- Shiny everything. Stereo trim, stereo display, HVAC controls, door trim - A huge portion of the dash is made of this faux piano black material that showcases fingerprints, dust, smudges and scratches, while picking up glare from all directions. When I look at it, my eyes can't decide whether to focus on what's ahead of me or the reflected image behind. This is a terrible trend that needs to die.

- Infotainment. It's integrated and also shiny - didn't really care to play with it.

- Push button start. Give me a key.

- Styling.

- Handling. Felt larger, taller and less tossable than my car.

I'm going to stick with my opinion that GP/GJ is the pinnacle of the lineage.

I'm not a big fan of the newer ones looks, I like our model and the one previous. Both are pretty good.

I don't mind the CVT especially since it's my commuter car, if I want a car to rip around manual in it's not going to be a 150hp Impreza.

Also I think this car isn't as slow as people make it out to be, it is by no means fast but it is pretty nimble so it can keep its momentum well.

Maybe but the 5MT has been tested/proven to be faster. Is it fast, NOPE, but it is at least more fun to deive

Interesting, I would have thought the global platorm chassis would be more rigid, and the suspension better tuned for driving. I feel like the gp7 chassis is fine, but our suspension is a little floaty at times. Floaty is great for comfort, but kind of non predictable in corners.

Being that this is my only car, DD, I think the GP7 runs best between 35-65 mph in CVT 2nd to 4th gear. It carries it's weight well in that range accelerating quickly when needed. I am often suprised at it's zippiness. I often weave through traffic at these speeds and enjoy driving it in the city.

I think a manual would be fun. But the torque converter in the CVT sometimes kicks in between pseudo 1st, 2nd and 3rd giving the impression of a turbo surge.

My 20mm RSB may have something to do with it. Perhaps not a fair comparison.

Exclamation Fuel Leak

So i've recently purchased a used 2011 STI with 110,000kms from a dealer here in Canada. Came with carfax and a recent inspection report, which it passed in all categories.

It's now been about a week and a half since purchasing and i've run into the following issues:

check engine light - reads P0410. Not a huge issue in my mind, i'll probably do a secondary air pump delete and use an accessport to get rid of emissions codes.

My main concern right now: I was driving tonight when i noticed hesitation while giving the car gas - it was very minimal, so i figured maybe i just messed up with clutch or something. As i continued down the road, i stepped on the gas to make sure there wasn't anything going on, however at this point i began to notice the very distinct smell of fuel and the engine failed to respond to how much gas i was giving it.

No check engine light has come on at this point. I pulled into a parking lot down the street and came to a stop. the smell of gas is very strong at this point, both outside and inside with all windows rolled up. behind the car i can see a steady trail of gas, and checking my gauge i confirm that i've lost about a little under a quarter tank from the small amount of driving i've done. Underneath the car is a large puddle of gasoline.. at this point I hop back in the vehicle and head back home to park the car.

On the drive home the engine is really unresponsive and lugging at times, especially when accelerating from a stop, and shifting gears. at one point i had to turn on my hazard lights as i thought for sure the engine was going to stall from not getting any gas lol.

I make it home and park the car. Even when turned off i can see the gas dripping from what appears to be near the center of the car, perhaps slightly towards the driver's side. Looking under the hood i can't see any visible leaks, and seeing how it's dark outside and i don't have a garage or good lighting i have yet to take a thorough look under the car. However, i did attempt to start the car again, and it fired up just fine. When i turned the key on i could hear the fuel pump ?priming? and during the time fuel was being sprayed onto the ground in a large amount.

i plugged in my accessport and searched for errors but it found nothing. I'm not very handy with cars, kind of at a loss right now. Guess i should get it to a shop tomorrow morning? Hoping it's something that i might be able to fix myself. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

If you have to ask, don't attempt this repair.

Things can go very wrong, very quickly with pressurized fuel leaks.

Do not run the car anymore.

Pull the fuel pump fuse. Have the car towed to a shop for repairs.

Not sure how warranties go in Canada but in the US typically there is at least a 1-3 month warranty and I would take it and see if they will fix it for you.

Also just for the future this thread is for 2012+ imprezas.

Flyboy, have you picked out a clutch yet?

I'm giving this serious thought, mostly for the 9lb flywheel:

https://www.amazon.com/CLUTCH-ALUMIN.../dp/B079JYL4LX

It should speed up shifting, rev hang and pulls in lower gears. However, there may be issues with NVH and CELs.

Edit: Looks like 9lb might be too light for DD duty.

i haven't even looked since i did the initial browsing. you will do yours well before i do mine, so take pics do we know exactly how much our stock one weighs?

NVH?

still waiting to see what Kreen does, if anything other than make my oil turn black quickly. 200ish more miles to go on the recommended 1000 mile run. might drain and refill and try some more depending on how dirty it looks, or just change filters and add another 16oz to this oil then change everything which is the most likely scenario
