What's the difference between Embody by Sealy Latex Foam and plain 'ol Sealy Latex Foam mattresses? From what I've read, Embody sounds like some new fancy line that uses a lot of "green terminology" in their brochures which is supposed to justify the price increase (Dyson, anyone?).

Is one actually better than the other in terms of support and comfort?

Quit your complaining, last time I moved my mattress flew out of my truck on the highway and has since been covered in dirt and who knows what else.

I have suffered from insomnia, and shoulder/back pain for most of my adult life from bad beds.
Can I make a suggestion, based solely on my own experience?
Go somewhere that sells imitation tempurpedic beds (I went to American Furniture in Colorado), and drop $400 bucks on a 3lb foam memory foam bed. Tempurpedics don't seem that great when you try them in a mattress store or a friends house. Just not enough time for your body to adjust. So.... after so many nights and days of intense back and shoulder pain, I finally went to look at the generic ones.
I got one, and it was sort of a pain in the ass for a few weeks, but once I got used to it and it totally inflated after 2 weeks, I really started to notice less pain in my joints and bones. The bed just sunk in further if I laid on those parts of y body, instead of staying somewhat rigid like a coil mattress.
I'm now at the point where I can tell that i have a cheep memory foam mattress. It took me 3 months of sleeping on it to make that decision. Now, I have laid on a tempurpedic mattress (which is like a 3.7lb foam, which is a bit more soft and supports much much better), and it feels like the perfect sleep surface. It forms perfectly to your body, and it just feels like the best thing you've ever laid on!
But... just going and testing out a tempurpedic in a mattress store is not going to work. It feels like crap, or it feels OK but not good enough to make you want one. You have to get used to sleeping on one for a few months. Then, try out a coil spring mattress again... your back will immediately start hurting within a few minutes, and you'll truly see the difference.
Man.... People always told me there was a "learning curve" with memory foam beds, and I didn't understand what the hell that meant. It's a bed.... what is there to learn? But seriously.... get one. Sleep on it for 3 months. Then, try your old mattress again. You'll immediately know WHY your body hurt, and be glad you found a solution.

That's all I can say. That's my experience. It's been awesome, but it definitely took time to get used to.

My sleep number is a 25. It feels like crap on a cheep Sleep number, but on a nicer model it feels like sleeping in a hammock made of angel's pubic hairs. It's freaking amazing.

In the market for new beds this fall. We decided to for the 2 twins pushed together since we can't fit anything except a double up the stairs and we prefer completly different firmnesses.

I think I read somewhere about a 'new' generation of the tempurpedic beds that are supposed to breath? Any experiences with these?

BacDoc, what position do you recommend sleeping in? My chiro told me on my back or on my side with knees slightly bent and a pillow between my knees. My whole life I've been a stomach/side sleeper which is supposed to aggregate sciatica. My arm naturally ends up under the pillow with my elbow pointing towards the headboard. Is it possible to sleep on your side and not do this? I have broad shoulders if it makes a difference.

If BacDoc isn't answering, I'd be happy to throw a few positions at ya. And don't worry, I love broad shoulders. Rawwwwwr.

Pain side up pillow between your knees. Your hips/pelvis knees and shoulders should all remain anatomically neutral when you're sleeping.

I was mattress shopping yesterday. Macy's had a sale it was bs I think it was just to get you in the door. It was Queen for the price of a twin. I tried it out it wasn't firm enough for me and when I laid down I felt all the springs.

So I'm still shopping around. I laid down on a nice Martha Stewart for $899 but need to research her beds a bit more. Then I tried some Hotel Collection beds but they were in the thousands ($2,000-$4,000) price range and I just don't want to spend that right now but I must say they were really comfortable.

Don't want anymore pillow tops...we have two of those damn things and after a few years they cave in and the bed sucks plus you can't flip them to make the mattress last longer.

This thread is golden.. Lets cut right to the chase: Bacdoc, if you were to buy a new bed for lets say less than $3k, what would you get exactly? I need a new bed, and I'd love to hear suggestions..

My experience with the Temporpedic:

Price. $2600, I made them throw in Temporpedic pillows, sheets and the frame.

Comfort. I sleep through the night and wake-up pain free every time.

Heat. it does retain a little heat, not bad.

Slammin' action. This makes me work much harder. I look forward to taking my wife to the old springbox in the spare room or a hotel while on vacation.

Did you go for any of that warranty crap they try to push? We went to Macy's yesterday and really liked the mattress you bought.

Yo Original Sin. Just one thing... Keep that old mattress. After sleeping on your new one for about a month, try sleeping on the old one for a night. It's worth keeping the old thing around for a month, just to prove to yourself what a difference there is. It's truly amazing.

I had a Stern's & Foster that sagged and sucked. Replaced it with a Tempurpedic Deluxe that was fine for about a month....then it felt too firm and I started having pains again. I used Tempurpedic's return policy to get a Tempurpedic Cloud Supreme. I've had it for 4 months now and couldn't be happier. The first layer is soft and comfy and the next layers give all your back support. Best mattress I've ever had. I sleep with the AC set to 73, ceiling fan on, and usually end up covering myself with the bedspread during the night. No heat retention problems at all.
