EJ22e Phase I Block/ 25d Head gasket choices
I know this has probably been asked a dozen times, but with all the conflicting info I have been finding I need a straight answer. I am putting ej25d heads on a phase I ej22e ('92) block. I would like to know what head gaskets I should use. It makes sense to match the block and use 97mm bore gaskets, but some people claim they use 100mm and they are fine. I was advised to go with the thickest gasket I can which also makes sense, but some people have used .040 and claim that it works as well. Any help is much appreciated. A cometic part # would be ideal.
I have already done the 25d block with 22e heads and was not thrilled with the results so please don't tell me that is a better choice. Thanks in advance.

Mind telling me what motor the gasket was for? I have read through many threads on this forum and others that people have used the ej22t gasket with modification and ej22 phase 2 gaskets. I talked to someone from Cometic over the weekend and was told that I should use the gasket for the ej25d. I am planning on taking his advice and going with an ej25d gasket because the way he explained it to me made a lot of sense. plus it looks like I won't have to modify the gasket at all.

Post revival!
Please FtLoG could somebody tell me what HG to use w/the EJ22e block ('90-'98) + EJ25D heads ('98-'99)? The easy choice is the Cometic hybrid: H1631SPL051S Anything else that works, like a a Fel-Pro, that I can buy @ the local parts store? Thanks |

Like he said ^ ej222 gaskets worked for me as well.
EJ22 with EJ25D heads is one of my favorite combos, slap a TD04 on there, you'll be fine at 18psi as long as you can tune it. |

Wannabe and Soco, you both know that the coolant (edit: not oil) ports don't line up?
10 years ago I test fit the EJ22E HG on an EJ22T (the EJ22T matches the EJ25D) - There are a lot of covered up ports. (I was looking for a thinner HG to run on my EJ22T/EJ25D build.) And here you see the heads side-by-side: EJ22T vs EJ22E : And for clarity here are the Subaru EJ22 Head Gaskets Phase 1 vs Phase 2: EJ22E Phase 1 '90-'98: 11044AA114 EJ222 Phase 2 '99-'01: 11044AA542 And a pic of the oil and coolant passages on the block (FWIW: The 3 holes along the top and 3 along the bottom that line up vertically + horizontally are for the Head Bolts.): Last edited by wtdash; 03-10-2021 at 05:55 PM. |

Hmm, if I'm not much mistaken, your post actually corroborates what we've said? I used the 222 gaskets.
As you've shown, the 22e gasket doesn't match the 22t jacket or the 25d heads for that matter. I've got a 22t block and 25d heads sitting on my dresser right now, just double checked. 222 is the way to go. Last edited by SoCoNoHa; 01-22-2021 at 05:06 PM. |

I'm building an EJ22E (Phase 1 '90-'98) Block with the EJ25D( '97-'99) Heads. The EJ22E and EJ25D ports do not match up. If the EJ22T matches the EJ25D (per my pic) but does NOT match the EJ22E, how does that corroborate it? I know, I know and I know there a lots of peeps that run the EJ22T or EJ222 (Phase 2) HG for this or similar combos. What I don't know is Why that is safe considering they don't match? I've yet to read anything that clearly states 'Why/How' it's safe to run a HG that doesn't match both sets of ports. |

I'm not trying to argue, I just want to get to the bottom of this.
According to your THIRD picture, that's a phase 1, 22E gasket on the 22t block in the FIRST pic, is this correct? They DON'T seem to match. Now slap a 222 gasket on there. Almost a perfect match. Look at the top water jacket ports on the heads and the block: above one cylinder, two wide ports with nothing in the middle, just like the 222 gasket from your FOURTH picture, yes...? Am I crazy?? Even on the bottom, the center (relative to one cylinder) jacket port on the block gets covered, but the ports on either side match quite well. I must ask that you physically lay a 222 gasket on the 22t block and 25d head and post pics if you can. I don't have the 222 gasket to do this myself. Maybe someone else can weigh in? I could be losing it... Last edited by SoCoNoHa; 01-23-2021 at 02:10 AM. |

I'll likely pull the heads from the EJ22E this week to show.
BUT WTF? Fel-Pro's 26415 PT Head Gasket application shows fitment for EJ222 AND EJ251/3.?????????????????????? |

He's using the 22e block and 25d heads.
The 22e block is open deck, meaning the water jacket are wide open and will match ANY 2.2 gasket. The gasket coolant passages will have to match the head, which on the 222 gasket are nearly a perfect match for 25d heads. This is solved. That Felpro site is a bit confusing eh, doesn't make much sense, unless they decided a 99.7mm bore is close enough to work on a 96.9mm bore at stock power levels? |

This thread explains (in a roundabout way) why the Fel-Pro gasket can be used in both the Phase 2 222 and 25x engines. Also, why the Phase 1 22E gasket doesn't work.

Edit 3/10/21: Got the Cometic HG:
P/N:* H1631SPL051S Description: Subaru EJ22/25 Hybrid engine 98mm**.051" MLS Gasket SOHC 16V '96 EJ22E is apart and NOW I understand why the port matching - of the coolant ports - isn't that critical. Per the added pics, I have an EJ253 Subaru OEM HG on the EJ22 block (the EJ25x matches the EJ25D heads) and the Cometic HG on both block and heads. Due to the BLOCK's coolant port configuration they'll work 'just fine' as is; and of course since they match the 2.5 config they'll work on the heads, too. EJ22E block (yes, I cleaned it up b4 installing HG): OEM EJ253 HG on EJ22E block: Cometic on EJ22E block: Cometic on EJ25D heads: Last edited by wtdash; 03-10-2021 at 05:49 PM. |
