Default Reviving a 2004 WRB STI - Track/show build

Hi guys! My name is Drew and I recently picked up a 2004 WRB STI that needed some good ol' loving. The end goal is to turn her into the ultimate track/show car(if possible). The setup is going to be so that we can take her to shows and participate in big events, then the next day take her to the track and drive her like she should be driven..

I have teamed up with Mishimoto and Mirm Auto(Igor M, his username is Igz on here) to build the car. For those who don't know Igor or his car, I will link his build thread here and some pictures of his build(the 04 is going to follow a similar setup as his).

You can follow the build on instagram: @1woodsti

Sit back and enjoy me mumbling on through this thread, I do apologize.

Short story to Igor and I.. Necessary because he is the reason I got into Subarus.. I was driving to my grandparents one day when I saw a grey STI shoot past me going the other way. It was love at first sight, and I knew one day I would have an STI. It became an instant dream car for me. On the way home from my grandparents I saw the car parked outside Mirm Auto in Windsor, ON where we live. I stopped and pulled in to check out the car, Igor came out and we started chatting. It was days after he had just finished putting the car together. I was looking for my first car, we chatted and I went home. I ended up having an lightly modded MK4 GTI and pretty heavily modified Audi B6 Ultrasport before picking up my STI. I didn't see Igor for a few years, but I ran into him this past summer with his car, and we ended up chatting a few other times and he helped me out with my Audi before I sold it.

Fast forward to November 2016, when I picked up my STI. He helped me when looking for the right platform and what would be a good starting point. This isn't me advertising for him or trying to promote him, he has gone above and beyond for me and treated me like a good friend and not a customer in the beginning. He is a genuine guy who knows a ton about Subarus and cares about moving the subie community in the right direction.

Sorry for the story, now to the CARS!!

He took this,

Pretty neat car Igor.. Anyone remotely close to Windsor, Ontario, come see Igor and his shop(Mirm Auto) because he is one of the nicest people I know, and he is an expert when it comes to Subarus.

Now to the day I picked mine up!

Solid platform, but she needs some lovin' for sure.
The is a clean title, but had some nasty damage on the paint from a side swipe.

Right to Igor for an assessment and to cure the body of the few rust spots and damage she had.

She needed a new windshield desperately..

Here she is right after the body work and new windshield, headed to my shop for the winter tear down and rebuild.

I dabble with photography, one day I brought my camera and grabbed a few quick shots while our cars were together in storage. You will see a fair amount of my photography throughout the thread.

Back to the build!

On the first day of disassembly my Subaru gave to me...(12 days of reviving a Subadoo)

A lot of headaches

So you know what I am dealing with underneath the car.. Don't worry she will be spotless when we are finished.

Basically at this point we are just taking apart the car and assessing the damage and what needs to be done and taken care of first.

Spent an entire day stripping interior and chasing/removing wires..

At this point in time the car has pretty much no suspension of subframe left on it. We are taking care of the bottom of the car first before going anywhere else. Want to make sure everything is new or refurbished and the bottom end is solid before heading to interior, engine/transmission and paint.

The aftermarket parts are piling up in the shop as days go by, only making me more excited about this build. Lots and lots of goodies on the way.. Can't wait to show you what we have in store for this car, it is going to be wild.

I will be updating this thread pretty much every week, so stick around if you want and check it out!

Please follow the build on instagram: @1woodsti

Thanks guys

Made some decent progress on the back end of the car. Focused on taking everything off so we can get a look at the bare bones of the car.

Most of the stuff will be replaced or powdercoated.

Sanded and painted some miscellaneous pieces that hide under the bumpers.

As soon as the front suspension is out everything will be sent off to be blasted and powedercoated unless it is being replaced. We will rebuild it with new bushings once it all comes back.

The car is now back at our shop where we are doing the work in our free time(mostly weekends).

So we know where everything came from and to stay organized..

Feel free to leave any comments or suggestions.

More progress!

Spent and entire day sanding the interior(there was some minor surface rust under the carpets) and then cleaned it and hit it with a quick coat of rust paint just for sale measures..

Dropped the diff out!

And then dropped out the gas tank to see if there was any rust hiding.

I do apologize for these boring posts, but we are trying to rebuild and fix as much as possible so that we know the car is extremely solid underneath. We want it to be able to handle anything we throw at it.

We are having most of the stuff sandblasted and powdercoated/painted. All new bushings are going in, bolts are being replaced and certain parts are being replaced with new OEM ones.

I can't thank my dad and my friends enough for helping me out so far. None of this would be happening without them.

The next post will make up for this boring stuff!

A couple of exciting things happened..

A while ago I purchased a bunch of parts for the car(lots of goodies you can't see yet) from a very nice lady with an 04 Aspen White STI. She was parting it out because she was starting an LS1 and T56 swap into the STI! It was wild to see..

Her plans changed and she put the STI up for sale, it had no transmission, engine or front bumper. We chatted for a while and we agreed on a price. She even threw in a ton of miscellaneous pieces(literally a whole engine) that she had scattered around.. I can't thank her enough for being s0 down to earth and easy to deal with.

Here is the car when the owner was daily driving her..

Unfortunately she currently sits like this, but it will all change as soon as it arrives at our shop.

I actually haven't decided what I am going to do with the car yet.. I originally wanted an Aspen White STI but there were none for sale in Canada when I was on the hunt.
I could't pass up the deal on this one, as the suspension is fully loaded and interior is mint.

I am torn between the cars now, as I realistically only need one...

There will be an update on that soon though as I take the car apart and see what the underbody is like.

Another positive is I picked up some new shoes.. I won't say what they are yet, but they are a discontinued set and I got them brand new in box. They are my dream wheels for the 04 STI..

That's it for now! I will update more as I take both cars apart and decide what I am doing with the builds.

If you can, please follow the builds on instagram @1woodsti

Thanks guys

This is a few years later and the car has been through two phases and is now in progress to its third(and hopefully final).

Here was the first phase of the build. This was stock body with a lip kit, 18X9 Work XD9s with 265/35/18 Bridgestones. Mishimoto FMIC and intake, full turboback exhaust and BC coilovers. There was other things done at this time that I can't remember.

Then things started to really pickup and I cut the car up. I have absolutely no regrets! Around this time I started managing the shop I now am I partner/owner in. Mirm Autoworks in Windsor, Ontario. I have a build thread going for our shop car right now.

The second phase: Cut up the body for LIC Motorsports rear flares, RPG carbon front flares, Cusco style front lip, WRX side skirts and an INGs rear bumper.

Engine wise switched to Tomei Equal length headers and a few other goodies like a big GReddy core and IAG big MAF intake. More power stuff to come..

At this time I also added my Sparco Evo2s in navy blue. Quite possibly one of my favourite parts of the car.

Wheel setup I kept in the XD9 family as it is my favourite wheel of all time. 18X10 +18 with 245/40/18 Michelin Pilot sports. Sitting on custom built Fortune Auto 500 coilovers.

Now we are heading into the final phase, I hope.. It's never ending. The car sat in storage for almost two years while I focused on finishing university and growing our business. During COVID we refreshed the motor and began fitting the original set of Karltons that I scored on the for sale forums.

Here is the old and crusty motor sitting on the stand before being torn into. Went through it and did a refresh.
