'02 TS 5 speed, swap into an automatic?
Hi all,
I have a 20 year old 5 speed TS wagon with 264,000 miles I bought new in 2001. My little Scooby has been a great car for all those years, but unfortunately, we just bought a house with a steep, short downhill driveway into the garage. I'm going to have to back up the driveway to get to the road, even though I grew up driving manuals in SF I'm thinking I'm going to have to sell her and buy an automatic. It's breaking my heart, but one mistake and I'm either going to be in the garage or I'll eventually burn out the clutch. My last ditch option to keep my bugeye is to do an engine/trannie change, is it even possible or cost effective? Thanks.

i imagine it would be cost prohibitive to do the swap, better off selling and then buying an automatic

Auto to manual is done somewhat often (recently did it myself), but from everything I've read going manual to auto can't be done. But this might be coming from the standpoint of doing a wiring hack to achieve. It may be possible if you replace the entire bulkhead harness, buy all the sensors, replace the ECU, etc, etc. But I think you can see here that it's not as straight forward as going auto to manual. And it still might not work. I'd say either keep it and get use to the hill which won't take long since you've been driving a manual anyway, or just buy a car that came with an auto.
