Is VDC any good? Are front and rear LSD better?
My mother was thinking about getting an Outback VDC.
I was wondering if the VDC system is any good for off roading. I know it's designed to take the place of LSD, but is it any better? My Father's 04 4runner has a system similar to VDC. The main problem is that when you get into deep mud/snow the system kills power going to the engine because it thinks you're driving off the road. This always happens when there is one or more wheels lifted off the ground. Toyota made an in cabin switch that locks the center differential and turns off the VDC-like system, but still applies traction control to all four wheels. The traction control system on the 4runner is unstopable when in lock mode. It's just like having 3 locked differentials. Is the outback VDC system similar to this? I know you can turn off the VDC system at low speeds by means of an incabin switch. Does the car still have traction control to all 4 wheels? or does the system completely turn off and leave you with front and rear open differentials? If so, I wouldn't recomend my mom to buy it. -thanks

The rear diff on that is a LSD type, not an open so she should be alright.

Depending on what your doing will determine what would be best.
Considering the outback is not an offroad mudding car.....the VDC is far superior for every day use and occasional light off road then just LSD's. A good VDC system will basically keep the car on it's intended path, regardless of what you do. Just steer and hold the pedal to the floor around a turn and the car should continue on the path you point it. My uncle's A6 is this way. Subaru's VDC is similar. In combination with AWD, it's very very good. I believe can disable VDC. They you basically just have a standard subaru AWD system w/ rear LSD. |
