Just got a 2015 Impreza 2.0i but I don't think it's a base model. (I'm a newbie here) I was wondering what were some good modifications that can be made to make it more "off-road". For example the style of the XV. Are there somewhat cheap ways to raise it a few (~3-4) inches? New wheels and new tires?

I was also looking at a roof rack lights on the front.

I was going to make my own thread but you must post 3 legit responses first.

Seriously? Who buys an Impreza and IMMEDIATELY says "how do I turn this into a crosstrek?"

How hard would it have been to say "I'd actually like to buy a crosstrek instead of the impreza" when you were at the dealer? Too scared?

You're going to put WAY more into it to get it the same as a crosstrek than it would have been to buy a crosstrek instead of an impreza.

Thanks for being rude everyone. It's my first Subaru and it was a graduation gift. I'm a nineteen year old college student and was just curious, as I really enjoy hiking and bringing my car with would be a plus to get me farther. I can't even post two replies on this forum without getting crap. Seriously wow.

There seems to be a lot of hate going on in this thread, so let me try to help you out. There are a few good things you can do to the Impreza. Yeah, you can lift, it, but lifting it more than an inch probably isn't cost effective or practical. Subtle solutions sells a cheap 1 inch lift kit. Mud flaps, do that, rallyarmors.

The sound system is crap, replace the speakers if you haven't already. I replaced them all with the subaru kickers and added a new head unit.

Okay now we get into the fun stuff. Sway bar. Seriously, SWAY BAR. Cannot stress this enough, put a 19mm on there off a 2008+sti, and don't look back. It's a bolt on solution and it's cheap.

Strut tower brace, I've heard those net good results with a sway bar, haven't had the chance to test this out for myself though, so proceed at your own risk. Cheap though.

New tires, because the stock tires can go die and go to hell. Mother of god do they suck.

Now here is where they get REALLY fun. Throttlehappy tune, it's a tune to the ECU, improves fuel economy and power output, as well as improving the throttle response and linearity massively. Pretty much doubles mid range torque, gives about 25% more on the top end after the various iterations (goes through about 3 or 4 revisions before it's done). This is the best mod that can be done for the price to this car aside from tires and the sway bar.

Borla bolt on 11843 axleback exhaust, adds a proper sound to the little engine that, after the tune, really can. Plus with the airbox mod it adds some power.

Air box mod (cut in the bottom round section of the air box for more airflow into the engine), recommended with exhaust mod and high flow filter. Pretty cheap mod.

The above two mods below the tune are not really recommended outside of each other, and don't net significant gains alone, however, together, and with the addition of a tune, they net good gains.

Perrin short throw adapter and aftermarket shifter knob if you have a 5 speed. Really takes away the whole rubbery feel of it.


Not sure you want to raise it more than 1 inch just due to the alignment issues you would face, plus the whole ride and handling would be altered to be worse than a crosstrek. Changing tire/wheel size to do this would gear you down hardcore and despite how cool it looks, isn't worth it.

I have a 2014 and I actually just changed the wheels and tires to the ones my buddy had on his WRX with off-road mud+dirt tires. It handled pretty well on the trails out here in MA. Nothing to serious. I go biking and hiking and it got me there pretty good. If you are going really deep then maybe look to get the XV crosstrek lift kit. I have coil overs on mine and have it dropped for the summer so can no longer go to the trails lol. But I'm going to see if I can lift it all the way up and let you know how it handles.

Thank you very much for this response. It would have been a better experience to get this one first but oh well.
I will look into a 08' STI sway bar!

Thanks also for the "do not" list. Like don't increase wheel size or raise too much. I dont need it too high, just at its stock height it's too easy to bottom out.

I've heard about the upgraded exaust, and thank you for giving me a brand to shoot for.
I'm unclear on what the tuning is exactly, how do you get that done? Is it like a programming adjustment?

That would be legit to see how it would handle after that. I will have to play it safe until I see it doesn't negatively effect anything too much.
I am definitely looking into the upgraded tires though. As stated above the stock ones aren't too good. Haha

Wow. Some of these dudes are rough. What's the point of being on a forum if you're just going to bash people asking the questions? Isn't that the point of a forum?

Anyway, literally everything that Dirt Bringer said is dead on. Can't go wrong with anything there.

The 1 inch lift isn't too bad and won't hurt driving or handling too much with a proper alignment and upgraded sway bars. But honestly the stock ride height isn't too bad if you plan on doing mild off-roading.

3-4 inch lifts are probably a long shot without some serious modifications. $$$

All in all, doing everything in bits and pieces. Don't try to do everything at once. Experiment with what you like and do a lot of research on parts that other people have had success with.

My car is mostly cosmetic upgrades with the sport grille, spoiler, Thule roof rack, front under spoiler, mud flaps, hella horns, light bulb upgrades, Sparco wheels.

Handling upgrades are wider 225/45-17 Continental DWS06 tires, 19mm STi rear sway bar and a Megan Racing front strut tower brace. Also have a 1/4" spacer for the rear shocks. Car handles like a dream and I love it to death.

Make the car your own and you'll love it much more than a car copied from someone else.

Keep in mind that adding the sway bar will decrease articulation, but doesn't matter with the type of off roading you'll be doing. I've gone down plenty of dirt roads and trails with no issue. You may have to get creative with your driving in some rutted areas set by vehicles with taller clearance. The front overhang is pretty terrible for angle of approach, so don't try getting onto anything too steep.

Better tires is the #1 thing to do. What size wheels are on your model? I went from the stock 205/50R17 on mine to 215/50R17. You get more sidewall to protect your rims, and an amazing 0.2" lift. I felt 225 would be the upper limit on what I would feel comfortable with, but some users reported some rubbing on full lock turns and when bottoming out the suspension. And the difference to the speedometer is like 1 mph off at highway speeds, so I felt there would be no need for adjustments, or feeling any power loss.

DO NOT go for the 22mm sway bar. I did, and it wasn't worth it. It completely overpowers the front sway bar, the car dives on the front when in a tight corner, the bushings that come with those are usually polyeurethane, so you go over a bump on one wheel at the front and it's comfortable, then the rear and the whole car shifts due to the extreme thickness and zero flex in the bushings. This is not a race car, you want some flex. That being said I have a perrin 22mm sway bar I'll sell for cheap if you really want to try it, but I really don't think you should. The car actually corners better on 19mm despite the increased body roll. It also balances the ride with the front rather well.

Basically 08+ sti 19mm bars will work, there is also a 20mm for the crosstrek that I've been considering, you might want to look into that as well.

Make sure if you upgrade the exhaust, that you open up the air box a little, it helps balance out the flow. The borla even pops and burbles, it's nice

The tune retunes the engines ECU, so it basically changes air/fuel mixtures, intake and timing settings, as well as throttle maps. It's outside of warranty of course but throttlehappy can send you a tune that wipes the flash counter and sets it back to stock so Subaru never knows. The stock tune is awful, subaru tuned it for emissions, so it injects rich amounts of fuel for no reason while you drive, and the throttle map is designed for either novice drivers, or to impress on a test drive, because it makes no sense at all. There is a lot of documentation on this on the respective thread, but basically it increases power, mid-range torque, fuel efficiency and overall engine performance. It's all done within the parameters of the engines stock safety settings, and since more fuel is burnt instead of running off the engine as fuel vapors, it's better for the engine in the long run (according to the guy at Throttlehappy, he knows a lot more about engines than I do).

Nice wheels are also fun, I haven't done it because I don't care as much for cosmetics as some people, but there are literally TONS of mods if that's what you're interested in.

Part of the reason the car bottoms out too easily is that it's suspension is set up as a daily driver, so it's not that it's ride height is too low (it's higher than most cars actually), but that the springs are very soft. The best solution for that would either be the 1 inch lift, or coil-overs, which I've considered, but they are expensive. I won't recommend any because I don't know what a good option is.

Lifting this car a lot is a fools errand because Crosstrek, but lifting it a little, including through coil overs, is kind of cool, because it's 4wd system is so advanced. It would make a great functional semi-suv that actually doesn't get stuck all the time like some of the other car-trucks on the road today.

Anyway now that I've rambled on for a while, let me know if you're interested in any of these mods, and I can send you links to whatever you like.

Oh yeah, if you go full crazy, you can do a turbo kit like mini ian is doing. Mad respect to the guy but he cray
