Default RWD/AWD Selectable

Does anyone make a center diff that would work like this? I understand that this isn't how a diff actually works and the resulting mods that would need to be done to the drivetrain. I'm working on a design project.

What I mean is a center diff that you could essentially disconnect the front driveshaft and still get full power to the rear wheels, but when selecting AWD it would still act as a Torsen or open diff. Anyone heard of something like this?

look at some old school suby transmissions... One of my cars has an RX transmission which was kinda neat because it has a center diff lock.

If you were to use this trans and come up with a reasonable way to disconnect one or both of the front axles and you lock the center diff you'll have RWD. If you reconnect axle(s) and unlock the diff, you've got AWD.

I did this a couple times for entertainment and to tide me over while I wait for new front axles to show up when I wrecked them. It's not really "selectable"... Had to pull an axle every time... haha

Have a look at a picture of a suby trans and you'll see why this is going to be impossible to do totally internally with a center diff being that the front pinion is apart of the main shaft.

Ah I didn't realize the front pinion was set up like that

So if you used the RX trans and basically came up with an easier way to lock the hubs in and out like an old school 4wd that would do it

Front pinion is not part of the output shaft. On the older 4x4 and FWD ones it was, but on all the AWD/FT4wd transmissions it runs through the hollow output shaft.

So yes, with a re-designed center diff and transfer housing it could be done, but why bother when you can get a dccd?

Because the DCCD really only controls the amount of torque that is transferred when a wheel slips..I want something that can be full time RWD as well as AWD at the flip of a switch. Completely user controllable

You want a blazer.......You have a Subaru.

What you want is not possible until you design your own center diff to transfer 100% of torque to the rear when "open" instead of the 65% that the DCCD does. Good luck with that.

Also the rear diffs cannot see 100% of the engines power reliably as well right?

I am putting more than 100% of power through my R160. I know of folks putting twice stock power through them.

What you will find out quickly is that the geometry sucks for putting power down. You will have wheelspin, you will not be putting down 100% power. If you do, you will eventually break stuff.....that's a given.

I understand the issues with the rear diff. I was just curious if anyone had done anything like this before

I have 05 Legacy GT and I'm extremely interested in being able to choose AWD or RWD, can I get some help or advice even though I'm on an extremely limited budget?

The center coupler is just not capable of this.

If you get a center spool, you can 'select' AWD or RWD, however, 'AWD' will be with a solid center diff (no limited slip, no open diff), and when you 'select' RWD from AWD, you have to physically jack it up, and remove the front axles, and fit stubs in so you don't lose oil.

The Subaru 5eat runs a planetary gear center diff; 45:55 torque split. The 5spd runs a viscous LSD center diff. The non-VTD 4eat AWD runs a transfer clutch that drives the rear wheels. Get some engineers to reverse that and have the transfer clutch to the front and then you'll be like Nissan GTR.

Default AWD with RWD selection possibility?

I know a little bit about the Nissan GTR and the Skyline r32 but not that much, did Subaru ever have AWD with RWD selection option? The. Skyline r32 AWD with RWD selection option is exactly what I want for my 05 Legacy GT with more power going to the rear wheels even though it’s currently a 45/55 split.
