Default Need Differential help!!

Alright so I have a 1997 Subaru Legacy outback with 208k miles on it. Its a 2.5L with a 5spd Manual. I took it into a repair shop just to do a inspection on it so i know what I should fix first.

Basically he said my rear differential has bad bearings and is causing the noise. Its Kindof noisy when you coast at lower speeds(below 40 mph) so im wondering if he is infact right. It has done this since i got it and since I have had it i have put 10k hard miles on it. The guy said it has the possiblity to blow up on me at any time. So is he correct or is it something else. and how much risk am I at as far as having a failure.

**Also I when I am accelorating through the gears mainly in 2nd and 3rd gear my car seems to sputter right in between 2,000 rpm and 3,000 rpm. My thought is i has something to do with injectors but i have used the cleaner and it makes no difference. The clutch was just replaced before I bought it. Any thoughts

Much apppeciated!

Been driving on a growling r160 rear diff for a few years. Never had a problem. Doesn't mean you wont.
