Default E.T. biggest grossing movie of all time.

With the 10 year anniverssary of the Titanic coming up, I'm sick of hearing about it being the biggest grossing movie (in theaters) of all time.

E.T. was.

Box office revenues:

E.T. - $434,949,459 in 1982.

Titanic - $600,788,188 in 1997.

Inflation calculator $434,949,459 in 1982 is worth this much in 1997:

$723,413,348.91 using the Consumer Price Index
$661,541,971.68 using the GDP deflator
$866,390,458.41 using the value of consumer bundle
$702,433,893.11 using the unskilled wage
$942,863,143.71 using the nominal GDP per capita
$1,109,662,301.80 using the relative share of GDP

**** you rose.

Hey, don't get smart on us now. We don't like looking at the big picture. It's not our fault movies only cost 1/2(roughly) of what they do now back then, we still made more.

Dunno about 'revenue/grossing' but most expensive to make is Cleopatra.

ET is sooooo overrated. Can't stand that movie. Or Titanic for that matter.

Somehow I don't think ticket prices at the box office have matched up with inflation either.

I was only a year old when ET came out...what did a movie ticket cost then? I think when I saw titanic it was about $6.75. Now it's up to 8 and a quarter.

Also, ET was made on the cheap.

ET - 10,500,000
Titanic - 200,000,000

I loved falling down into the pit and having to jump out. Man, I could do that for hours and hours.

you're statement is an indictment against the great steven spielberg.
And if the steven spielberg is guilty, then isn't this an indictment of our motion picture industry in general? I put it to you, cwb124 - isn't this an indictment of our entire American society? Well, you can do whatever you want to us, but we're not going to sit here and listen to you badmouth the United States of America. Gentlemen!

I wish box office numbers weren't in dollars but in number of tickets sold.

It's easy to set a new "opening weekend record" when your movie opens on a Wednesday night, and costs $11.95/ticket.
