Default Rally West Virginia: Less than 5 weeks!

Hi All,

I am a newbie on this forum, but I hope that this meesage will be of great interest to Subaru owners and rally fans. The 2007 Rally West Virginia is less than 5 weeks away, headquartered in Elkins, WV. Stages will be run starting 1 PM EDST on Friday, Aug, 3, and continue all day on Saturday, Aug 4.

This is a full stage rally, and features 19 stages over the 1-1/2 days, with a total of 95 stage miles. It is part of the USRC and ESRC, sanctioned by NASA RallySport, and is also one of the 3 events selected from all the rallies in the whole nation in 2007 to form the 3 event MaxAttack! 2WD rally car shootout. The MaxAttack! series pays out $8000 per each of these 3 events for the best 2WD rally cars in the US.

SO, if you live in the eastern USA, and are a real Subaru rally fan, please come out and watch, or, even better, volunteer as a marshal for one of our stage teams. We are still in need of volunteer marshals for the event; you can read about marshalling duties on our website:
www.rallywv.com
Go to the "Volunteers" webpage and download the "Volunteer Information" document. I tell folks that being a stage marshal makes for along day, BUT you get your own private spectating areas. You can't get any closer to the action!

We also have a few openings for experienced timing control people, and ham operators, so please feel free to volunteer for any position with which you are comfortable. If you volunteer, let me know via email that you are coming, and fill in the "Volunteer Form" on the volunteers webpage, and email it to:
[email protected]
All volunteers receive free event t-shirts, and a free ticket to the Sataruday evening awards banquet. We are working on other freebies and benefits for volunteers.

Spetating info will be up soon on the website if you can't make it to help the event operations directly. And, if you have any questions at all, direct them to :
[email protected]

Please try to come if you are in the region. The roads are very challenging, and reach altitudes of almost 4000' on the mountains of Randolph County WV. There is camping aplenty, and the mountain air and scenery is superb this time of year.

If you do come in you Subie, stop and say hi to the owners and sales manager at the local Elkins Subaru dealer; they are new to Elkins, and we want them to know how much Subaru fans love rallying!

Regards,
Mark Bowers
Chairman, Rally WV

And PS: (Hope you'll forgive the Mitsu Starion moniker! I use it on many rally sites so that everyone knows it's me.....)

Hi Mark - It was really a great event last year. When is the spectating info going to be up? Are they the same locations as last year?

Worked it last year (car was broken), running it this year. Great country with great roads in the middle of nowhere (sort of, but can be fun getting there on some twisty roads depending on which direction you're coming from). Come out and enjoy, you won't regret it.

Same places for Saturday. A new place for the Friday stages, in a different corner of Randolph County, WV. Spectating info will be up in another week or so; our webmaster is on vacation, re-fighting the battle of Gettysburg! (I think he gets it in Picketts Charge tomorrow...)

We are still short of marshals for Saturday. If not enough marshals, we may have to scrtatch a stage with spectating. Soooooo, if you are coming to spectate, please consider being ready to volunteer as a marshal to help us out. We would put you in your own private spectating point! If you are ready to consider being a volunteer marshal, you can also get out on some of the non-spectating stages and see something new.

So, please give us a hand. If you can volunteer we would appreciate it. The website has an easy-fill .pdf volunteer form that you can send in to me at [email protected].

You can ask any other question here or at that email.

Thanks!
Mark Bowers

My girlfriend and I are actually considering making the drive from Charlotte, NC to spectate. Have to look and see exactly how far it is. Really wish there was more rallying further south.

UPDATE: looks to be about a 6 hour drive. I'm thinking we'll be there. Woohoo!!!

PSST...there's one every February that's practically in your back yard: Sandblast Rally.

Oh yeah, I'll be in WV too, crewing for rallynutdon (a.k.a. my father).

And BTW, Mark can use workers, please. There's a possibililty of a stage (spectator, used multiple times I believe as most of them are) being not run if there's not enough workers. If you're coming just to spectate, please think about working. Us competitors appreciate it and some of us competitors work as much as we can when we're not running (I'm going to work Maine (New England Forest Rally) this weekend because without workers, no rally).

I might be up for volunteering for this, I need to look at a few details of scheduling and financing (mainly trying to afford hotel space) though.

Sounds like fun though, I've always found rally racing interesting despite having never been to one.

I'll be hopefully crewing for JP's team in PGT. Can't wait to get down south and enjoy the scenic drive to some states I have never been to.

[BROKEN RECORD MODE=ON]

Sign up HERE to work a spectator spot (as a "Spectator Marshal"). You'll get a a free shirt, get to meet a bunch of great people (who dish out the best info and stories), and best of all, you'll get a prime, front row view (in front of the banner tape ).

Don't worry about being too late, we can ALWAYS use the help. Just make a note that you're new to it, and request to be put with someone who has experience. Also, be sure to take a look at the documents linked to at the top of the information page. (FYI there is a workers meeting at 11AM on Friday.)

[BROKEN RECORD MODE=OFF]

Hope to see you there!

And we wil be very happy to have your help. Like has been said, marshaling gets you your own private spectating area. It's long days and gets boring for a bit; but then the cars come through and you are right there.

Our main need for stage marshals is for Saturday. We will have a volunteers meeting on Friday evening at the Elkins High School for the Saturday only volunteers; exact time is TBA on the website on the volunteers page. You will be assigned to stage teams to meet early Saturday AM, and will head out with your teams on Saturday. (Those stage teams may already be out in the field for the Friday stages so you may not meet them on Friday eve.) Saturday stage teams HAVE to leave Elkins HS parking lot at 6 AM on Saturday.

Free t-shirts and Saturday evening dinner at the awards banquet for volunteers! We are also working to try to send out lunches. Be prepared with food, water, rain gear, bug repellant, and all other stuff to be out for a long day on Saturday.

And, if you want to work the Friday stages too, we will be having the Friday's volunteers meeting at 11 AM sharp at the Elkins High School. Stage teams will depart by 11:30 AM for the 2 Friday roads from there.

Lots of good info on the 'Volunteers' page at www.rallywv.com

And BTW, very low cars can be difficult on some of the stage roads. Don't want to see anyone damage their low front spoiler!

Thanks!
Mark B.

Sounds good. I most likely will sign-up to help within the next couple days.

Also, to anyone, I have a reservation at the Days Inn in Elkins but would like to find one or two roomates to help share the cost. If anyone out there is still looking for a place to stay send me a PM.

We are entered. Lots to do to prep the car as we ran last weekend at Pikes Peak with hillclimb spec and the rally set-up is much different. Sure will be nice having power at flat-lander elevations again.
