Default Name that noise!!

I'm trying to figure out what this noise is but I'm stumped and would like some opinions. I'm the third owner of the car and have no idea of the maintenance history or how it was previously driven. It was bone stock when I got it and shows no signs of any hack jobs or mods. The car has 51k miles

It makes a high-pitched whining noise that is especially noticeable above 60mph. It gets higher and lower with speed. Engine RPM has nothing to do with it and it makes the noise even with the clutch in. It's all related to how fast the wheels are spinning.

When i got the car, the transmission was 1qt low (for how long nobody knows). I changed the tranny and rear diff fluid with regular 75w90 oil. Everything's topped off and there are no leaks. Any ideas???

Thanks in advance,
Dan

i had the same noise, i think if its the one your talking about. i thought my turbo was blown, but i took it in and they said it wasn't the turbo. check for any vaccume seal leaks. on your blowoff valve, if you have one. or the hoses connneted directly to your turbo. get a boost leak tester and see if
you have any major leaks through your turbo system. thats all i got for you dude.

Here's your check list of things to look at, and where I would start:

pads/rotors
Wheelbearings
handbrake adjustment
backing plates
rear diff fluid
driveshaft carrier bearing
Outriggers
Any driveline bushings that have sagged over time.

the noise almost sounds like gears or some sort of metal on metal whine if that helps (kindof like a supercharger sound but much quieter). It seems like it's coming from the front of the car as well but it's hard to tell exactly. What are outriggers and backing plates?

backing plates = dust shields. Behind the rotors. Sometimes a rock will get stuck in there.

Outriggers are the forward portion of the rear subframe assembly to hold up the rear diff. If they put in outrigger bushings you'll get a whining type of noise.

cool, I'll start poking around a bit and see if I can narrow it down. Since I can't look at things under speed, I'll have to try it in the driveway...

Is there a good way to check some of the bearings / bushings with the car up on jack stands? Also is there a diff oil that is good to quiet things down? I've heard good things about RedLine but maybe there are others...

I think I may have the same problem as you. I was reading through threads to see if anyone else has the same symptoms as me. I have an '06 wagon with 44k on it. The noise I hear comes from the front of the car, either center or passenger side. The noise sounds like noisy tires, almost like I had monster truck tires on my car. I've changed brake pads and tires (both scheduled replacements) to no avail.

So, do my symptoms sound like yours; have you had any luck; and finally, does anyone else have ideas? Thanks.

Put your car on jacks stands and make your whells speen as fast as 60mph or so. Go around the car. Where can you hear it? If it comes from one of your wheels make sure that springs are vibrating and if it does it's a whell bearing if not go under the car

Your not supposed to do this i heard it can damage the center diff, sounds like his rear diff, i had the same issue when i had my 2002, 2 months later i was putting in a rear diff.

Does the noise change pitch or intensity under acceleration, deceleration or when holding steady?

Most "whining" noises (what would sound like a supercharger) are almost always worn out ring and pinion gears. This would be coming from either your front or center differential.

I've fried two front ring and pinion gears so I'm all too familiar with this noise.

i say Wheelbearings, also i would put the car up on jackstands, and try the wheels spin, not 60mph though, just put it in 2nd and rev it up, see where the squeak is coming from

I don't see how it can?

all 4 wheels are spinning.. however I would not take it to 60Mph thats just uhmmm well stupid...

Anyways I had this same issue and it was my front Diff that blew up

To make it clearer it made the whining sound and about 5 stop lights later taking off slow and only going 5 Mph the front diff broke under load.
