Man...

Just bought my first WRX this last weekend (Lightly driven 17' Limited CVT) and I can't wait to have a serious journey with mine like you have yours.

Absolutely loved reading this entire thread over the last three days.

March 30th 2020 Pickup anniversary

Six years ago I picked up this car from Manchester Subaru in NH

I am very happy with how much joy this car brought me despite the misinformation out there about the CVT (Yes, I also drive manual).

CVT cooler is very helpful. Changing the CVT fluid earlier than 30k might be a good idea. Amsoil syntehtic CVT fluid is a very good option - I switched to it from the OEM Orange high torque CVT fluid.

Extra Special thanks to my brother Perscitus for helping me along the way

At this time I am using the car to drive to my hospital to decrease my presence on the subway (Normally it would be a waste to drive to work from where I live). It adds a good amount of joy despite the dire situation we are in.

I am proud to be a healthcare worker - especially at this time

Thank you Hekler for sending masks to us here in NYC

Here she is parked at my hospitals parking lot (Doorshox always come in handy to protect from dings and I also utilized the parking's cone for some extra safety...)

Everyone Stay safe

Driving to and from the hospital with the beast has kept my sanity.
Of course returning to my family is the best feeling but the drive releases all the tension.

Mostly I prefer a chill cruise with windows down to calm down... listening to the sound of the exhaust and intake/turbo.... but sometimes there are a few drivers that ask for it... Acuras, Volvos, BMWs, Mercs.... you name it... they all disappear in the mirror

A little present for myself.... Burnz Auto Carbon Fiber Key Cover
Link:
https://burnzauto.com/collections/ac...15-wrx-sti-brz

Nice Quality - easily opens and clicks onto the key. No imperfections.
Shipping was quick via DHL.

You can pick from three colors: Black, Red and Blue.
I like the more stealthy look as you guys already know so I went with black.
I was on the fence with Blue as to match the DIT emblem etc.

**I did purchase one of the prototypes as I did not want the Burnz Auto emblem on my key cover

Another upgrade time!

This time its the horns.

I have been using a quad setup of stock with hella supertones.

Grounding issues caused the Hellas to stop working almost 4 or how many years I had them on already (forget).

I decided its a good time for an upgrade of the stock horns to the JDM H3717VA010 horns.

H3717VA010 are trumpet style horns with 400Hz and 500Hz horns. A deeper and louder sound vs stock. Plug and play, even comes with the bracket that is already there so you get a free paperweight!

For the harness I use Lightwerkz custom hella horn harness

So the final result is louder and I like it!

Upgrade:

So time came to cleanup my taillights. I previously had custom vinyl wrapped taillights with xpel ultimate 35%.
Started to have minor issues on the edges etc so I thought lets clean it up.

I did not have to think hard where to go because my brother used Prodipper here in NYC on his Tesla Model 3 - so I knew the excellent work Philips provides.

I purchased a second set of OEM taillights and left them with Philips to do his magic - permanent smoke with clear coat and same design was the project.

Could not be any more happy with the results. Very well painted and my OCD was pleased - no imperfections whatsoever.
I highly respect Prodipper and would recommend over and over again. If you are in NYC don't hesitate, just make an appointment.

Just came back from a vacation in Massachusetts / Rhode Island.

WRX is doing great. Was nice hearing the recently upgraded stock horns to JDM horns together with the Hella Supertones.
Met a few 2015+ and other Subarus along the way, of course with mandatory wave/honk or light flash.

Brenton State Park, RI. Took the drive along the Ocean Drive Historic District - very nice.
Driving over the Mt Hope Bridge from Portsmouth to Bristol was nice as well.

WRX TR690 CVT Drain and Fill.

This was my second drain and fill on my car. I have helped numerous friends in NYC do it as well and guided a number of you via messenger. First time I drained about 6 quarts. This time was between 5-6. I usually have 8 quarts ready just in case. As you all know I have switched to Amsoil synthetic CVT fluid and have used it for a few years now. I am very happy with it and even more happy with seeing how it held up since the first drain and fill. I purchased four 1 quart bottles and one 1 Gallon jug (about 4 Quarts). I first used the Gallon jug and added more with each bottle depending on the amount required. As I drained the CVT fluid I was able to see it was still nice and golden. Some had much darker and even a bit milky cvt fluid come out. If you are using a black container, pour some fluid on a white towel or paper towel to assess the color - or even a bit into a clear plastic container. If it was so black and milky you know it was for sure a good idea to change the fluid. Up to five drain and fills can be done in a short period of time to get rid of most of the old fluid, especially if it was very dark and milky. Once you assess the condition of the fluid, then consider doing another drain and fill in the near future - maybe a few weeks or a few months. I waited a bit longer as my fluid looked very good the first time around - imo this was mostly due to adding a cvt cooler early in the life of my car. My cvt was already up to temp once I arrived at my friends shop (95-113F). I also monitored it during the procedure via my obdlink MX plus and active obd app on my android phone - you can do it on the Cobb AP as well. After the CVT fluid change there is a slight but noticeable butt dyno improvement to how the cvt behaves imo. I feel the amsoil fluid does a better job in allowing the chain to do its job. My friends have reported this as well with other cvt fluids in Japan compared to oem "orange" high torque CVT fluid. I have attached photos with arrows to indicate what is what. I am also attaching the photos from my diff fluid change (you can find the whole procedure in the main group of posts on my thread here. You do not want to add CVT fluid into your diff or vice versa. Your car will not be happy with you. So take your time! Always feel free to reach out to me here or on facebook

General procedure:
1. Open CVT fill plug (Some do this as first step in case they have a hard time opening it after draining cvt fluid)
2. Open Drain plug to drain CVT Fluid - usually about 5-6 quarts will drain (Best into a measuring container to assess amount drained)
3. Close Drain Plug
4. Start to fill CVTF via main fill plug (I return mostly the same amount that I drained)
5. Temporarily tighten fill plug
6. Idle engine to raise CVTF temp to 95-113F (35-45C)
7. Operate Lever in P-R-N-D and D-N-R-P to circulate CVTF while engine is idling
8. Add more CVT fluid until starts to drip out of the main fill plug
9. Close Fill Plug

Tightening Torque 50N-m (5.1 kgf-m, 36.9 fl-lb)

I started to update a lot of the main first posts on my page.

First I changed my NY state orange license plates to new excelsior...
I like the new look and they do not stand out like the previous orange one from miles away as "He is from NY"

Another new addition is an "all in one post" with various information
and links to some of my more important topics so you do not have to search for them too long

1. TR690 Drain and fill
2. Engine oil
3. Crank pulley
4. CVT cooler
etc etc

I changed post nr 2 and included this content there.

Happy 2021!

Time is moving fast and soon the beast will reach its 7th year anniversary

WRX is doing great. Now with two TR690 CVT fluid drain and fills behind me (you will have the details in post nr 2 with links).
No leaks. No slips of CVT. Amsoil CVT fluid is nice and golden. Cooler definitely helping (in bypass setup).
Power is more than enough for NYC area. Love this car

Today it was fun to watch a mazdaspeed3 try to keep up but eventually disappear in the mirrors as
I headed to the yearly family beach walk to welcome the new year.

I have moved away from being very active on the main CVT pages on fb that I am an admin of.
All has been said on there for the past 6+ years. Same topics come up over
and over again. I had enough. Thus decided to mainly focus on my page here

Glad to hear you love your car still. After following you for years and building up my own CVT WRX, I just never really fell in love w/ it. Some days more than others I guess. It treated me well & I had no issues after following all the good advice. I traded it recently after 5 years (longest I ever had any car).
I’ll continue to follow your thread though.
Happy 2021 to you as well!

Thanks. I'll probably still keep it for some time and will make these updates here and there. Eventually most likely I will jump to a Tesla. I really enjoy my brothers dual motor Model 3. All the best man

Tesla, huh? I’m not quite there yet.
I moved to an M240i coupe in sunset orange. Really digging it!
Keep up the nice work...and again, great thread!

Hi Bellipotens!

I came across this thread when deciding to opt into my CVT 18' WRX back last year.

After hearing from several friends that I made a big mistake not going with a manual for the WRX, I've decided it's time to embrace possibly adding some mods and tunes to my CVT.

I noticed you are from Queens, NY. I am too! Hopefully we can meet up one day and I can see your car for myself to further motivate me to keep the car. I didn't opt into a manual because my wife wasn't having it haha.

I love my car, it was my first car after taking public transportation my entire life for many many years. I do want to keep it. However, the stock power does feel too tamed at times and it leaves me wanting more.

I am considering limiting my power band to 300HP if I do decide to tune and mod. My question is, while it has been some time since you've been stock, just how visibly noticeable is the power difference from stock to wherever you're at now? Is it worth the additional money and possible defects that can come out of the CVT?

There are times I want to trade in for a manual or upgrade to an STI. After seeing some tuned CVT's I have hope that the car can put some more power out to not just give you more thrills when driving but compete with other cars on the road.

I see you have the STI SPT exhaust. I purchased my car used and it also came with it. I'm awaiting my muffler delete from Remark that I placed several months ago that's on backorder.

I'm also going to be replacing my C-Light with DD. Mine looks exactly like yours and I find it to be a little too dull for my liking. I'm curious to learn if I'll still need the DRL C-Light adapter. I'd like to share some pictures of my car with you and speak closer about what I can do to the car without breaking bank as I've recently been laid off.

Are you on the WRX subreddit btw?

Glad you liked the thread. Yes, I'm in Queens and part of the local Subaru Group. I am also often on LI. So you might bump into me one day

I would suggest you look at the second post on the thread where I list a lot of maintenance/power info.
https://forums.nasioc.com/forums/sho...97&postcount=2

1. Power
First do not go crazy on this topic. Especially do not start comparing dynos. It all depends on the dyno you will be on (if you do get a dyno tune).
Numerous variables are to be considered: weather, location (elevation), dyno settings, particular dyno being used etc. All this will influence the "numbers."

Too many over focus on this as they think this defines the car and how "well-tuned" it is. But it does not. Easy example is people claiming their numbers are almost 300hp at the wheels on a stock car (Somehow one car is magically stronger than the rest of the same ones from factory).

Also some fb rehashers claiming 300hp/300tq is the limit. the limit is what the tuner will tell you it is on the dyno you will be tuned on. That person has all the answers, no internet wannabe tuner. I had the pleasure to interact with some of these wannabe tuners and they get very nervous and overexcited when talking about this topic so best to stay away from that crowd. Also the ones throwing tuners donw your throat so they can tell the guy they sent a new customer their way and get something out of it, be it a better price next time they go or just improvement in their ego.

Look at where the car is at stock power (benchmark) and then how much gain it will make. Even then don't over focus on final numbers or peak numbers as the car does not live at peak numbers. The general curve is what matters and also longevity of the car - you might get the highest power out there but one week later you are replacing your transmission or something else.

Heat is the true killer of the CVT. It will lead to the cvt fluid becoming burnt and then not functioning properly leading to premature parts wear or even failure. Seals around the pan also will fail due to overheating. Sure power can also cause the CVT to slip but heat is the nr 1 killer imo.

2. General power talk out of the way.. let's chat parts

Supporting mods as CVT cooler are critical when adding power. Also eventually checking and changing the CVT fluid (Its not a lifetime fluid).

I would go TMIC (Not FMIC). An upgraded TMIC is good to have over stock for various reasons - such as increased time to heat soak. Grimmpseed TMIC is great. I have RacerX but they no longer make them I believe.

Upgraded Intake (mishimoto)- I have seen an increase of power with it - some have not. I also felt it helped tweak numbers more with the general tune.

I would recommend a fluidampr pulley as its one of the best parts on the car imo for longevity of the engine.

3. Paint protection - Highly recommend ceramic coating early on and a front bumper paint protection. Subaru paint is fragile. Ceramic coating will repel dust etc and make washing the car a breeze. Also when applies to wheels the brake dust does not stick. Pricey but well worth it to do it professionally and then use a ceramic spray to touch up once in a while. KS Detailing on LI is superb for ceramic, I had him detail the car and apply cquartspro. Paint protection film or film spray would be by prodipperNYC aka Philips now in LIC. My brother had the while car film sprayed in ear but you can have various colors etc. A sort of more advanced plastic dip.

4. Lights - go check out lightwerkz in NJ. I had them do my lights. They do a phenomenal job and the reseal job is perfect as I never had condensation issues etc. They do all sorts of custom stuff. I kept mine looking like the JDM model. I like a "oem +" look.

5. STI Performance exhaust - I have Version 1 and had it port installed (early release for the 2014-2015 "2015 WRX") They changed it a bit for Version 2. I love it. It's just the right sound for me, especially when adding a downpipe. Not obnoxious and can be handled on long trips (I do plenty of those). I also added a vibrant bottle resonator to refine the sound. No rust or other issues with it. I did eventually correct the sag that it tends to have with the aftermarket exhaust hangers "yellows." Its easy to make this FA20 sound like a WW2 truck with some of the aftermarket exhausts or muffler deletes***8230; I wanted a deeper refined tone and this exhaust delivered. To me it's a hidden gem that people sometimes like to let go for below $500. Lol.

6. Manual Transmission talk - Do what works for you. There are plenty of guys who need to make themselves feel better by saying they can drive stick. The rest of the world drives stick and does not think of it as being something special. I really just came across this here in the US - people thinking its special. I learned to drive stick on dirt roads of Poland near my hometown in various cars like the Polish Fiat 126p, Citroen 2CV, BMW 2002tti etc. I do not look down at people due to what transmission they use etc. After seeing a good amount of poor posts from the "manual crowd" on some of the 2015 wrx/sti fb pages it shows that driving a manual does not make you take care of your care better, drive better, prevent you from making the car look or sound like an old truck etc. I think this FA20 and high torque cvt (TR690) combo works well. I hated how the 6MT felt and if I ever wanted to go manual I would jump on the STI, but then again I do not want the old EJ. We also have continuous boost in the CVT. The FA20 and CVT combo was how it was released for the first time in Japan with the 2012 JDM Legacy DIT. Drive what makes you happy, you paid for it and you are driving it. Taking care of the car properly, automobile knowledge, driving skills and etiquette on the street is what matters to me over a transmission choice. For NYC I think it's great and I get a good amount of fun from it.

pm me if you have more questions

Another year passes by...

7 years ago on this date I picked her up from Manchester Subaru in New Hampshire.

Drove back to NY via ferry from CT to Orient point and then hit a very strong thunderstorm with minimal visibility.
She performed exceptionally well. Perscitus lead the way in his 3.6R Legacy.
Numerous trips around the East coast since then in different weather conditions from heavy snow to warm summer days.

Overall a very positive experience until now. Thankful how well she has held up.

Two CVT fluid drain and fills with amsoil CVT fluid. Engine also doing well with Rotella T6 5w40 and also with one of my favorite parts... the fluidampr! Well worth the money.

CVT Cooler helps a ton imo with the longevity of the tranmission and keeping the fluid from becoming burnt that leads to a number of issues.

Maintenance and upgrade time

So time came to upgrade my tires. Also decided to widen a bit from 235 to 245

1. Vredestein Quatrac Pro 245/40R18 GT-tires
2. TSB for strut mount (changed both strut mounts) - I had some popping with hard left turns - no more
3. Mandatory wheel balance and alignment (All done at AZP)

Very happy with the purchase and their performance.
Special thanks to AZP Installs for all the work (Mike, Alex, Gilbert, Manny)
They are a TireRack dealer so can get the tires for you shipped there for online price

I love to go to AZP - they know their Subaru's. Glad to have them in the tri-state area

Great reviews for a reason!

Now about the tires. I have read and heard a good amount about them from Europe.
Numerous friends back in Europe switched to them and raved how good they are. Well, they were right.
I was looking at Crossclime + and Goodyear Vector but sadly Goodyear vector is not available here and
Crossclimate + did not come in the size I wanted.

Cornering and overall handing is superb in dry and wet conditions. Stopping as well with acceleration grip.
I am excited what they will bring in winter but given their current performance with the reviews my friends
and pros back in Europe gave, all I can say I'm excited to see.

I remember using AZP back in the day with my BRZ. Cool bros for sure. Thanks for the update on your ride!
