I have a 2015 WRX, 6MT, Premium trim. A few weeks ago I started noticing a very annoying rattling sound under the dash tweeter on the driver's side. Sounds like something tapping against a hard plastic. It is only noticeable when the car is vibrating slightly and constantly. For example, when cruising on semi rough pavement at 50 mph. Another example would be if I'm in 2nd go up to around 4,500 RPMs, release the accelerator and let the car cruise... So far I have removed the tweeter and its cover, and the plastic trim covering the fusebox which contains the button to open the trunk. I haven't been able to pinpoint it... It still does it without those parts. Once you notice it you can't un-hear it. Has any of you experienced this? Any ideas? I'm extremely frustrated!!! This is a 30K brand new car!!! Thanks in advance for your help!

I'm having the exact same type of issue on my car. I thought it was an out-of-balance tire and I was due to replace them anyway so I did. I went back and had them recheck the balancing and they said took all weights off and rebalanced, issue still persists. Can't for the life of me figure out what's causing it but I'd like to avoid hundreds of dollars spent for the dealership to find nothing.

You could have a tire that is not quite perfectly circular. Its really hard to check but will cause vibrations at speed. Only way to fix is replacement

Normally I would agree with that but I had the issue before and after I replaced the tires.

Have the tire/rim road force balanced. This process will match the tire and rim so the heavy spot on the rim matched the light spot on the tire. They then rebalance.
I was told by the tire shop that they were road force balancing. Tech took me out to shop and said look. The screen showed that the tire needed to be moved to a certain spot around the rim. I asked what the screen meant and the "ass-hat's" reply was "I don't know". I promptly took it to a different shop and they actually did the road force balance right. Two out of 4 tires had to be moved round on rim. |

You could also have a tire that's no longer circular (happened to me) due to damage, or very slight bend in the wheel. Usually this can be balanced out. |

I'm having the same issue. I can tell something is off balance at 65+. My brakes shudder when I brake from 60mph also. My wheels were recently roadforced, so not that. I'm thinking wheel bearing or hub issue?

Not likely its a wheel bearing. |

Aftermarket or stock wheels? If they're aftermarket try a new set of hub rings. Relatively cheap. Seemed to help for me.

I'm running aftermarket wheels. You mean hub centering rings? I'll give that a shot...
No, I haven't tried bedding in the pads, I'm not sure how. If you're talking about being easy on the brakes when I first got my car a year ago, I was? sc00by, how would I check my tierods exactly if my car is up on jackstands? Sorry for al the noob questions, it's just that this issue is driving me nuts and the dealer isn't helping at all. Thanks in advance.. |

So after some more research, maybe stuck/sticky caliper pins? I'm going to get my car up on stands this weekend and check again how freely the wheels spin. What should I be looking for? No contact whatsoever from pad to rotor? Or is some drag normal? I really wanna diagnose this problem asap. Driving me nuts.

I would guess you have a bent wheel.
I can't imagine after 2 tire changes and 2 mounting/balancing's you would still be having the same issue. Also hub centering rings will help. when i put my lugnuts on it put them on by hand until they are all evenly snug in the bevels and go around the star pattern 2 times, half tight then full tight to keep the wheel perfectly centered on the studs/nuts. there have been a few times where i would go to get tires changed and wheels would balance fine but still shake on the highway. found out by pulling over and removing each wheel and re-tightening my way and then getting back on the highway. when they blast the lug nuts on 1 at a time with the impact it doesn't give the rim room to shift while tightening the other lug nuts if it is off center. |

I've had a strange vibration in my 2015 sti as well. Balancing, tires, road force, nor alignment would fix it. Seems there is an issue with the power steering. The lines to the rack can start to weep fluid where they are in a plastic hold down clamp, not enough to see a puddle, but enough to cause air to get sucked into the system. This will wipe out the rack and pump, but without a whine. They found this out when I brought it in again for the loose feeling and vibration. First they replaced the lines, but the fluid was still bubbling. So they replaced the pump, but could not seem to get the rack to feel right (had feedback) feeling like it was being hydraulically loaded and unloaded, as if the the high pressure fluid was pulsing. So with it on the lift and running, they noticed the wheels pulsating left and right (Vibration FOUND). This makes sense as to why it felt like a wheel balance, out of round, or bent rim issue, because the vibration would happen randomly at varying speeds and more so when cold. So a new rack is on the way
So if you get a vibration, check the rack lines for weeping or wetness, your power steering system could be wiped out due to air intrusion. |

Having the same vibration issue over 50 mph. If I can't solve it, I will sell the car. Does the WRX have the rack steering at the sti?

My 2014 Crosstrek has that same on/off vibration you all been describing since 12K miles. 3 dealerships say it feels like a Crosstrek, no trouble found. Independent shop alignments, road force balance, new Conti tires, new front rotors and brake pads all around. Nothing fixes it. endless component checks...50K on the car and I'm waiting to test drive a 6 speed manual VW Alltrack. After 20 years of owning Subarus, this ones the last and it's the lousy dealership service that is pushing me away.
The Crosstrek was sold with 75K miles on it..... the vibrations were CVT related. Last edited by VSurfn; 05-11-2020 at 01:06 AM. |

I have the same issue with my 2015 WRX. At higher speeds above 65 you can visually watch the passenger seat head rest begin to shake and shimmy. The vibration isn't in the steering wheel necessarily. The vehicle had winter tires on the car. I purchased brand new Toyo Proxes 4 Plus tires and new wheels (3 weeks old btw). The vibration was still present. I am swapping tires out tomorrow with new tires, another brand, Cooper tires (RS3-G1). The tires/wheels were balanced several times and road force balanced as well. I have taken the WRX to two dealers, both could not identify the issue and pointed their fingers at the tires. Alignment was checked, play in the bearings and CV's were checked. If the different brand of new tires don't fix the issue then I am contacting Subaru of America.
Also noticed fluid leaking from the front differential seal. Dealer said it was the drain plug and needs interval service, not warranty service. I didn't see any oil coming from the drain plug, so now I feel that I have to prove that its not the drain plug so they can address the real issue at first, not just make 250 bucks from a differential service and then turn around and say "ohh yea, your right, it is the seal, gee wiz, imagine that". The more and more I deal with Subaru's service team, the less confidence I have in some regards. The majority of techs are awesome, but I am seeing a lot of assumptions with little desire to actually roll the sleeves up and dig into the problem, along with finger pointing, and lack of effort into process of elimination and thinking outside of the box. I had a 2013 CrossTrek that consumed oil like crazy. I was told that it was normal by the dealer. The word normal is a relative term. They were right, it was normal for an engine that had messed up rings to burn oil. After going around and around, Subaru finally decided to replace the rings, and guess what, the problem went away. Shortly after, I received a letter in the mail notifying me of the class action lawsuit regarding the CrossTrek's and oil consumption. |

Bumping this old thread but did anyone ever figure out the causes? Can't figure out what I feel is a constant vibration. Definitely feel it at low speeds and faster but the vibration feels like it's a constant speed. While I get some steering wheel shimmy the vibration short of resonates in the steering wheel itself instead of the steering wheel itself shimmying. Not tires not balancing. Had two different sets of wheels and tires and no change. Rotation didn't help either. Also noticed a clunking when letting out the clutch and I don't feel my car rolling back as much when on a slight include. Sort of feels like the wheels are locking. I don't see abnormal pad wear but I need to take off the calipers, open the bleeders and push in the pistons to make sure they're working. Starting to suspect the caliper slide pins may be getting stuck. On my passeger front I see the imprint of the brake pad on the rotor, like it's skipping on the rotor.
Took it to the dealer and they of course say it's normal ***55358;***56611; I'm at 13k miles on my 2018 wrx |

I have a 2013 WRX hatch, ~125,000 miles. I recently experienced vibration issues as well, and I would recommend checking your sway bar bushings. Mine were probably a bit more worn than some of the 2015+ models, but worn sway bar bushing can cause inconsistent vibrations. If they are worn, your car might ride smoothly until something excites the suspension. I've read, and it seems to check out, vibrations in the steering wheel might indicate front bushings, and vibration in the seat indicates rear bushings. I replaced front and rear bushings, as well as endlinks and that seemed to fix my problem. One thing I would recommend, make sure you torque endlinks to proper specs. After market links seem to like higher than stock torques, and if it's not tight enough, you might notice a knocking that's similar to worn ball joints.

To make things worse from what I've seen in the factory service manual you are supposed to have the trans out of the car and in it's side to be able to check the backlash. It seems like a simple procedure to check but obviously if I take the trans off myself I can kiss my warranty good bye. So I'm under a rock and a hard place at the moment. I am going to send picture of the leaking oil seal to my service advisor and see what they say. |
