Ok I'll give it a go.

This may be bad form to link to another board, but the OP has another thread going at http://www.wrxforums.com/forums/10-s...range-fix.html that has pics from other members and some deeper info. Thanks for getting this going 99pgpgt.

To go a step farther for the people that don't choose to follow the link skifreak has shared of my other forum thread, here are the pictures of the exposed wiring harness showing the ground wires and the connection where it needs to be soldered.

Bringing a thread back from dead. I'm hoping this is my fix. I have been getting random misfires for a couple of weeks now. Last week it was 1,3,and 4 cleared the codes later that week it was just cylinder 3 but the roughness on all cylinder counts were high. This week its Cylinder 1 and 4 and my CEL popped up literally seconds after I started my car that morning. I sure hope this is it.

2014 WRX w/ P0300 and intermittent rough idle.

Dealer has harness on order. I have my fingers crossed.

Cheers,

Wanted to share my results to help folks out. It was going to be a $1000 job to replace the wiring harness on my 2011 WRX. I did the soldering fix and the car has been running great so far (1 week, which is a huge improvement). Will keep monitoring.

For a bit more detail on the root of the problem, you can read about the revised wiring harness that is the official fix.

This is driving me bonkers. Probably happens to me once a week. Car is running absolutely fine but this damn code gets thrown. Probably the most annoying thing about it is that I can't use cruise control and the dash looks like a damn christmas tree.

Bringing this thread back to the top as I've just encountered this problem in my 13. It has 72k miles and i just got the code a couple of weeks ago. The car doesn't run/idle choppy and it doesn't appear to be misfiring. After bringing it to Suburban Subaru, they determined that the wiring harness is the issue, and when they wiggled the harness, the engine began to misfire. SOA is refusing to cover this and say that it isn't a widespread issue yet. Any thoughts on this? Has anyone else had this covered by SOA? i Feel SOA should be liable for a faulty wiring harness, whether it takes 5k miles for it to happen or 70k miles, a wiring harness isn't a wear and tear item. I even have extended warranty and they denied coverage. FYI, they want $1000 to fix this problem, $380 for the harness and the rest labor.

You're not under warranty. It's a pretty simple concept. You can always make a case to Subaru and try to get some assistance. You did, they denied helping you since you're out of warranty and they aren't obligated to assist you. Suck it up buttercup and pay the bill. They owe you nothing.

It takes like 20 minutes to unwrap the wiring harness and put a drop of solder on the problematic***8203; connection...

Going to be doing this to mine tomorrow. Someone actually told me about in on instagram of all places.

I've been throwing phantom cylinder misfire codes for a week now. Each time is a different cylinder or the p0300 random code.

No signs/feelings of a misfire. 100% throttle response. Just randomly turning the CEL light on when it feels like it.

Lets see if I am one of the lucky(unlucky) ones.

So my 2011 has been misfiring at idle lately and I wandered upon this and the WRXForums thread.

I wiggled/flexed the harness while the shuddering was going on and it definitely has an affect. Guess I'll be un-looming it and cleaning all the pins and soldering that crimp...

My car is back at subaru for a p0300. Was there 3 weeks ago for the same cel. They replaced the wire harness, cel came back in a week ago. Got a call from them saying everything so far checks out, but will keep the car a few more days to check more out.

My 2013 WRX got the P0300 first time about a year ago (November 2016) at 80,000 miles. It cleared itself before I did anything, but I ran some Techron and Heat through the tank and cleaned the MAF.

It popped up again at the 90,000 service in May this year. The dealer kept it and said they found an intake manifold leak and replaced the gaskets.

Popped up a third time October 2017 a little over 100,000 miles. I cleaned the MAF again, cleared it, and it came back. It's at the dealer now because I wanted them to fix it right (at their expense) if they didn't do it right the first time. They called and said manifold gaskets are fine, not leaks, and now they need to check valve clearance (sounds like valve lash) for 3 hours labor, if bad pull engine (!) and adjust valves.

I haven't gotten an answer yet as to any troubleshooting of the wire harness ground issue. I have asked the service writer, and was told I need to talk to the service manager. But the service writer said they called Subaru Field Tech Service and they said to check the valves.

I should have done the wire harness ground solder fix myself first, just to see if it worked. I'd like them to at least rule that out before doing exploratory surgery.

I really don't see how the valve lash gets smaller over time, as stuff wears, lash increases. And I don't see how it would affect all cylinders randomly with misfires.

I've been having this issue for about 30K now. Where it would only show up every 10K, now its showing up every 2K.

Error P0300 / PFFFE.

Every single time I have to reset the ECU to clear the CEL.

Yesterday I actually drove with the CEL on in LIMP Mode and oddly it still achieved boost and ran very normal. I had the AP and didn't notice any adverse events during LIMP mode.

This morning I reset the ECU, but it's annoying b/c then it loses all of its learned parameters.

Disclosure, the short block was replaced at 60K (due to dealer negligence) which shortly there after this started occurring. I don't know if something happened with the wiring harness during this process.

So I'm looking at doing this solder fix to my wiring harness as well. My question is, is it just the one joint in the harness or are there multiple joints that need to be soldered? Thanks

Hey all,
This issue has been happening to me. Getting the P0300 code although the car drives fine. Dealer hasn't been able to indicate what the issue is. They just replaced the wiring harness, and 2 days later the code is back on. At this point they are recommending an engine tear down, "as it could have a tight valve clearance or a burnt out valve."

This issue started with my car at ~50k miles, and has been showing up intermittently for the past 15k miles.

Anyone have any other thoughts or experiences with this, beyond what a wiring harness replacement would fix?

Seems like a very simple fix that can eliminate a lot of hassle. What I'm wondering though is if anyone's crimp at that location was actually loose, as in you could wiggle or slide the crimp. It appears to be several shields that share one ecu ground, for engine sensors. Just be sure to solder it well, hot enough so the solder flows into the joint and bonds well.

Valve lash can decrease as the valves settle further into the seats, that's why it's a great idea to get a valve adjustment if you can swing it. I've seen it happen on vehicles with way fewer miles than yours, sometimes the clearances are set on the close side from the factory and after settling in they are way too tight. Can cause misfires at cold starts and if they are really tight it will continue after warm. The clearance being too low also causes an overall loss of power. I'm actually planning on checking clearances on my built motor after around 30k to see if they've dropped enough to worry about.

Wouldn't there be a pretty obvious difference in the way the car is driving if this was really happening (ie not a faulty sensor, but actual misfires)? Something like a big difference in power, car sputtering or obviously running rough...?

Default Lost.

About 8 or 9 months ago I had a very similar misfire problem, I had the codes for cyl 1 misfire and coil a. I replaced the coil, and changed all sparkplugs. No change. Ran across this page, and tried the fix, worked at first, but now after these 8 or so months, it has appeared again. I tried adding more solder, as well as changing the spark plugs again thinking maybe I gapped them wrong (or didn't put NGK's in), but to no avail. I've now been driving with the misfire for about 2k miles, and the strange thing is how absolutely inconsistent it is. I went 2 weeks out of the blue without a hitch. I went a week where I didn't go more than 2 hours without it missing. My only thoughts are either there's possibly another ground point that's maybe come loose as well, or perhaps it's because it only has one fuel filter in the fuel tank, which I would imagine is nothing more than just a sock to catch the big stuff. I may at some point pull the tank, depending on my findings. If anybody knows anything, please, I'm just a broke 21 year old trying to save some money so I can keep driving the car I love and not have to give it up for good.

There is a fuel filter built into the pump housing that sits in the fuel tank,( under your back seat-easily accessible ), along with a "pre-filter" sock on the pump itself.

It's pretty easy to change, search on here and you'll find a write up with part #'s.

Next month will be a year with this issue. Went off for a long time came back on. replaced the only thing i replaced to begin with. Spark plugs. When the cell came back on before i replaced the plugs again, it was misfiring 2,3,4. and that pfffe. So far after replacing plugsw no issues. I have been monitoring the roughness cycle of each cylinder to see if any keep on running. Hasnt come back up, losing hope here. lol

Some background info:
I have had my 13 wrx since new. I did notice some hard start issues in winter and by doing the soldering fix (as per photos above) seemed to help. This was a few years ago. The rough idle dips slowly crept in as described by many people. It was getting worse this spring to an almost predictable level.... like when the car was heat soaked after my drive home. Some times the car would just sound like it was misfiring. Never triggered a CEL but I checked anyway and pulled a P0451.

THE FIX:
I found a thread on clubwrx that cought my attention where a poster said his mechanic "He removed and replaced a butt connector, which is part of the engine wiring harness. The connector joins a Black/Yellow wire to 4 wires."

So this crimp is in the same bundle off harness as the fix above. There is a single black/yellow wire that joints four black/yellow wires. Its warped up good. Once I unwrapped it I found a bunch of black tar paste under the tape. You will need to clean it off. Q-tips soaked in brake cleaner worked for me. Remove and re-crimp with cleaned wires. Add solder with a nice hot soldering iron (40W minimum). You want to heat this up so solder flows in. Protect wires below from solder of course..... Tape everything back up.

The car now idles at a steady 800 rpm. No more dips or misfires since the fix and it has been three weeks with many hot days in between. Knock on wood. Feels like its driving better too but that could be in my head.

Anyway give this a try guys if your still looking for a solution.

Hey guys!

I have a 2014 WRX hatch and have had multiple misfires in different cylinders after changing my spark plugs. Took it to the dealer and they tried to tell me that I needed a new short block and that it was ring land failure. RO states that the mis went from 2 to 4, then none. Also wanted to charge me $400 to do a cylinder leak down and compression test. They reset the ECU and said it ran fine.

I took my car back home, flashed my Stage 1 +, then had a miss in cylinder 1. I did both tests with no abnormal numbers. Reset my ECU with my AP and data logged every drive. Code came up while sitting in the parking lot. This time miss was in cyl 3.

Reset it again and am not getting any codes but it is running like crap. Talked to some people at COBB Tuning and they pointed me to the TSB for a ground relocation. Common on 2012-2014 WRX.

Here are the part numbers I found for this TSB. TSB is 07-96-15. I am not covered under warranty so it is going to be $400 for the harness and 6 hours labor.

HARNESS-ENGINE

24020AF531: 2013-14MY WRX & Forester Turbo

Hope this helps anyone else that is having issues with random misfires.
