Get a MediaMVP for $95 at CompUSA and you're done. It even comes with the A/V cables.

iTunes can eat poo and die for all I care.

I think the average consumer is only getting into the DVR thing, now you throw downloading tv (whut? the tv comes from the cable), plus you add in cables and other crap, then charge $300 for it and there's a collective *crickets*

Even the hardcore Apple fans I know haven't said squat about this -- it's all iPhone, all the time. I thought it was already out, myself.

We have 2 TiVo's, they do most of this stuff anyway, getting the programs off the cable for "free" and Netflix brings us the movies.

Sorry man, the free market doesn't deal with apples DRM.

Just move all your iTunes songs into a folder and link it to that folder. I have tons of music and because I have an iPod I have to use iTunes. I don't have a designated folder, I have a "Music" folder on my desktop, in that is hundred of folders, each of those is named according to "Artist - Album" so I can easily find what I am looking for. I drag each of those I want iTunes to deal with into iTunes. Some of that music I don't want on my ipod.

I don't know why people watch video with itunes, I also don't know why they buy it from apple. But do whatever you want.

Personally, I like the extra functionality that iTunes (and other DB-based tools) gives you for organizing, filtering, searching and editing the metadata of your files. A directory-based system (which iTunes still uses, btw) has its limitations.

Idjiit - Do you have wireless?

If you are looking for a way to just play music downstairs, the airport express units will connect to your wireless network and then output a music stream to speakers or a receiver. You just need to have a computer running iTunes on the wireless network somewhere in the house to control it.

I don't think AppleTV is going to cut it for me. Some of my stuff is in iTunes (The State and The Office), but I'm still going to get most of my media from other places. I think I need a real hardcore HTPC. It could be a Mac Mini or it could be something like one of those Shuttle barebones PCs.

I already have a way to play music/videos on my TV - plug in my iPod (which I do). I'm more interested in having a "media center" or whatever you want to call it. A way to browse stuff on the TV. Conceptually, I'm definitely a candidate for an Apple TV but it's too expensive.

Yep, that's why I'm thinking Mac Mini or HTPC that sits right next to the TV.

I already have a Network Attached Storage box up in my office to be a central repository for media and my house is wired for 100MB/s ethernet.

Personally I like using my own directory based solution best for now, and programs like Media Monkey work better than iTunes I find (and are more responsive & efficient) with varying organizational systems.

Yeah, that's what we'll most likely end up doing. The Mini I'm typing on is probably going to be replaced with a higher-spec one to manage our photo library for the photo biz, so this one will end up being used more like an HTPC. I reckon it's only a matter of time before you can get a Blu-Ray external drive for the Mini, so in the long run it makes more sense.

Only bummer with that is that this Mini doesn't have an ir port/remote, so... may not work out.

Eh, I find the little Mac remotes to be much more useful for this sort of thing. It's nice to be sitting on the couch working and just hit previous/next, play/pause and turn the volume up and down without having to actually look at anything.

Anyone know if you absolutely have to have an 802.11n wireless connection, even just for music?

EDIT: Apple site says G or N for video.

well it seems its been hacked already

perian is now able to be ran off the device which means there is now support for

Quote:
* AVI and FLV
* 3ivX, DivX, Flash Screen Video, MS-MPEG4, Sorenson H.263, Truemotion VP6, and Xvid
* AVI support for: AAC, AC3 Audio using A52Codec, H.264, MPEG4, and VBR MP3
http://perian.org/

Quote:
Hey, Sabretooth and I just officially got xvid/everything else supported by Perian working on the Apple TV.

I promise you this image is legit and this is an episode of Lost encoded in Xvid (FAKE FAKE RAHGHG FAKE):

We're doing a writeup, but the short of it is...

1. Open it up (4 screws on the bottom, small Torx bit)
2. Put the 2.5" drive into a USB enclosure or whatever you want
3. Mount the HFS filesystem
4. Install Perian in /Library/Quicktime (as you normally would)
5. Install Dropbear (or enable SSH if you know how... we gave up and used Dropbear)
6. Add a startup script to disable the firewall or open up the ports you need for SSH
7. Put the drive back in and boot it, ssh login as frontrow, password frontrow (or add an ssh key for yourself)
8. Use a reference movie (use QT Pro to save a reference movie) to bootstrap your xvid file

voila

Should see a writeup later today.

potentially all of the content in a user's itunes library could be non-DRMed. all of the movies in my collection are that way save for the free tv show pilot episodes that come up here and there on itms. how? bittorrent, and then iSquint to convert the movies to h.263.

however, i agree with the earlier posters that the apple tv really, really needs the itms to cough up some HD content.

Idj, I'm not sure this will work with a Mac, but you may want to dig up some info on a USB-UIRT.

http://www.usbuirt.com/

I have one to control my HTPC and to have my HTPC control my digital cable box. If the Mac Mini has a USB port (which I'm pretty sure it does), it's possible that someone's put together a driver for it for OSX or whatever. It's compatible with most any IR remote.

So... anyone end up buying one of these things? Seems like a total flop. Althought I'm sitting here thinking how it would be easiest to get my iTunes library to my TV, which is about 50 feet away, without stretching an audio cable across the room since my $400 HD-A2 is apparently incapable of playing a CD without skipping.

Will just plug in my iPod, I guess.

Nope. I think Apple is heading towards the downfall they had in the 90's when they tried to make everything. They got lucky with the iPod basically, and are now branching off into stuff they don't really know. The iPhone doesn't look good either, too expensive and no real extra features.
