Default No Apple TV thread = Fail?

Sounds like this is a product so utterly uninspiring that no one has even bothered to start a thread slamming it amidst the all the pr today...?

I predict a failure.

No 1080p is the failure. If you could download high definition movies from itunes and stream them to your HD TV, it would be an excellent product.

So what exactly does it do? It is a DVR/Slingbox/download-center type of device?

Isn't it just kinda the same thing as an XB360? I mean, once IPTV is up and running...

Basically just an easy way to (wirelessly or wired) get everything from your iTunes library to your TV. So you can flip through music, TV shows and movies easily.

I haven't got any interest in it because of poor format support and iTunes dependencies. I'm still not sure if it can simply just stream media as any computer or say modded xbox can.

For what it claims to do, I'd buy the XB360 and use the software it uses and then be able to play games too.

all in all, it does seem to be pretty underwhelming

Yeah, correct me if I'm wrong but it looks like it maxes out at 720p? Do you know what the actual resolution of the output is? The specs at Apple.com are a little confusing.

What res does it play back at? I remember i downloaded a few episodes of Lost last season, and even blowing the window up to the size of my screen (17" iMac), the picture was grainy and low quality.

I can't imagine how bad that would look on my 42" LCD.

Or a Mac Mini and have the ability to play DVDs, browse the web, etc. If you're into iTunes, that is. That's probably what we'll do since we already have one kicking around.

I concur.

The iPhone looks quite amazing and is a product that can easily be described... this Apple TV thingy, not so much... (even if it turns out to be a good product)

If the Mac Mini were any less money there'd really be no compelling reason to own the Apple TV (if there is a reason now).

I'll eventually be using my old desktop as an HTPC.

I got my mini for $350 new. It's bare bones and not an intel model, but it can't get any cheaper than that really.

I can see where they're coming from though. It's an ease of use thing - you plug it into your TV, you select the library you want to tap into and you're done. You don't have to boot the thing, etc. If it was $150, I'd probably get one just so I could easily listen to music downstairs. But $300? Nah.

Seems like we're likely to see an even further stripped-down one that doesn't have any local storage. Basically just a UI and a wireless connection to your library, that's it.

I almost think that would have made more sense, then they could drop the price more and people would be more interested in it.

Less than that, I'm afraid... It streams your crap from iTunes. So whatever you may have bought on iTunes, plus your music, plus any videos you happen to have in the H.264 format. Streams it all to your TV. Useful? You be the judge...

Also, no AV cables in the box? You have got to be kidding me. I can't wait for all the stupid fanboys to try and justify THAT decision.

Go ahead, kids. Lower my post rating. You still know I'm right.
that kind of sums it up...seems like a waste to me, I thought it would be an HD TV/Itunes/Media device streamer and even give you streaming to your cell phone via Slingbox type idea. combine all of what i just mentioned in a device...and you got a hell of a market cornered

not using softwares to manage libraries is a very nice thing for streaming media IMO

It should just see the folder and be able to identify playable files and then play them

I'd rather have a 360 that connects to my PC with everything, can play divx, dvds and everything else on my computer. Hey, it also plays games too!
