Just got home from seeing it, and loved it. It's beautiful. Villeneuve's aesthetic is just fantastic. Unfortunately, however, the theater had a lamp behind the screen go out or something, because it was so damn dark that some scenes where barely visible. I complained and now we have free passes to see it again.

Saw it in IMAX tonight, and it was astounding. Visually incredible start to finish and if you are a fan of the books it's so emotionally satisfying to see it brought to life in such an incredible detailed way.

My only critique is that so much of the time is spent on the gorgeous visuals and showing (not telling) the main plot points that alot of the details that set up the final conflict in the book feel omitted to streamline the storytelling.

As someone who has read the books a dozen times that's no loss but I'm interested to see how Part II handles some of the visions and Bene Gesserit parts and if people less familiar will understand what's going on.

Go see it in IMAX if you can, or at least in a theater. I'm sure I'll watch it again this week HBO max though I know it won't be quite as satisfying.

Yup. I worry it's not going to land well for non Dune/heavy sci-fi fans. However, it's pretty clear what the movie's going to be about, so audiences should know what they're getting into. As for an epic sci-fi, it was pretty epic. The CGI was very good, and if you watch the extras on max or youtube, they did a ton of it on real sites/sets. The sound was great also, not the score, but the clarity/effects of the sound. As far as I could tell, there wasn't really a score at all, just some really basic background music sometimes.

The screenplay completely skipped over a few pretty important details, like not even mentioned at all, which I found kinda odd considering some of the other stuff that was heavily focused on.

I still don't like the casting for Stilgar (omg just looked up the SyFy Stilgar, now THATS bad casting lol), or how Jessica is portrayed (acted fine, maybe it's the direction/writing).

Dune 85 was SO stylish (and the SyFy mini-series's) that, while visually grand, the movie lacks...flair, maybe - dialogue and visuals. I dunno, like it just didn't pop for me, but was certainly epic.

Denis said he was glad he didn't shoot his films back to back. Let's see if the gamble pays off.

"Denis Villeneuve is glad he didn't shoot Dune 1 & 2 back-to-back" https://www.joblo.com/dune-2-denis-villeneuve-2/amp/

There were definitely some very dark scenes, might be tough to watch during the day at home.

Agree with some of the other comments, Jessica seems overly emotional for a Bene Gesserit but they hardly go into any background of their training, and even less for the Mentat, Suk Doctors, ect. or mentioned why there's no computers. I don't think more exposition is the answer but it is interesting to see what all was cut.

Which is what's really hard about trying to do Dune as a movie, even with how short the story was in the 2.5 hours there, they had to leave a lot out.

I think if they continue it though, it leaves room to do background story films to cover those topics.

Really enjoyed it myself - I avoided any trailers/spoilers/etc so I was getting antsy about 1.5 hours in going "are they going to shove the whole rest of the story in 30 minutes? It's not enough time!"

It looked and sounded really, really good in Dolby Vision and Atmos. Definitely one to buy on disc. Glad I didn't pay to see it in the theater, though. Theres no theater around here that would have matched this visually.

Also, I would have felt bad for nodding off for a few minutes at about the 2 hour mark.

As a book reader, I loved it. Couple thoughts.

I really like the Baron. They did his suspensor orbs without being cheesy. He's also fat but oddly ripped, traps like Goldberg.

Piter was basically written out of the movie, which I understand, you can't cram it ALL in there.

The spacing guilds ship was amazing, they really showed the sense of scale, it's HUGE. Also, they showed it acting as a sort of wormhole, with that half-planet peeking through the other side. Loved it. Also loved that the guild representatives were more humanoid that vagina mouthed blobs hot boxing in a fish tank.

Vladimir was pretty awesome. He actually seemed properly menacing and cold. Not the weird foppish comic that Lynch made him. And I say this as a guy who really liked the Lynch film.

Also, did I miss it, or did they cut out the sleeper must awaken quote from Leto?

I watched all the extras on HBOmax, which were little 2-4 minute featurette kinda deals offering some cast commentary. Among them there were some iconic lines that were filmed, but apparently cut from the theatrical release.

Hopefully the directors cut includes some of that stuff. Also, one of them goes over the scoring, which I now understand what was going on. There really isn't a soundtrack, not like a traditional film, but the work put in to create the movie sound was pretty amazing. Zimmer was creating unique instruments and sounds to make it sound alien.

Agree on the baron, he's done really well. If you have read some of the more recent books, he used to be super jacked so even while uber fat, having a bunch of muscle underneath makes sense.

Hard to say too much more without being spoilery. I'll probably watch it again before it goes off of HBO.

I apparently forgot to crosspost my thoughts here:

Dune.

Spectacular. The sounds! Voice. The feeling of loss. The vastness and desolate nature of Arrakis.

And Lady Jessica just kills it.

So good. I loved it, and will definitely make another trip out to see it in Dolby Cinema just to bathe in it.

Dolby Cinema > IMAX Digital, for the record, so unless your local joint is a legit IMAX 24/70 setup then go t AMC instead and pick the Dolby Cinema screen.

Yeah, I always heard it pronounced as "Har-Ko-Nen", but this movie pronounces it as "Harkin-in". I'm glad it wasn't just me who was thrown off.

IMAX showing was pretty good. I don't completely agree that it just ends, like there's no character arc. Paul catches up to most of his dreams and begins embracing his role. He grew up/matured in this film.

I could've done with one or two fewer visions/dreams, especially of Zendaya's character. I had a similar tiff with The Revenant where John Glass kept seeing is wife and son. Kind of interrupted the film for me.

It's bold that the movie begins with the title "Dune: Part One", without full backing for a sequel. There's no way this is M. Night Shyamalan's Avatar The Last Airbender territory of film, where it states it's the first part, but doesn't actually deliver on it.

Lots of stellar actors that brought their A game. I'll watch this again on HBO Max. It didn't feel long to me at all. It actually felt fairly rushed. I'm curious to know what was cut out that would've extended it and allowed for a richer film experience.

I've heard it both ways but it's probably a more accurate pronunciation of that type of name without the long "o."

Long "o" sounds more sci-fi. Otherwise without it, just sounds like a local school bully.

Saw it today, I enjoyed it, and I never saw the other films or read the books.

So..Paul Atreides is T.E. Lawrence.

Watched it, then rewatched the original movie. I like this, but wow, does it follow the original movie perfectly. Though in the original move, at the point where the new ones ends, seems to go downhill pretty fast. Just goes through the movie very quickly to get to the end. I look forward to #2 as I hope it can wrap up the story better.

It was very very good. Just be aware that in some scenes whisper with loud background so you can miss the musings. Nothing really important (I don’t think lol).

To me a lot of the music seemed like a modern interpretation of 80s sci-fi music.

I loved that big alpenhorn thing that Zimmer would bust out for dissonance, adding in flat 6 and 7 to whatever he was building.

Really impressed with this version. I watched at home yesterday and even with some distractions from kids, having to eat dinner 2/3rds through it was still very engrossing.

I thought the aesthetic of it was perfect. Really satisfying. The Baron was so well done! Paul's journey of maturity was shown without being told, Lady Jessica was maybe a bit emotional but remember Paul is her son and her hope of being the Kwisatz Haderarch so her emotional investment can be explained. Momoa was even good as Duncan Idaho which I was skeptical of, he was a bit bro'ish but it worked for that mentor big/brother role (not sure he could do golem Idaho though).

The 'thopters were rad!

My home theater is a 65" screen and 7.1 Dolby Atmos and it was good but yeah seeing at a good theatre would be suitable for this.

The visuals were great. Obviously the CGI has come a long way. It misses the back story and the importance for the Bene Gesserit's role in all of this. And others as well. They were probably trying to avoid all the first person narration that provided that in the '84 version. You miss a bit if you're not already a fan. The sound guy that mixed the final cut should be fired. I had to turn on the CC.

I found that some scenes made less sense w/o the internal narration. For example, the assassin's dart, we know from 1985 internal narration that it is motion based, yet in 2021 it's not clear what he is doing...through a very very long scene.

I also missed the space-manatee (Space Guild navigator) excreting spice to bend space. I don't think it is as clear in 2021 why spice is important and how even though there is an Emperor and great Houses, the Space Guild is actually pulling all of the strings.
