Default Columbus & Cincinnati Official Hocking Hills Planning Thread

Well, the Columbus guys and gals have been talking about this for a while now. So I'll start a thread so that we can plan this thing.

I went down there yesterday in my Trans Am, and my RS. I can honestly say that it was one of the most fun things I've ever down in a car, period.

I was thinking of the second weekend in October would be good date for this.

Priorities we need sorted out.

#1 Hotel

We need a cool hotel that has the capacity to hold all of us for this weekend. The will let us hang out in the parking lot to all hours of the night drinking beer and raising hell. A group discount would also be nice.

#2 Road Routes

We need to know where we are going to be driving. Hopefully this is not too far away from the hotel.

#3 Car Show Local

I'm still up in the air about a car show. It could be a lot of work in a little amount of time. I think we could pull it off if we think small. If we introduce money into this, i.e. trophies, entrance fees, sponsors, ect. , we will never have enough time to plan this. A simple judging and printouts saying who's car finished 1st, 2nd, 3rd in each class. This should be fun and doable, if the interest is high enough for this.

#4 Road Rally

A road rally is like a poker run or a scavenger hunt, but in cars. Clues are given to each two person team (driver, co-driver), and they go look for the answer. For example, "Pins fall here", would mean that you need to go to the local bowling alley. Emphasis is first placed on accuracy over speed (for safety reasons). The team with the highest point total wins. There are multiple routes, so that nobody can just follow someone to the locations. This again should have only printouts for the winners to save on cost.

#5 Sponsors

This is probably not going to happen. If we can get some sponsors, then we could have trophies for each event. So for example it could by the "Byers Mazda Subaru Car Show", with the sponsor's name on the trophy.

#6 Waivers

Perhaps this should have been #1. Nobody wants to get sued if someone gets hurt, me especially. We need someone to find a legally binding waiver so that we can do this thing.

Final Thoughts:

I need one person to head up each of these numbers. I need leaders with the drive to make this happen. If we can't get people to commit to this then it won't happen. So post here if you are one of those people.

Please let me know what you think. Thank You!

Sure, anyone from the Mid-west that wants to make the trip, post here. Cinci and Cbus are the closest major cities. That's why I mentioned them.

I'll be able to help out with something, just not exactly sure yet, once i get that figured out i'll let you know.

I put a post up on the LERSOC (lake erie region) board inviting all of them to come down for it as well. Between them and us if most of the people show up, we'll have quite the turnout let alone everyone else that would come.

I'll take a look at what needs to be planned out and i'll see what i can help out with.

As an OU alum (BSC 92). I think that would be a great place for a meet. Couple of things to think about...

Hotel: Make sure your date is not in conflict with any OU dates or you will be SOL. Especially Haloween!

Routes: Cell Phones are a no go due to hills there a lot of the time (kinda nice) make sure you have radios. Also it is very easy to get very, very lost there. I think doing a rally might get half the people to disappear off the face of the earth. Also people in the rural areas don't take to kindly to unknown cars on their roads. I have been on one rally and one meet where people tried to physically impede our progress.

Thanks for the insight. We will definately have to plan our routes carefully.

We should hand out maps with the main county roads around the area. So that if someone does get lost they can find their way back. The road rally course should be very easy. The idea is to have fun driving around town for a reason, not to be frustrating.

We definately need local knowledge in these areas.

I'm not seeing a lot of interest in general here. I was expecting a flood of interested people. If you guys are planning on hanging back until all the hard work is done, then this thing is not going to get done.

I don't wanna come off like a jerk here, but I'm not going to do all the planning myself. So please, step-up, grab a number, and commit to helping plan this. If we don't get more interest soon, I don't think this is going to happen. Thank You. !soapbox

Nate, I'm really not sure where Hocking Hills is but I'll try to do a little research and see if I can help find info on Hotels too!

Nate- to plan this effectivly, I think we should make a list of things that need to be done/reaserched, and people can sign up to do. I definatly want to help out in any way I can, but I don't want to work on the same thing as someone else. Like I said earlier, I have a house down there, so I know the area fairly well, so I plan on helping with any/every aspect of this event. Let me know how you would possibly like to divide up the list of things.

Thanks Wende! Here is a place to start. They seem to have many hotels available from this site. So you may need to do some searching on Yahoo Travel for a start.

http://www.hockinghills.com

Colin,

Basically I thought my original list would do for starters. We just need leaders on each of the numbers listed above. Once we get some people commited then hopefully they will run with it. So Wende just said that she was going to look into some hotels. That helps a lot because it's one of the things that we can't do without.

I think you could be most helpful with the route planning, road rally planning, and possibly the car show local. I don't want to overload you however. So it would help if you would commit to lead one and then we can get some more people involved with the others.

If you would like to start brainstorming a list of things we need, then here is a great place to do it. I'm all ears.

I appreciate you help, and enthusiasm for this event. Thanks!

Last bump.

I'm not seeing the interest to keep this idea alive.

Okay, I'm officially cancelling this.

We'll have more time to plan for next summer.
