Just move, lol. I don't have to commute in DC traffic and if at some point I do I'll look to move to another job but not everyone has that opportunity. Some also really enjoy what they do and it can only be done in a high density area because that is where the work is.

If I was in gridlock I'd have a nice comfortable vehicle that had a lot of adaptive cruise and other controls (electric or otherwise) or I'd ride a 400cc bike and just go around them.

I don't think that's going to change anything for me. Cars aren't appliances to me. It's up there with sports as a passion for me since I was a kid. Whether it's a 5 minute drive or 5 hour I don't like driving in vehicles that I'm not fond of. The only thing the density of traffic changes for me is willingness to drive a manual transmission. Fortunately I'm one of those people that's as happy with a good automatic as a good manual transmission.

I understand your position. Truly, I do. I'm sure I could go back into my post history and find a nearly identical quote from myself from a few years ago. I'm not suggesting anyone else needs to feel the way I do. Nor should anyone else expect me to feel otherwise.

But I flipped the script during covid, and enjoyed the time and money that was freed up by dropping my sporty car. Made me realize that I was playing a part that I just didn't have time for. I almost bought a fixer-upper S2k, but then talked to a friend about his car project and how much time it takes - I decided I just don't have that free time right now. Having the time freed up for my family and other hobbies mean more to me than spending time on my car. Don't get me wrong, I still feel a small part of me missing, but it's a lot smaller than I would have thought 2 years ago when I was still driving around in my R on the daily.

I am in the same position. I have ALWAYS had a sports car of some type, and many times it was my daily driver. Since then I have kept a cheaper/paid off fun vehicle, and have looked for a reasonable daily to handle the boring work.

When there are days I think I can enjoy the drive I have that option, otherwise I want something that does it job with as little fuss as possible.

I fully acknowledge and imagine most of us realize that there's a steep price to pay for being an auto enthusiast. I don't even want to think about how many thousands of dollars over my lifetime I have wasted on automobiles. It's like a disease but at least it's not one like drug addiction or alcoholism that's adversely affected my health. Just the pocketbook. I have no issues with people that choose to go with their head over their heart. Sometimes I wish I could.

Good points here. May as well chime in with my equally anecdotal story.

I have always had a fun and sporty car as growing up that was my only car. The goal was to own the sportiest car I could live with. Then I became happily married and that moved the needle to what is useful to my small but soon to be growing family. It was still going to be a fun car, but now 4 doors made more sense. However it was becoming apparent to me that I spent an inordinate amount of my time in a car going from one light to the next and never really having it out. Once I stopped autocrossing regularly I realized I owned a vehicle that was ideal, for the type of driving I did 0.1% of the time.

Made no sense. Change was in the air.

Then I bought my classics and the attention and modding/restoring went into those. I kicked it up a notch by adding kids to the mixture and family dynamics changed as did my amount of free time. I stopped buying vehicles for myself and started buying vehicles for my family. More pointedly I started buying cars that made my daily life easier. I had classics to scratch that fun to drive itch so moving on seemed to make sense.

So my daily is now a car that serves my family and its various activities. From hauling bikes to camping to whatever other adventure we decide. Comfort and not corners is the priority. Ground clearance and Cargo, vs G forces and Braking is priority.

If it rains or if traffic is bad, I choose NOT to drive my classics. They are more fun moving and making noises than sitting still.

life happens and I think many of us are at an age were we can have a vehicle for each activity we like.

Nah it's my reality. Ain't over the top, it's what I do. Reading some person on here point the "boring" finger at folks, well , your life sounds awfully boring to me. So that is a moving target for everyone. If I wasn't a motorcyclist, and couldn't ride, I'd probably not want to even live. Life would be awfully boring.

And everyone has pretty thick skin around here nooch, or they'd be long gone by now.

Literally none of that. What's hilarious, is your jump to conclusions mat. If someone is all about suiting up for a hard day of cornering on a motorcycle, to you that is "extreme behavior". Or going to the lake and ripping it on a ski. The jump to conclusions mat comes out and you are being compared to a guy in the wing suit jumping off a mountain. That's what people like you do when people do things differently than you. Either of the above described activities or motorsports passions to you are either a) dangerous or b) extreme, because you don't do them.

My only thing was someone daily driving a hopped up CUV and pointing the finger at people labeling them or telling them they have boring a$$ lives. That's hilarious in itself.

The one thing I learned as a kid, and it was stamped in on rock like the folks who landed on Plymouth rock.... life is short. I knew as a kid it would go by hellafast. I learned what marketing was, the power it has over many people, and to ignore everything and do what makes me happy. Let people finger point, let them whine, piss and moan. Turn off marketing, turn off what everyone else is doing, make your own decisions and go live. Tame, extreme, makes no difference, others opinions, they don't pay my got damn bills. When someone's opinion pays for my mortgage, vehicle payment, mods, whatever, then I will care. Until then f normality, f squares, f all the marketing holidays, f social media apps, f marketing, advertisements, and f what everyone else is doing. I'm living man, L-I-V-I-N. This life is temporary. Nobody makes it out of this alive. It's a wonderful thing, thinking outside of the box, and living outside of it. I cannot count how many times sitting at a light headed out to the twisties, suited up, where some dude rolls down his window and says "Man I'm doing something wrong here". Same thing at the gas station fueling up the ski for a full day at the lake.

Sorry, now I have to get back to my "boring life" of finishing out the work day, lifting, then spending tonight prepping my bikes for a full weekend of corner blasting. Wind is leaving the metro, and temps will be ideal this weekend. Especially tomorrow when the air will be cold, and the bikes make a little more power with the cold air hitting the intake. I could do the "boring life" like Frank the Tank I guess, but I choose not to.

Well, um, actually a pretty nice little Saturday, we're going to go to Home Depot. Yeah, buy some wallpaper, maybe get some flooring, stuff like that. Maybe Bed, Bath, & Beyond, I don't know, I don't know if we'll have enough time.
