Default Motul Sport 5w-40

Decided to give this oil a try as I found a case for a good deal on Amazon. Was using Amsoil signature series 5w-30 before this and Motul X-cess 5w-40 before that. This was my first oil change with the Sport so I haven't an analysis yet. Probably won't get to go that until spring. What I can say is so far this oil does seem better.

I drive cross country (NY to UT and back) each year. Typically I do the drive in 3 days. X-cess had been a decent oil, but by the end of each trip the engine didn't run as smooth and I found myself doing oil changes at 2500 miles in general with that oil. OA had always come back good enough but but it did seem to wear fast. Decided to give Amsoil signature a try after that. Worked great. Engine didn't sound as rough as with the X-cess but still could tell when the oil was nearing the end of its life. Amsoil would start to get that slight rough sound to it around 3500 miles. I was going to push it to 5000 just to see since it's suppose to be a long life oil (still don't trust those claims from any manufacturer honestly). But once it started to get that sound I would change it. I'm pretty religious about the 3000 mile changes, so going longer than that wasn't sitting well with me and I may have been looking for a reason to change it. My biggest gripe was the price and the wasteful packaging. You can get 5w-30 in gallon size, but 5w-40 and 0w-40 are only available by the quart. This makes it much more expensive and more waste. I also use my old containers to put the used oil in for recycling since it's easy to transport this way. Much more difficult with quart bottles. And this is why I went 5w-30 when trying the Amsoil.

So I'm pursuing Amazon like a good brainwashed human, and I come across a case of four 5qt bottles of Motul Sport. Hadn't heard of it so I start searching to see what people have to say. Not much info out there. Motul says it's basically a middle ground between their 300v racing oil and X-cess/X-clean line. It has the same ester base as the 300v with the correct additives to make it good for daily driving. Sounds good, and was $50 cheaper than 4 gallons of Amsoil. Sold.

Well, I just got done with my drive to UT and every time I pulled into a parking lot, came to a stop light, got stuck in traffic, or finished my drive for the day, the engine ran and sounded as smooth as when I first put the oil in. 2300 miles with the RPMs averaging 2800-3100 (70-80mph w/STi trans) for up to 15 hours a day and everything is butter smooth. I did notice a slight decrease in MPG (normally get 25, was getting 22-23 with this trip, except the last tank I got 27), but I'm not sure if it was oil related as MPG was the same between 5w-40 X-cess and 5w-30 Amsoil sig series. Haven't lost enough to register on the dip stick either.

I'll post with updates as I can and will post an OA when I get one done. But so far this seems like a solid choice and will be curious to see how it does during a track day.

And yes Unibomber, Walmart blah blah. But we can agree to disagree about oil.

question: have you done any oil analysis on the various samples/weights listed above?

Do you know what each brand and/or oil weight is actually doing inside the engine and how each affects the various metals that lie within?

Oil is probably one of the most subjective items/topics in the automotive world.

I'm not trying to be difficult, but proof or actual numbers behind your thoughts would help immensely.
