Default Tomioka GTX29 Gen II

The GTX29 Bolt-On turbos are on back-order "DUE TO POPULAR DEMAND". But I cannot find a thread, dyno plot, or even images. Does anyone have any info on these or know someone running it?

I know someone with a gen1 version. No issues so far...

You don't hear much about this turbo because many go with Socal Porting and port their stock turbo or FP blue. Tomioka has been around for a while and makes decent stuff...

Hey I have this turbo. I know you posted this a while ago, did you ever find the info on it?
I just figured out you need a ball bearing restrictor for it and oil have went past my seals. I need to get a restrictor and the correct size. 21 wrx.

No one I talked to installed or tuned the Tomioka. I ended up purchasing the Boostlabs which has been proven.

I had the boostlab 54x and it started spewing oil past the turbo seals into the exhaust, sent it in for a warranty inspection and they said everything was perfect with it like it came from the factory.

When I sent it in I ordered the tomioka gtx29 gen II(it's a dual ball bearing turbo) and the same thing happened so I think it's the high oil pressure going to the turbo.

So I'm looking to getting an oil restrictor and trying to see what all I need to buy.

Or I could get a pressure regulator like this
https://www.rallysportdirect.com/pro...sure-regulator
but I'm not sure all the other stuff I'd need to set it up for a 21 WRX.

Yeah the oil pushing past the turbo seal is an issue on the OEM turbo also. It's because the turbo sits under the FA motor (compared to the EJ turbo is on top of the motor and uses gravity to naturally drain).

I run the Perrin Oil Restrictor... It works OK. That adjustable Turbosmart restrictor is nice, but I would be worried about over adjusting it and the turbo doesn't see enough oil. Let me know how you make out if you end up running the TS Restrictor, I'm curious.

Yeah an since it uses gravity to drain I could give it less oil via an oil restrictor(still having a hard time finding the exact one I need.)
I also have the perrion turbo sump restrictor and it hasn't fixed the issue sadly.

Thanks! The turbosmart inline oil pressure regulator makes it so the oil pressure stays around 40psi. I don't know how to hook it up to the fa20.

I'll message back if I figure anything out.

I ran the 54x but am currently running the GTX29. The ball bearing is nice. Right now I'm putting 470whp and 455wtq @29psi on E60. I like the Tomioka much better than the 54x. The quality seems a lot better, it spools quick. My only wish is to have it be bigger.

Today I ordered a banjo bolt with a 0.035mm restrictor from atpturbo.com
I hope this solves my oil leaking problem

Yesterday my shop said at 90 psi oil pressure I was leaking oil and past 100 it was a lot more.

Since tomioka uses a garret cartridge I think it'll work. Because on garretmotion.com for ball bearing turbos it said

"An oil restrictor is recommended for optimal performance with ball bearing turbochargers. Oil pressure of 40 - 45 psi at maximum engine speed is recommended to prevent damage to the turbocharger's internals. In order to achieve this pressure, a restrictor with a 0.040" orifice will normally suffice, but you should always verify the oil pressure entering the turbo after the restrictor to ensure the components function properly. "

After 5 month my shop figured out it was actually the one way check valve for my aos, something I suggested on the 2nd week of them having the car.

After replacing it my turbo doesent leak oil of smoke.
Then tuned it and it only get 320 with e60.
Next week I get tuned by Mikey Botti. Should have way better results.
