Default Subject: Advice on Selling My Modified 2006 Forester XT in SoCal - VF43, Cobb Downpip

Hey everyone,

I'm in Southern California and getting ready to sell my 2006 Subaru Forester XT. It's got some mods: a VF43 turbo, Cobb downpipe, and a custom tune. I have the stock downpipe, which I swap in to pass smog, and it’s been compliant with no issues at my usual smog station for years. I’m planning to get a fresh smog certificate before the sale to make things smooth for the buyer.

I’m looking for advice on how to sell a modified Forester in SoCal. Have any of you sold a modded Forester (or similar Subie) around here? What platforms worked best—ModifiedCarTrader, Bring a Trailer, NASIOC, Craigslist, or others? How did you handle disclosing the mods and smog process to buyers? I’m including the stock downpipe in the sale and will explain the swap process, but I’m curious if that’s enough to reassure buyers or if there’s anything else I should do.

Also, any tips on pricing a modded 2006 FXT in this market? It’s in good shape, but I know the mods might narrow the buyer pool. Any pitfalls to avoid with California’s strict emissions rules? I’d love to hear your experiences or any mistakes you learned from.

Thanks in advance for the help!

Mark

IMHO your best bet is to sell it with the stock tune/DP installed and just include the other parts. Obviously disclose all mods in the ad. IMHO if it passes emissions it shouldn't be a hard sell. If a potential buyer doesn't get that, just move on to the next guy.

I think the easiest place to list it is Marketplace and see what kind of feedback you get. That's where I found my VA.
