Question "Check Engine" and EGR valve

My '92 SVX is throwing an intermittent "Check Engine" light . . . my mechanic pulled the codes, and the ECU flagged both knock sensors, both O2 sensors, and the EGR valve. My mechanic suggested that the EGR is probably causing the knock and o2 codes (which, given my limited computer-geek's knowledge of what the EGR does, makes sense). There is no noticeable change in performance when the light pops on, and it usually flickers back off within 10 seconds or so.

Does anyone out there have the shop manual? What are the procedures for checking out the EGR? I have my fingers crossed that it will be as simple as pulling the valve and cleaning it up with throttle body cleaner, but fate is rarely that kind to me when it comes to vehicles

Thanks in advance for any help,
Scott

Is your mechanic a Subaru trained tech, or just a generalist?

There is a diagnostic port on the SXX that you can plug a tool into that might giver you more info.
On the 1994+ models it is next to the steering wheel, exactly where the change hold is on the earlier SVX models. (+

EGR is the way that your engine recirculates its own exhaust gas to lower emissions. Its like hooking a tube to your ass and connecting it to your nose and then farting.....keeps from letting the gas out and all it does is harm the engine.
